Monkeys can communicate with "words". What does it look like?

It is believed that the ability to communicate with words is oneone of the main differences between humans and animals. But scientists are increasingly convinced that many species of animals also have their own language, it’s just that for people the words they utter sound like just strange sounds. Scientists recently listened to about 5,000 recordings of the calls of chimpanzee monkeys from the Tai National Park in African Côte d'Ivoire. They noticed that among all the grunts, chuffs, whimpers and other sounds they heard, there were certain sequences. They came to the conclusion that all these sounds are words of a monkey language inaccessible to humans. Moreover, as in human languages, it has various intonations that can put a different semantic load into words. There seems to be more in common between humans and apes than previously thought!

Chimpanzee monkeys can talk, we just don't understand them

Scientists have discovered the language of monkeys

The results of a new scientific work have been publishedin the journal Communications Biology. As part of the study, the scientists listened to thousands of audio recordings, which were about 900 hours long. The recordings contained the calls of West African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus), which are critically endangered and protected in the national park. To understand what sounds scientists had to deal with, watch the video below. You can go crazy!

I wonder what these two are talking about?

In recordings lasting 900 hours, scientistscounted 390 sequences of sounds. Of course, compared with the possibilities of human communication, such a vocabulary seems negligible. But scientists stressed that at the moment they have not fully studied the communication of monkeys. In the future, they want to record even more sounds in order to find additional sequences. But they are already almost completely sure that the sounds made by chimpanzee monkeys definitely have a structure and can be deciphered.

NOT ONLY MONKEYS, BUT FISH AND EVEN MUSHROOMS CAN TALK:

Mushrooms know at least 50 words of their own

Pisces communicate about food and sex

How did people learn to speak?

Researchers believe that the study of monkeylanguage can shed light on how people learned to speak in their time. At the moment, it is believed that people acquired the skill of communication about 20 million years ago. At first they communicated with gestures, and then they began to imitate the sounds from the outside world. After that, most likely, they developed certain sequences of sounds, like those found in chimpanzees. If common features are found between the development of communication in humans and monkeys, the discovery is unlikely to surprise anyone much - chimpanzees and humans have 98.8% identical DNA. That is, we have 10 times more in common than between mice and rats!

Humans and chimpanzees have a lot in common

It is noteworthy that gestures play an important role inmonkey life. In 2014, scientists noticed that chimpanzees know at least 66 movements with which they ask their relatives for help, attract attention, and so on. And a few years later, researchers found that for some reason, chimpanzees often throw a stone against a tree and cause noise. This was also counted as a way of communication, albeit an extremely unusual one. What exactly the monkeys tell their relatives by throwing stones against a tree, scientists do not know for sure. Perhaps they want to draw attention to the location of food and water. It may also be that they demonstrate their strength. Read more about this observation in this article, there is a video.

Chimpanzees also have sign language

Personally, I have no doubt that animalshave their own languages - people just don't understand them. I would like to wait for the moment when scientists finally find out the meanings of the sounds they make and create a full-fledged translator. Agree, it would be nice to have an application with you that can erase the language barrier between us and the animals. Maybe we will finally find out what cats want from us, screaming at the closed door and entering inside after it is opened ...
