Swiss robot Ascento - a hybrid of wheeled and walking robots (video)

For modern robots, one of the main tasksis the ability to quickly move and high stability. The technology of fast movement used by wheeled robots and high mobility, combined with the stability of walking robots, was implemented in Ascento devices that received two mechanical legs with wheels.

The development of the Ascento robot is carried out inlaboratories of the ETH Polytechnic Institute in Zurich (Switzerland). When moving on smooth horizontal surfaces, the robot uses wheels, while effectively maintaining balance. However, when vertical obstacles, such as stairs, appear, the robot “jumps” onto it using mechanical legs on the springs. Movement on steps consists of consecutive jumps forward and upward in one period.

Using independent pendants on each legAscento's robot allows it to remain stable on uneven surfaces. In addition, the developers have demonstrated the ability to maintain a stable vertical position with unexpected side impacts in the Ascento body.

Ascento uses Ascentocameras and sensors, which allows the device to work with remote control, or to perform independent tasks offline. The weight of the Ascento robot is 10.4 kg, the maximum speed is 8 km / h, and the height of the vertical obstacle to which it can independently jump is 0.4 meters. Battery life for 90 minutes.
