Drones as a source of trouble. Flying ban for amateurs

Hello.

Every month the use of quadcopters or any flying drones becomes more and more difficult,

bans on their flights begin to spread duringall corners of the world. There are many reasons for this, as a rule, they directly follow from what their owners do and how they annoy others. The level of annoyance at the arrogance of drone owners has become prohibitively high. As an illustration of this statement, I will cite a message from the chat of one of the cottage settlements: “Who launches a quadrocopter! Now I’ll follow and prick my ears!!!” A cry from the heart, but such everyday dramas are played out almost everywhere, sometimes it comes to air battles in the truest sense of the word. In the spring, I watched a quadrocopter circling over the houses in the Novaya Riga area, someone raised a similar machine to intercept, hovered from above and hit the propellers until it fell to the ground. Whether the person was concerned about his privacy, or whether he had unpleasant stories related to drones, I don’t know.

Even in a short decade of drone sales, wefaced with a lot of big and small problems. First of all, such “toys” are used not only for capturing the beauties of the surrounding world, but also for peeping through windows, reconnaissance of the area and searching for someone’s houses. For example, in a Moscow apartment I heard how a drone flies along the windows and “looks” into them, of course, such use of it is absolutely illegal and annoying to the point of madness.

There are dozens of such examples for eachcountries, but sometimes drones pose an immediate danger, for example, DJI programs restricted areas where drones cannot fly. Usually these are government agencies or airports. Gradually, the number of such zones increases, and the craftsmen have learned how to remove these restrictions in order to return the ability to fly anywhere. Other drone manufacturers do not bother with such “little things”, their cars fly anywhere.

In 2018 at the runway in Gatwick(London) a drone began to appear, the intentions of its operator were not clear. For 36 hours, the airport was paralyzed, planes landed at other airports, flights were canceled - a total of 757 flights were affected, 125,000 passengers suffered from delays. The airport's losses resulted in a round sum, the investigation lasted 18 months, costing 800 thousand pounds, but did not lead to a result.

In December 2018, in hot pursuit of the policedetained two residents who were fond of drones. It was a random shot, they were released after 36 hours, no charges were filed. The police argued that the arrest in that situation was justified.

All in all, the situation looks fantastic, sohow there is an opinion that the drone operator knew the work of the airport well and had the opportunity to monitor the actions of the operators, what was happening on the runway. It was not possible to reveal the mystery of Gatwick Airport, such incidents can pose a direct threat to passenger transport.

Most countries require drone registration, obtaining a flight permit. Somewhere there is a restriction on the size of the drone, somewhere on the size and range of flight, its height. In cities, flights are not allowed almost anywhere, fines are issued for this. A few years ago in Moscow, you could often see teenagers launching drones in the center, today this is no longer the case. As well as drones are much less common, as a rule, they are launched outside the city, away from prying eyes.

Watched in New York's Central Park like twoa teenager was launched by a drone, people around immediately began to dial 911, the boys were black and aroused everyone's suspicion. On the other hand, in this park, as in most of the city, nothing can be launched, a couple of places have been allocated for this, and that’s it.

Another recent story.A Russian tourist was detained at the Norwegian border with a folded drone in his luggage. He did not have time to launch it or somehow use it, he was placed in jail for violating local law. The reason is that the drone, even in such a state when you brought it into the country, is considered to have landed, such a legal trick. Then the Norwegian police found another Russian tourist with a drone, no one saw him during the flight, but the video and photos from the drone proved that the flight was, the person was detained for two weeks, now they are asking to extend the arrest to four weeks. Here it is obvious that the drones were not the best solution for a vacation, they brought trouble to their owners, especially given the general political situation and the search for enemies in Norway. I think that the enemies here are imaginary, and Norwegian hospitality will become legendary for Russian tourists who wanted to get to the Arctic through this country. Usually these are people with money who do not deny themselves toys, including drones. I am sure that the organizers of VIP tours will now have to warn about the need to leave the drones at home.

In addition to peeking through windows, drones canbe used for other cases that violate privacy, for example, with their help they attack corporate networks of companies. Usually in the offices of large companies, the protection of all communications provides for the lack of access from the outside, you need to be physically in the building to connect to the corporate network. Noteworthy is the story shared by Greg Linares, an expert in IT security. A certain financial organization was faced with the fact that two drones were found on the roof of their building - DJI Matrice 600 and DJI Phantom. In addition to the standard equipment, they also had Pineapple WiFi (Phantom), a number of other network hacking tools (Matrice).

With the help of such a piece of iron, you can look for vulnerabilities inWi-Fi networks, emulate the operation of different devices, in this case, the attackers tried to enter the network using the MAC address of one of the employees. In the past decade, such an attack would have required physically being in a building, now drones have done it, they flew to the area where the Wi-Fi network is located.

Lack of a security perimeter to protect againstpenetration of drones is a topical issue, but it is more or less easily solved. Cameras can detect such a threat, the main thing is that now they need to be installed to track the air, since such a path has become real. And here we will begin to encounter a very curious phenomenon - the use of drones will become stigmatized, that is, an ordinary person will argue that only people with bad intentions need drones. Which, of course, is not at all true. But, alas, this point of view may soon become prevailing. We already have very few places where you can fly without fear that you will be stopped, and the drone will be confiscated until the circumstances are clarified. If we talk about other countries, the situation is similar, and every day it gets worse.

The paradox is that civilian drones are soldeverywhere, there are no restrictions on their sale. But the very presence of a drone raises questions, and sometimes imprisonment, regardless of what you did or did not do with it. For me, the fascination with drones ended quickly as soon as it became impossible to officially transport them on planes (due to batteries). Yes, and local restrictions play a role. So in recent years I have been living without a drone and I don’t see anything wrong with it, and most importantly, I don’t cause looks from the outside, as if I’m some kind of attacker doing something obscene. Dronophobia will soon take on a huge scale, here the story will be cleaner than radiophobia.
