Underwater Italian city may be on the surface in a year

12th Century Italian Village Factory diKaregin, submerged for more than 26 years, will soon be able to see sunlight again. Located in Tuscany, the village was flooded in 1946 as a result of the construction of a dam for a hydroelectric power station. The medieval Italian village that went under water has not risen to the surface since 1994 - it was then that the dam was last serviced for the last time. After almost 27 years, according to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, they plan to drain the lake again in order to restore the missing village founded by the blacksmiths, since many structures built during this period of time are still preserved.

This is what the ghost village of Fabbriche di Carreggine looked like in 1994

Flooded Ghost Village

Flooded by 34 million cubic meters of water, allthe untouched structures of the abandoned village - including stone houses, a bridge, a cemetery and the church of San Teodoro - appear above the water only during maintenance work to maintain the dam. Since the medieval ghost village went under water, it has been seen only four times: in 1958, 1974, 1983 and 1994. In the 1940s, residents of the Factory di Caregino were resettled in the coastal city of Valle, and the village was flooded with more than 747 million gallons of water. Currently, an artificial lake hiding the ancient architecture acts as a reservoir in case of fire.

It should be noted that local politicians are alreadyThey have long been trying to drain the lake and return the ruined village. So, in 2015, the former mayor of the neighboring city of Valle, Mario Apulia, called for draining the lake again, citing tourism and employment of the local population. The fact is that during the last drainage of the lake in 1994, more than a million visitors came to see the sunken village in Tuscany. According to CNN, the daughter of the former mayor of the local municipality, Ilio Domenico Georgi, Lorenza Georgi in her Facebook post indicated that the lake could be drained in 2021:

From certain sources, I know that inIn 2021, Wagley Lake will be devastated. The last time this happened in 1994 was when my father was mayor. Then over a million people came to see the sunken village. I hope that next year we will be able to attract no less attention to the Factory di Caregin.

Despite decades under water, medieval architecture has to be restored

Гидроэнергетика является важным компонентом Italy’s energy sector and accounts for 67 percent of all energy produced from renewable sources domestically. By the way, Italy is the 4th largest hydropower producer in Europe. Representatives of Enel, the energy company that manages the artificial lake, said one of the initiatives discussed was the reconstruction of the natural environment, including cleaning the reservoir and possibly emptying the pool. Well, let's hope that the COVID-19 pandemic will soon come to naught, thereby allowing people from all over the world to see the Factory di Karegin with their own eyes.

Where do ghost towns come from in Italy?

You may not have known this, but in Italy, abandoned cities, villages and hamlets - small communities across the country - there are about 6,000. It is noteworthy that each of these citiesemptied for a reason. For example, villages in remote regions were abandoned after the Second World War, as local residents went to large cities in search of a better life. Other cities and villages were abandoned due to epidemics of malaria and the plague, and the rest of the ghost towns became so due to landslides, floods and continuous earthquakes. But there were also settlements in which all the locals died and their houses were empty. The disappearance of some mountain villages contributed to economic reasons - after the cessation of work, some residential regions of Sardinia were abandoned.

Italian authorities suggest new pandemiccoronavirus can serve as an incentive for the re-settlement of 5800 villages of the country with a population of less than 5000 people. Some of the country's most famous architects have suggested that city dwellers can move to these quiet places to help mitigate the effects of future outbreaks of the virus. Indeed, the romance of Italian ghost towns - and the desire to stimulate investment - is fueled by many schemes in which houses are sold to locals and foreigners for only 1 euro.
