Redmi Note 12 Pro 4G review: is it that good?

Frankly, keeping up with Xiaomi is extremely difficult. As soon as we talked about Redmi Note 12, Note 12 came out right away

Pro, and the Note 12 Pro + remained “behind the scenes”.

Moreover, if you look at the specifications"relatives", it turns out that the above devices resemble Redmi Note 10 Pro and Redmi Note 11 Pro. Somewhere they "licked off" the processor, somewhere the appearance, screens, batteries and other parameters.

In general, Redmi Note 12 Pro, which will be discussed today, is woven from pieces of previous devices with the addition of various chips.

Positioning is difficult to determine: if suddenly someone missed Note 10 Pro and Redmi Note 11, now there is almost the same, only slightly better, in the face of Note 12 Pro.

Another of the interesting: on the site mi.com/ru, the page with the 12 Pro model disappeared, but the 12 Pro + remained. I won’t be surprised if in a couple of months the 12 Pro + also disappears somewhere and some 12 Pro Ultra appears. Circulation of smartphones in nature.

With prices, as usual, leapfrog: only the 8/256 GB version is officially sold in Russia from 25,000 rubles, but there are “globals” 6/8 GB of RAM + 128/256 GB of internal memory from 22,000 rubles.

Design

The Redmi Note 12 Pro smartphone is available in fourcolors: "Starry blue", "Graphite gray", "Polar white", "Ice blue". I am not sure that you will find all colors on sale in our country. White and blue for sure.

An important point: the smartphone in the color "Starry Blue" has a back surface interspersed with sparkles, and the rest of the devices with a matte cover.

I had a gadget in the color "Graphite Grey" on the review. I'd say it's black, or a deep dark grey.

The design of the device is flat.That is, the back and front panels are flat, without 3D glass rounding. By the way, in front it is from Corning, Gorilla Glass 5 model. On the back, it is also glass, but without any name. Not plastic - already good.

The glass is frosted, the prints almost do not “sit down”. In the light, a weak volume effect of light reflection is noticeable. Oleophobic coating of the average level: prints are noticeable, erased so-so.

The sides, top and bottom faces are made of polycarbonate. The material is semi-matt.

Perfectionists will be a little upset: there is a “chin” at the bottom, that is, the frames above and below are not symmetrical.

Dimensions - 164 x 76.1 x 8.12 mm. The device is quite large, wide, but not too thick. It is convenient to use. The device weighs about 200 grams - a classic.

Elements

Front side:

  • Front-camera. Very small, but the pixels on the screen matrix around it are slightly shifted to the left. Perfectionists resent again;
  • Light sensor. Works correctly, there are no questions to it;
  • Proximity sensor. He is physical. Works quite correctly;
  • Voice speaker. Loud, midrange.

Bottom:

  • Combined slot for two SIM cards or a memory card;
  • USB Type-C;
  • Microphone. You are heard perfectly;
  • Hands-free speaker.

On right:

  • Power button. Easy to handle because it is neither narrow nor short. Almost sunk into the body. Acts as a fingerprint scanner. The sensor functions without problems, fast;
  • Volume control. Narrow, long. With a clear stroke and a "click" sound.

Above:

  • Connector 3.5 mm. This is a big plus, since modern devices do not have it or it is rarely found;
  • IR transmitter. I think it's set by default. Never used in any device;
  • Additional microphone for noise reduction during a call;
  • Hole for sound output. Used as a speakerphone paired with a speaker on the bottom. The manufacturer does not indicate whether this is another speaker or the same one used for speech.

On the reverse side is the module of the middlesize with lenses. The main module is silver in color, extends 3 mm above the body, and 1 mm above the module. In principle, the manufacturer could remove the macro and depth modules. Currently, depth of field is easily processed using software, and 2 MP macro is completely useless. Nearby is a single-section flash.

Vibration

It uses "hammer" vibration, tactilely pleasant, soft. The power level is adjustable in the settings.

YouTube HDR supported

AOD Mode Stripped down, only works 10 seconds after touching the screen

Excellent screen matrix with a high level of brightnessin all modes. Separately, it is worth emphasizing that, unlike Redmi Note 12 and Redmi Note 10 Pro, the Note 12 Pro gadget has HDR Dolby support. In addition, the device understands the high resolutions of YouTube videos and works with HDR.

With PWM, things are not very good:if the brightness is reduced to 50%, then the ripple factor will “fly away” to 40%, which is quite a lot. As a rule, in home or office conditions, the screen glows at a brightness of 40% -50%.

The refresh rate of 120 Hz works in almost all programs. For example, in vivo V27, although there is 120 Hz, it functions in single applications. Pay attention to this fact.

A plus can be considered support for the DCI-P3 color space. But this is for those who are confused on screen technologies. Most users are unlikely to distinguish between DCI-P3 and sRGB.

The downside is the truncated AOD support. It can't glow all the time. This is strange, because we have a device in the middle price category, especially the Pro version.

Autonomy

Redmi Note 12 Pro has a 5000 mAh non-removable battery inside. It comes with a 67W fast charger that delivers energy to the smartphone for about 45 minutes.

Discharge:

  • Up to 8 hours of screen glow at auto brightness and connecting the device via Wi-Fi;
  • Up to 18 hours of video;
  • Up to 8 hours of play.

Video - 1080p 30 fps

I would not pay attention to 2 MP cameras in the amount of two pieces - they are useless. Macro can be made from 108 MP crop, and bokeh is now obtained using software.

The main module is used in such populardevices like Redmi Note 11 Pro, vivo V23 Pro, Huawei nova 9 SE, Poco X5 Pro and so on. The quality is good, but nothing more. My main complaints are about the “plasticine” nature of the pictures. They look like they have been heavily processed by AI tools.

Photo in 108 MP resolution:

The wide-angle camera is simple, it shoots well only in the daytime. There is little noise, the colors are accurate. The distortion is strong, but it's natural.

The device shoots video in 4K resolution 30 fps on the main camera and 1080p 30 fps on the “wide”. The main module makes videos quite well, but the wide-angle camera does not go very well.

The selfie camera is ordinary, unremarkable. I would like more details. The video is shot in 1080p resolution at 30 fps. Electronic stabilization is turned on, the quality is more or less.

I think you noticed that in the description of the cameras I haveoften there are words of uncertainty: more or less, quite, so-so, etc. It's really hard to unequivocally say that Redmi Note 12 Pro boasts a cool camera. Yes, the main module is 108 MP, but it's not about megapixels. Especially when this sensor is already more than three years old. And the "width" is 5 years old.

The interface is classic for Redmi devices.

MIUI 13 review: major innovations

A new version of the shell began to arrive on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones.

Examples of photos and videos:

  • Original photos (zip, 49 MB)
  • Sample video (MP4, 25 MB)
  • Sample video (MP4, 53 MB)
  • Sample video (MP4, 45 MB)

Memory, processor and performance

In Russia, the PCT device is sold in only one configuration - 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory. At least most stores only offer this option.

If you buy on AliExpress or just "gray" from us, then there are suggestions:

  • 6GB+128GB LPDDR4X+UFS2.2;
  • 8GB +128GB LPDDR4X + UFS2.2;
  • 8GB+256GB LPDDR4X+UFS2.2.

I advise you to look towards 8/256 GB. I had just such a sample in my hands.

The A1 SD Bench gives a RAM speed of 20,000 MB/s,which is true when using LPDDR4X memory. Built-in memory speed - 500/255 MB / s. But this is by no means UFS2.2, rather eMMC 5.1. And how to be here?

SoC installed inside Redmi Note 12 ProQualcomm is the Snapdragon 732G. This chip was introduced in August 2020. That is, you can’t call it fresh. Mid-range processor, successor to the unpopular 730G.

The 732G chip is: 8 nm process technology, 8 cores, two clusters of 2xKryo 470 Gold (Cortex-A76) + 6xKryo 470 Silver (Cortex-A55).

A couple of years ago, Redmi Note 10 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 11 Lite came out on the Snapdragon 732G. A little earlier - Poco X3.

The Redmi Note 12 model has a more modern Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 chipset, which was shown in March 2023. It already has a 6 nm process technology.

However, the Note 12 Pro scores 420,000 points in the Antutu test, while the Note 12 scores 320,000 points. In this case, Adreno 618 proved to be much cooler than Adreno 610 in Redmi Note 12.

The Note 12 Pro almost does not heat up, in a stress test it shows an excellent result without throttling. Frankly, for the first time I see that the test writes "no CPU thermal throttling detected".

The device behaves quite smartly, without lags and visible brakes of the shell. And here is my comment on the Note 12 Pro:

“In real life, the device behaves ambiguously:very often it slows down out of the blue, and if you load it with installing an application or downloading a heavy file, then the system falls into a stupor for a few seconds, as if the phone freezes.

In general, Note 12 Pro is doing well!

Sound

Two speakers are used for hands-free calls (inNote 12 he is alone). The volume is slightly above average, the quality was a pleasant surprise: clear high frequencies, confident and well-developed mids, there are even the beginnings of bass.

The Redmi Note 12 Pro smartphone supports all popular Bluetooth audio codecs: aptX, aptXHD, aptXHD adaptive, aptXHD TWS+, LDAC, LHDC V1/V2/V3/V4, AAC and SBC.

The phone also has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Impression

The first impression of the device was neutral.Judging by the "specs" - the usual Redmi for 25,000 - 30,000 rubles. But after using the device as the main one, I can say that Redmi Note 12 Pro is a great product. And that's why:

  • screen matrix. High brightness, support for HDR of all types and the operation of these modes in YouTube. Support DCI-P3 100%;
  • Runtime and powerful 67W power adapter. A smartphone easily “lives” for a day;
  • Decent processor. Without glitches and lags, without problems it keeps a 120 Hz refresh rate of the screen matrix;
  • Plenty of storage and support for microSD cards up to 1TB;
  • stereo speakers;
  • All possible Bluetooth codecs;
  • Tactile vibration;
  • High speed Wi-Fi;
  • As a bonus - NFC, infrared;
  • 4 color solutions;
  • Flat design!

Minor disadvantages include:

  • Useless 2 MP cameras;
  • Advertising in shell applications;
  • Asymmetrical screen bezels top and bottom.

Let me remind you that 12 Pro can be found from 25,000 rubles for the PCT version.

Answering the question in the title, yes, the Redmi Note 12 Pro is a really cool product.

Competitors:

  • Redmi Note 10 Pro. It costs from about 22,000 rubles (8/256 GB). It has a 33W charger (67W for the 12 Pro), 5 MP macro (2 MP for the 12 Pro). The gadget is made in a different design, and I do not like it.
  • POCO X5 5G. It costs from 24,000 rubles. Processor - Snapdragon 695, 48 + 8 + 2 MP cameras, 33 W power adapter.
  • Infinix NOTE 30 Pro. It costs from 27,000 rubles. There is already MediaTek Helio G99, 108 + 2 + 2 MP cameras, 68 W power adapter.

These are the most current smartphones with a 120 Hz screen, 5000 mAh battery, NFC, 8/256 GB of memory. It is clear that there are even more competitors. There is always the opportunity to look at Avito and AliExpress.
