Skoda Kodiaq 2022 test. Minimum changes.

The restyled crossover Skoda Kodiaq was presented in April 2021, and the updated model has already reached Russia

towards the end of last year.It should be said right away that restyling turned out to be minimal. In addition to a slightly different grille and modified bumpers, the car received only a few previously unavailable options, and, perhaps, that's all. Moreover, only the owners of the pre-styling crossover, who know their car well, can immediately notice the visual differences between the new product and the previous model.

Appearance Skoda Kodiaq with restyling changedas minimal as possible, which, in general, is true, since the crossover still looks relevant and recognizable, despite the fact that it was first introduced back in 2016. The company's designers only slightly tweaked the grille and made a drop of changes in the front and rear bumpers, as well as the hood. If you have not looked closely at the car before or do not own it, then I think you will not even notice changes in the appearance of the crossover. Such a light restyling can only be explained by the fact that back in 2016, Skoda managed to present a modern and relevant for years to come design of a family crossover that was loved by customers around the world, and its first version sold over 600,000 copies. The main changes concern not so much the appearance of the car as its equipment, namely optics. So, already in the base, the car comes with LED headlights, which have become a little narrower, and optionally, very high-quality matrix headlights are also available to it, which perfectly illuminate the road at night, and LED foglights assist them in corners. The changes have also affected the rear lights of the Kodiaq, which are now also LED with a complex and interesting pattern inside.

I don’t know about you, but I like the design of the Skoda Kodiaq, despite the fact that it has already become familiar on the road, it still looks quite interesting even in 2022, and it is recognizable in the stream.

The crossover salon, one might say, is not at allchanged from its predecessor. In the updated model, only a new decorative insert appeared on the front panel, a contrasting line (fake, as on plastic) on its upper part and doors, and atmospheric interior lighting expanded with ten new shades. Here, of course, an amateur, but the design could be refreshed, made, for example, in the manner of the new Octavia. Why not? But the developers decided not to touch anything, added a couple of touches to make it seem like “expensive-rich”, and that’s it.

But they left all the Simple chips in the carClever is a set of smart and practical solutions that make the use of Skoda vehicles more comfortable and enjoyable. There are niches in the front doors that store umbrellas, convenient cup holders with a special bottom, thanks to which a bottle of water can be easily opened with one hand. There is also a trash basket on the door pocket, to which the bag is easily attached, and after that you simply remove it and change it to a new one. For rear passengers, there are holders for smartphones / tablets attached to the front seat headrests, opening tables on the backrests in front and convenient folding headrest latches to make it comfortable to sleep. There are hooks in the trunk, for which it is convenient to cling shopping bags so that nothing rolls around the cabin, and in addition, you can also buy a special Velcro limiter that ideally holds on to the carpeted luggage compartment. Yes, and I almost forgot about the ice scraper, also known as a magnifying glass, which in Skoda is mounted on the gas tank flap. All these options - some of them are included in the car package, some are bought separately - seem to be quite banal, but in everyday life they turn out to be very useful.

According to the materials, there are no changes in the Skoda Kodiaqhappened, in our mind we have high-quality and soft plastic, below there are already elements made of solid, but oak plastic. Armchairs performed as in the test car are sheathed in leather and artificial suede, very pleasant to the touch and quite practical. In the initial configuration, the seats are fabric, and in the highest configuration they are already made entirely of leather.

Since the Skoda Kodiaq is a family crossover, then, of course, it is worth talking about its possibilities for a large family. So, we had a version with a third row of seats, when unfolded, they eat up useful trunk space, but they allow you to put two more people. Armchairs to a greater extent, of course, are suitable for children, adults will be cramped, and those who are a little higher will also rest their heads against the ceiling. Well, at least the floor is low and you don’t have to sit in the back row with your knees above your ears. Yes, Isofix mounts are not provided on the third row, and in general, the child seat will not fit there, so only children who can sit in the car without additional devices (seats / booster) will sit comfortably in the gallery. The second row of seats has separate longitudinal adjustment and adjustable backrests, and open-type Isofix mounts are located along the edges, which greatly facilitates the installation of child seats. Two chairs can be installed quite calmly at the back, but there is no longer enough space for a person between them. But in the Skoda Kodiaq, passengers can be regrouped a little thanks to the Isofix mounts on the front passenger seat, so you can put one child in the front, one in the back, and then two more adults can sit on the rear sofa.

On the second row, when the sofa is moved as far as possibleback, there is a lot of space, with a height of 187 cm I sit comfortably behind myself, and the child in the chair, even with all the desire, does not reach the back of the seat with his feet. In our configuration with an additional package, tablet mounts for rear passengers were available, in which you can safely put a modern smartphone, folding tables, and sun blinds. In addition, passengers have access to a 220-volt outlet, one USB-C connector, and our version also had three-zone climate control with separate air ducts for rear passengers and its own control unit with a monochrome screen. In general, the car has all the conditions for a comfortable trip with the whole family.

Trunk with third row seats folded downlarge, 663 liters, so you can put a stroller there, and there will still be room for suitcases, and a dokatka is stored underground. With the third row engaged, there is only 233 liters of free space, and with the third and second rows folded down to form a flat floor, we get an impressive 1863 liters. Yes, the largest trunk volume is available in a five-seat car with a stowage under the floor, where it reaches 748 liters.

In our configuration, the tailgatewas with an electric drive, with the ability to open it with a wave of the leg under the bumper, but for some reason there is no dedicated button that would allow you to close it and immediately block the car.

I sit comfortably behind the wheel, I like itSkoda and Volkswagen Group cars in general in that tall drivers can easily fit in a small Rapid or a large Kodiaq, and there will still be a margin of adjustment. For some reason, some other automakers put incomprehensible restrictions, so that either there is not enough longitudinal adjustment of the seat, or a steering wheel for reach, and the most fun is when both of these are not enough and you go hunched over in three deaths. There is also space here, the seats are easy to adjust to the desired position, besides, they are also electrically adjustable and have memory for both the driver and the front passenger, and steering wheel adjustments in two planes are also enough. The chairs themselves are comfortable, moderately hard, with a good profile and developed lateral support, so that even on a long trip you don’t get tired in them. It’s a little disappointing that the engineers placed the front cup holders in a very strange way, so if you move the center armrest forward, access to them is blocked, and in general, put tall water bottles there and it immediately becomes uncomfortable. Plus, not everyone will like the high vertical landing in the crossover, someone will probably want to go lower, but this will not work.

Virtual dashboard 10.25” is already included in the standard equipment of the Style package, it is recessed into the console and covered with a visor, so that the information on it is read well both day and night. There are several themes for the dashboard, from heavily overloaded solutions with a lot of information to minimalistic ones, when only the speedometer and range are displayed on the screen. All themes can be quickly changed on the go. On the panel, you can combine the data you need, as well as change its color scheme, and here it is linked to the interior contour lighting. Along the edges of the screen are large indicators of temperature and fuel level, which turn on / off depending on the selected topic.

The digital instrument panel in the Kodiaq is completelyfunctional, you can work on it using convenient rollers and buttons on the steering wheel, with call lists, playlists and lists of radio stations. Data on an incoming call with the possibility of answering or rejecting a call is also displayed on the dashboard. If your car is equipped with built-in navigation, then you can pull out the map on the virtual dashboard and open it for a detailed acquaintance, but while guiding along the route, tips will be displayed on it in a convenient format.

The main screen of the media system touch 10 "(in the base6.5”, average 8”) with HD resolution. The display is not bad in terms of brightness and contrast, is quite responsive, and the oleophobic coating is almost perfect. The design of the menu, in my opinion, is a bit specific, but you can get used to it, since it is quite logical. You can display the most frequently used device functions on the home screen for quick access. There is its own navigation system with up-to-date maps and integration with a digital dashboard, but a weak drawing. And there is also support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the latter can work wirelessly. To connect smartphones, you can use either of the two USB-C connectors located in the front of the cabin.

Speakerphone in the car works withoutcomplaints, and the connection of phones via Bluetooth is always stable. To charge gadgets, three modern USB-C connectors are used, two in the front and one in the back, modern devices are recharged from the car's on-board network quite cheerfully. There is also Qi wireless charging in a niche on the front console, but access to it is not the most convenient and is blocked by the gear lever. Plus, charging does not work well with devices in cases, so in this case it becomes practically useless.

Top-of-the-line driver assistantsKodiaq complete set. There is an adaptive cruise control with the ability to work in traffic jams and the Stop & Go function, which allows the system to automatically stop and also continue to move independently if the stop time does not exceed 3 seconds. On the highway, the cruise works almost perfectly, only there are comments about the slightly harsh braking that is felt in the cabin. I would like the car to slow down in advance. Well, plus a deceleration chip if the system sees vehicles in the left lane that are moving at a lower speed, when you have to give gas yourself to make the Kodiaq accelerate. But in traffic jams, the car behaves twitchy, it starts moving late and does not see the transport wedged in at the last moment very well. There is a tracking and lane keeping system that works correctly, sees even not the best markings and gently returns the car to the lane if you start to leave it. All this is complemented by a blind spot monitoring system with a convenient and clear indication on the mirror housing.

In the parking lot, parking sensors help you in a circle andall-round view system even with the ability to turn a virtual car. A pleasant moment is that the data from the parking sensors in a visual format is superimposed on the picture from the camera. But the image quality from the camera is not the best, even the same Chinese have long been offering cameras with high resolution and high-quality pictures in their cars. There is also an automatic parking system, but already outdated, forcing you to turn on the turn signal if you need to find a place on the left side, with the need to stop at the right point to start the system and constant manipulation of the automatic transmission lever and work with the brake pedal. No, even in your pocket, even in parallel, the car can park, but the system requires too much attention to itself, which is no longer the case in more advanced parking attendants.

Climate control in our case was three-zone, witha convenient control unit, however, for some reason made of glossy plastic. The temperature control knobs, although large and easy to use, are somehow fuzzy, plus they seem to dangle a little, and their own temperature data screens are small. But it is worth noting that the main climate settings can be pulled out on the screen of the media system, where you can configure it, as well as adjust the temperature in the back, which is important if you have a child sitting there. The climate control works very gently and delicately, without requiring adjustments in the process. Also in the car there is a three-level heating of the front and rear seats, and in addition, a heated steering wheel with a convenient activation button on the steering wheel itself. Heated windshield is optionally available.

For comfort, I liked the car, in itquiet, even on the highway, a minimum of noise breaks into the cabin, so you can talk to passengers without raising your voice. The suspension handles most bumps well, especially in Comfort mode, which is available if you have DCC adaptive suspension installed, which controls each of the four shock absorbers individually, continuously adjusting their work taking into account the turns, accelerations and braking of the car. In this mode, the control becomes a little cottony, but the suspension simply swallows all the bumps, gently broadcasting into the cabin only a collision with the largest of them.

Today, the Skoda Kodiaq crossover is available onour market with two petrol turbocharged engines 1.4 liters 150 hp. and 2.0 liters with 180 hp. The first goes in conjunction with a six-speed robot, front or all-wheel drive. The second is already with a seven-speed DSG robot and only all-wheel drive. We had the most powerful version with all-wheel drive on the test. Such a car drives well, the engine-box combination works flawlessly. The power of the motor is enough for a quiet overtaking on the track, and the box, for the most part, works quickly and correctly, whether it is overtaking at speed or sharp acceleration in city traffic. Moreover, the box adjusts to different modes quickly, and you will not notice any thoughtfulness or twitches when you drive off the highway and get into a traffic jam or, conversely, get out of a dense traffic jam onto a free road. There are also no special questions regarding the management of the Kodiaq, it is slightly blurred in the “Comfort” mode, making the car wadded, but really comfortable. But in the standard and sport mode, the crossover is already more fun to steer.

Despite the fact that the Skoda Kodiaq is stilllarger than an urban crossover with a ground clearance of 190 mm, it is quite possible to move off-road on it, especially on the all-wheel drive version, which has a separate “Off Road” mode. On a test car, I didn’t go further than the primer, but I rode a Kodiaq a couple of times at a special training ground, where the car showed itself very worthy in difficult conditions.

In terms of fuel consumption, the car is quite good, inthe city takes about 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers, and on the highway the average consumption does not exceed 7 liters per 100 kilometers. It is recommended to fill in the 100th gasoline, but the use of the 95th is allowed.

Today the price of the updated crossover SkodaKodiaq on the official website of the manufacturer starts at 3,364,000 rubles. At dealers, the cost of the car is likely to be higher, plus you will have to choose from the balances available in warehouses.
