15 years of iPhone

Based on materials The verge

Fifteen years ago, Steve Jobs introduced the very first iPhone. He described it as three

devices in one: “a large-screen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a disruptive device for Internet communications.”

But in the time that has passed since its appearance,The iPhone was destined to be something big. It is a symbol of the technology industry, of the current era in general, which has made Apple the largest company in the world in terms of market capitalization. In 2015, there was speculation that it would be the most profitable product ever, and it helped boost Apple's market capitalization to as much as $3 trillion.

One reason is the steady pacedevelopment that Apple has achieved to ensure that its iPhone remains the market leader. It all started with a compact device that focused on the user interface and software, then grew in speed and processor performance. Over the years, the company has added better and better cameras, used larger and larger screens as the market demanded, and continued to introduce new software and security features.

A decade and a half later, the iPhone is still in the spotlight. Let's take a look at how the iconic smartphone has changed over the years.

iPhone (2007)

This is the iPhone as it first appeared beforeusers in 2007, laying the foundation for the modern smartphone. It showed off the classic grid of icons, the single home button, and the ditching of the physical keyboard—the standard for smartphones of the time—in favor of a multi-touch screen. He was able to connect to the Internet and work with multimedia content, but he still lacked a number of key features, such as 3G and the App Store.

iPhone 3G (2008)

The next iPhone was released in 2008, andthe previously missing piece of the puzzle fell into place: the App Store. This gave developers the ability to create their own apps and boosted the appeal of the iPhone as useful apps and games filled its digital storefront. The iPhone 3G also had 3G connectivity, as well as features such as email push notifications and GPS navigation.

iPhone 3GS (2009)

The first iPhone with the S index was an iterationpredecessor with some improvements rather than radical new features. Apple claims it's twice as fast, and the S stands for speed. In general, it looked the same as earlier models, including a 3.5-inch display with a resolution of 480x320. Yes, and users are finally able to copy and paste text.

iPhone 4 (2010)

The first major redesign of the iPhone brought with itstainless steel and glass, as well as a new, squarer design with rounded corners. The novelty was presented as the thinnest smartphone in the world and became the first Apple device with a Retina display. It was also the first iPhone with a front-facing camera for FaceTime video calls, and it also came with iOS 4 to support multitasking.

iPhone 4S (2011)

The fifth generation iPhone looked identical to its ownpredecessor, but it introduced Siri, Apple's voice assistant, which was ahead of its time, but was too raw. The phone also featured a new 8-megapixel camera and a redesigned antenna to address the connectivity issues that plagued the iPhone 4. It was unveiled on October 4th. Apple founder Steve Jobs died the next day.

iPhone 5 (2012)

The second major redesign of the iPhone increased itscreen up to four inches in pursuit of the trend towards larger devices in the smartphone market. It was still compact and comfortable to use with one hand, and its aluminum chassis made it lighter, yet still strong enough. The iPhone 5 also introduced a reversible Lightning connector, replacing the old 30-pin port.

iPhone 5S (2013)

The iPhone 5S retained the design of the iPhone 5 but replacedthe Touch ID home button, a sensor from Apple that had a major impact on the market by making fingerprint scanners a standard feature in smartphones. The device was equipped with the first 64-bit processor in the A7 chipset. It also came out with iOS 7, a major overhaul of Apple's mobile OS. For example, various features of the skeuomorphic design (for example, imitation of textures in applications) were removed in it to create a cleaner and more concise look.

iPhone 5C (2013)

Apple first announced two iPhones in 2013one day. The more affordable of these was the multi-colored iPhone 5C, which had similar specs to last year's iPhone 5 but had a polycarbonate body that designer Jony Ive called "shamelessly plastic." The $549 price tag worried investors that it wasn't cheap enough to compete with more affordable Android devices, and the model was considered a relative failure compared to the iPhone 5S.

IPHONE 6 AND 6 PLUS (2014)

In 2014, Apple finally released bigiPhone, introducing the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. Both phones featured a new curved-edge design, NFC support for mobile payments, and improved cameras that are iPhone features that set them apart from other smartphones. However, larger and lighter devices were not as strong as previous models, and Bendgate erupted - a scandal about the fact that the iPhone is too easy to bend.

IPHONE 6S AND 6S PLUS (2015)

The next "S-year" meant the release of the nextsimilar iPhone. The glass on the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus is stronger and the aluminum body is more resistant to bending, but otherwise little has changed. The 6S added a pressure-sensing display called 3D Touch, which gave quick access to menus and previews when the screen was pressed hard. It was a smart feature, but it wasn't easy to master, and four years later Apple removed the feature from the new iPhones.

iPhone SE (2016)

The beginning of 2016 brought a surprise - an interimiPhone SE. The $399 device looked exactly like the two-and-a-half-year-old iPhone 5S, but came with fast new hardware inside. It was the company's first attempt at adding an affordable entry-level iPhone variant since the release of the not-so-budget iPhone 5C. The four-inch screen was perfect for people not ready to upgrade to larger devices. However, it was clear: Apple believes that the future belongs to the big iPhone.

IPHONE 7 AND 7 PLUS (2016)

With the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, Apple has improvedwhat was in the iPhone 6S, adding better cameras and water resistance, but did not seriously redesign the design. The Plus model featured a new dual camera system, 2x zoom, and a portrait mode that simulated bokeh. Both models ditched the mechanical home button in favor of a touch-sensitive one, and yes, they removed the headphone jack. Apple called it "daring" and critics called it arrogance. Either way, there was no going back.

IPHONE 8 AND 8 PLUS (2017)

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus weren't enoughrevolutionary for Apple to announce the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. They were just updates to the company's wildly successful 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch form factors that started with the iPhone 6. Both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus could easily have been the S versions of the iPhone 7 models—only with improved cameras and processors, as well as an all-glass back panel used to accommodate wireless charging coils.

iPhone X (2017)

IPhone X (ten, not X, who forgot) brokea visual stereotype of the iPhone by getting rid of the physical home button and pairing an "infinite" OLED display with an all-new stainless steel body. It was the first phone to replace the fingerprint scanner with a Face ID biometric sensor, and there were also silly "animoji" for iMessage that could capture your facial expressions. It wasn't cheap: iPhone X prices started at $999 - unfortunately, the market test was successful, raising the prices of premium smartphones forever.

IPHONE XS AND XS MAX (2018)

iPhone XS was similar to last year's iPhone X withsmall improvements, but this time Apple released a larger version of the Max with a huge 6.5-inch display. Apple used to take a long time to build large iPhones, but with the release of the iPhone XS Max, it became clear that the company has embraced this trend. An era has begun where Apple has come to associate big screens with top-notch features. The only thing missing was the Pro console.

iPhone XR (2018)

While the iPhone X was released along withThe "classic" iPhone 8, the XS model did not get a partner in the face of the iPhone 9. Instead, Apple introduced the iPhone XR. In this entry-level model, the premium XS stainless steel chassis has been replaced with painted aluminum, the telephoto lens and 3D Touch have been ditched, and the display has been replaced by LCD instead of OLED. But the iPhone XR still offered users a big screen, Face ID, the latest processor, and great battery life. With a reasonable starting price of $749, the iPhone XR was extremely good value for money.

iPhone 11 (2019)

The iPhone 11 borrowed the iPhone XR form factor, butthis time, Apple made it the main device of the year. The company added a new ultra-wide-angle camera to capture more in the frame, and offered multiple colors, just like the XR. The cost dropped to $699, although the model came with a small amount of memory - 64 GB.

IPHONE 11 PRO AND 11 PRO MAX (2019)

And now the iPhone for the first time received the prefix Pro - thishappened with the release of the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max in 2019. These iPhones were successors to the iPhone XS and XS Max, but in addition to two cameras, they got a third for ultra-wide angle shots. The 11 Pro included an 18W fast charger and a USB-C to Lightning cable. The back of the iPhone 11 Pro model was glass, but not glossy, but matte, and had a bright dark green color.

iPhone SE (2020)

It's no surprise if you mix up the iPhoneThe second generation SE with the iPhone 8. They are essentially the same size and shape, but the updated iPhone SE has better performance and a slightly better camera with portrait mode. The first iPhone SE in 2016 was iconic for its small size, but the second generation SE, with its 4.7-inch screen, is closer in size to later iPhones. What the new SE has in common with its predecessor is up-to-date specs at a low price of $399.

IPHONE 12 AND 12 MINI (2020)

With iPhone 12, Apple returned toglass layered flat design, first used on the iPhone 4 in 2010. The model had a wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle cameras, like the iPhone 11, but the LCD screen was replaced with OLED. Fans of small phones were delighted when Apple introduced a smaller version - the iPhone 12 mini. iPhone 12 introduces 5G support and Apple's MagSafe charging, which allows you to charge it wirelessly at potentially faster speeds than standard wireless chargers.

IPHONE 12 PRO AND 12 PRO MAX (2020)

iPhone 12 Pro got some extrasfeatures and a bolder look than the similarly designed iPhone 12. Users should have been attracted to the stainless steel bezel, frosted glass back and telephoto lens in addition to 5G support. And for the true pros, the iPhone 12 Pro was equipped with lidar for 3D mapping and shooting in portrait mode. The phone could also take photos in Apple ProRAW format. And the biggest-screen “iPhone” Apple has ever made is the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with its huge 6.7-inch display.

IPHONE 13 AND 13 MINI (2021)

iPhone 13 could very well be the S versionbecause in many ways it resembled the 12th model. Cameras have been upgraded with sensors similar to last year's iPhone 12 Pro (but still only two cameras), and lenses lined up diagonally instead of vertically. Apple gave both 13 models a noticeable boost in battery life compared to the 12 and finally stopped equipping its flagships with 64 GB of memory, making 128 GB the starting size.

IPHONE 13 PRO AND 13 PRO MAX (2021)

At first glance, the iPhone 13 Pro looks exactly like thissame as the 12 Pro, but if you put them side by side, you can see that the camera lenses have grown, which hints at a lot of changes in the photo part of these models. The 13 Pro features 3x optical zoom, macro support, and improved low-light shooting on the wide and ultra wide cameras. Video is better than ever with the ability to shoot in ProRes, and a new cinematic mode gives the impression of depth of field between subjects as you shoot. With the iPhone 13 Pro series, Apple has finally adopted the ProMotion high refresh rate screens that have become the standard on most flagship Android devices.

iPhone SE (2022)

iPhone SE third generation - almost an exact copy2020 models, but it received the latest processor and a new 5G module. However, these upgrades failed to maintain the original price, with the starting price rising to $429 - and that's still just 64GB of storage.

What's next?

Apple has announced the Far Out event, whichwill take place on September 7th, where the new iPhone 14 lineup is expected to be unveiled. Rumor has it that the company will introduce the iPhone 14 Max size, and the proposed lineup will look like this: iPhone 14, 14 Max, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

This time, models without the Pro prefix cankeep last year's A15 Bionic chipset, while the Pro's difference will be the new A16 chipset. Perhaps the notch will give way to smaller cutouts for the camera and Face ID. And, unfortunately for some, the iPhone mini may never return. We'll all know soon. And which of the “iPhones” of the past did you remember and become your favorite?
