Friday of the future: about advertising of the future and about a neural network that won't blurt out Samsung's secrets

Greetings! This is the 42nd edition of Future Friday, so it would probably be necessary to answer the main question in it.

matter of life and the universe and all that, but instead of"Thinker" we have so far only large language models of the fourth generation. Which, for some unknown reason, prefer to fill in the gaps in real knowledge with their own fantasies and not only cannot give an answer to such global and abstract questions, but they cannot be compared in knowledge even with a freshman. So we will discuss some less global phenomena, for example, the entry of more and more players into the race for ChatGPT, the transformation of the advertising market, another approach to the problem of fast charging electric vehicles, Russian import substitution, the failure of OPPO in creating its own chipsets, the return of the Spitzer space telescope from non-existence and the gait of Tesla robots.

Quick battery replacement for electric vehicles

One way to solve the problem of taking too longcharging batteries of modern electric vehicles is a concept in which instead of charging the battery, it is simply replaced with a charged one. Just like in the good old days with phone batteries. Of course, the focus will only work if your electric car was originally designed for such an operation and has a standardized battery. So far, the technology has been poorly developed, but Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO, in cooperation with Shell, has opened Europe's first automatic station for quick replacement of batteries. The battery exchange station located in the Netherlands is capable of handling up to 312 battery changes per day. It is claimed to be faster than the capabilities of traditional charging stations, and allows several times more motorists to be provided with fully charged batteries compared to, for example, the Tesla Super Charger, which serves up to 40 cars a day. However, this is still slower than the operation of a fuel station (a pair of dispensers, on which a motorist spends 8-10 minutes, will provide the same number of serviced cars). As part of the cooperation between Shell and NIO, up to 100 such stations will be deployed in China by 2025, and the companies will also continue to work together in the European market.

YandexGPT to increase the IQ of "Alice"

The Yandex company announced the introduction of a largelanguage model in his virtual assistant "Alice". It is enough to ask "Alice": "Let's think of it," and she will help in writing a business letter, offer a travel plan or wedding gift options. As usual, the company says that the new technology is currently only being tested, which may lead to errors in the presentation of facts. But you can try it immediately in different places: in the Yandex application, in Yandex.Browser, in smart speakers Yandex.Station and smart TVs with the Alice voice assistant. The YandexGPT neural network was trained using the Yandex supercomputer, the training took place in two stages - first, it was shown public materials of books, websites and articles, and then the neural network was further trained using well-written answers as an example. Of course, almost ritual messages have not gone away that the neural network continues to learn and its answers will become more accurate and adequate over time. Well, let's see, but for now, here's a picture for you on the request "Alice has grown wiser thanks to the neural network" from "Masterpiece, which is also a neural network trained by Yandex":

Samsung will create its own ChatGPT, which will not spill secrets

On the other side of the world, Samsungis also joining the race to create AIs with generative capabilities. True, so far we are not talking about a public version, but about a platform for corporate business users. And Samsung will not do this on its own, but together with Naver Corporation, which is the top supplier of search engines and online services in the local market. Actually, Naver will lay the foundation, which will receive Samsung resources, and then it will further train the resulting ChatGPT analogue to fit its requirements and needs. This AI will speak Korean and go to work at Samsung Device Solutions, where it will help improve and accelerate the development of new semiconductors. At the next stage, when the generative model becomes sufficiently dexterous and skillful, it will be attached to Device eXperience, so that after some time Samsung smartphones and home appliances will also be designed by AI. Moreover, the company really hopes that the neural network, unlike human workers who do not keep their mouths shut, will not talk about their developments and the number of leaks of confidential information will decrease. It is not clear when such a future will come, the first sample of artificial intelligence from Naver and Samsung is still planned to be presented in October. According to still existing unofficial sources in the company.

Russian separation for lithium batteries

From Korean news to back to newsRussian. According to the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, scientists from the Cherepovets State University (CSU) managed to develop their own method for predicting the behavior of polymer film separators for lithium batteries in various environments. One of the problems in the development of lithium polymer batteries is the selection of an ideal pair of polymer and solvent, which would provide mechanical reliability and stability of material characteristics throughout the entire life cycle of the battery. Separation in lithium batteries is made from a thin polymeric polypropylene film, which previously required tests on 15 parameters. The use of the physico-mathematical model of ChSU scientists makes it possible to predict the results of most of them and reduce tests to check only two parameters. The researchers developed and tested a universal model for quickly selecting the compatibility of solutions and polymers in just two additional parameters: the film swelling coefficient and the Flory-Huggins interaction index for a specific polymer-solution pair. In the future, the introduction of such a technique into development and production will significantly simplify and reduce the cost of manufacturing lithium batteries at Russian plants.

The future of advertising

And now I propose to discuss, perhaps, the mostsad news. Expansion and implementation of advertising technologies. If you were hoping that the apocalyptic visions of the world of the future drawn by science fiction writers, full of intrusive advertising that follows you literally everywhere, will remain unfulfilled predictions, then no. This week the last bastion fell.

Tesla will start advertising

Tesla, previously fundamentally notused advertising methods to promote itself and its products, will change its attitude to advertising and will soon begin to use advertising tools to convey to a potential audience information about the innovative features of Tesla cars and their characteristics. With Twitter in his hands, Elon Musk wants to use advertising opportunities to advance in a situation where competition in the electric car market is heating up. In an effort to maintain its leading position in the segment of electric cars, the company will no longer be able to completely do without advertising. The company's owner and CEO says Tesla will look to see if the ads are delivering the results the company wants. Musk's announcement was seen by shareholders as a move to bolster investor confidence and strengthen the company's position in the growing electric vehicle market. But it's only a short step from here to the moment when the beautiful big screens of Tesla cars are filled with ads. As Android TVs have already done.

Unstoppable ads on smart TVs

If you have an Android smart TV and do notIf you buy a paid YouTube subscription, you will no longer be able to avoid ads (unless you live in Russia, whose users are subject to YouTube ad exclusion sanctions). Now, before the launch of the video, an advertising recording will be included without fail for 30 seconds, which cannot be turned off or scrolled. This innovation is positioned as taking care of both users and advertisers at once. The first one can be comforted by the fact that one 30-second video will not be in all videos, but only in 5% of the most popular ones. In addition, it will appear instead of two consecutive 15-second ones, so the total ad viewing time will not change. The second will be given a tool that will ensure the viewing of advertising for 70% of cases (this is how many views TVs generate for the most popular materials). Well, for a snack - everyone at the same YouTube Brandcast conference promised that paused videos would also show ads. As in the attached screenshot. At first, they promise that this advertising load can be turned off.

New Netflix Advertising Policy

However, as it turns out, not allusers are upset because of the abundance of advertising. On the contrary, there is a huge layer of advertising lovers. And yes, the word "lovers" is used here in the truest sense. Netflix has been offering subscriptions worldwide since last year that are "subsidized" through ad integrations. If the usual one is sold at a price of $10, then with advertising you can watch everything the same, but for $7. Discount - mind-blowing $3 per month! However, this was enough to attract as many as 5 million users. Not much compared to 232.5 million active Netflix accounts, but not bad considering the fact that such a subscription is only available in 12 languages, in adult-only plans, and only since last November, when the number of subscribers to the service has been steadily declining. . So the company's management came to the conclusion that advertising is a very good idea. Therefore, it should be made more pleasant for the user. For example, if you are just shown some kind of commercial every time before you can use the service, this is annoying. But it's a completely different thing when for several days you are shown a fragment of an evolving story every time for several days, which is a 30-minute promotional video in its entirety. You'll probably want to watch it and won't waste it... Especially for the three bucks a month discount!

OPPO closes chipset development project

In a number of chipset developers, it has again decreased.Chinese company OPPO has confirmed that its Shanghai-based subsidiary Zeku will be closed due to "uncertainties in the global economy and the smartphone industry." The chip design company was responsible for developing the MariSilicon chip series, which included the MariSilicon X ISP and the MariSilicon Y audio chip. OPPO established its chip business back in 2019 and developed its own coprocessors, modems, power management devices, and audio chips. OPPO is rumored to have invested more than $1.4 billion in its chipset development business. The reason for the refusal to further develop the direction is not officially called, but, most likely, this is a consequence of American sanctions. It becomes problematic for Chinese companies to find partners who would agree to do business with them in the production of modern microelectronics. OPPO did not have its own plants for printing microcontrollers, and in the current conditions it has no chance of acquiring modern equipment, so that its own developments cannot be put into mass production.

"Decommissioned" space telescope will be returned to service

Usually, space-launched equipment has twooptions for completing the path: descend into the dense layers of the atmosphere and burn out or stay in orbit while waiting for the times when space debris can be collected. But in the case of the defunct Spitzer space telescope, it seems that resuscitation is possible. The observatory was launched in 2003 and was active in infrared until the coolant ran out in 2009. Then she worked until 2020 with slightly limited opportunities, until she was finally mothballed. It is located in a solar orbit near the Earth, but is gradually moving away. Actually, “preservation” was connected with the orbit and the distance from the Earth - in order to turn the station antenna to our planet, it was necessary to turn its body in such a way that too little light fell on the solar panels. As a result, Spitzer was not only left without refrigerant, but was constantly faced with a choice between communication and energy. Now Rhea Space Activity has proposed a way to "save" the Spitzer telescope. To do this, in 2026 it is proposed to send the Spitzer Resurrector spacecraft to it, which, flying up to the laboratory at 50-100 km, will try to contact it. If communication can be restored, then the "resurrector" will work as a repeater, and Spitzer will return to observing solar flares.

Tesla robots have learned to walk normally

And finally, I suggest watching the video fromTesla to assess the progress of humanoid robots over the year. In April 2022, Elon Musk promised that the Tesla Bot will turn our ideas about robots that will become our faithful assistants. A year ago, the Tesla bots could only turn themselves over, and not at all at the moments when it was supposed to: the robots simply could not even walk properly. In May 2023, you can see that they have much less problems with walking - they can walk in a straight line and even collectively. In addition, it seems that to some extent they were taught to pick up and put back objects. Unfortunately, as is usually the case with new Tesla developments, no comments are provided, so it is not so easy to assess real progress. But let's hope for the best, perhaps in a year we will be shown “tesla-bots” waltzing and doing calligraphy. Well, or something like that.
