Pi-Pop - an electric bike without a battery (3 photos)

The French company Pi-Pop developedbattery-free electric bicycle. Instead of a conventional battery, it uses a supercapacitor that charges while driving. According to the manufacturer, the service life of such an element reaches 10 to 15 years, which is much longer than traditional batteries.

There is nothing more toxic in a supercapacitor blockplastic, iron and other common chemical elements. It will also never catch fire like traditional lithium-ion batteries. Charging occurs when moving forward or when descending a hill, as well as during braking. But during the ascent, the supercapacitor begins to help the rider. The power of a full charge is enough to cover 500 meters at an angle of no more than 10°, and the thrust reaches up to 250 W. After this, the user will have to pedal the electric bike, whose weight is 21.7 kg, on their own. Another interesting point: a fully charged supercapacitor discharges to zero after about two months of inactivity.

This suggests that the Pi-Pop is intended for cyclists who encounter modest hills while commuting around the city. The price for the new model starts at $2675.
