What is sucralose (E955)

Sucralose is an artificial sweetenerwhich was developed by Tate & Lyle in 1976. It was discovered by accident, while studying chlorinated sugar compounds - one of the researchers tasted them and found that they were 600 times sweeter than sucrose.

Sucralose first appeared in Canadian food products in 1991. After that, it began to spread more and more around the world, and by 2008 it was approved in more than 80 countries.

Like many other sweeteners, sucralose is a white powder.

She was loved for her pleasant sweetness, fastsolubility in water, as well as for low cost. It retains its taste properties even after heat treatment, so it can be used in the manufacture of yoghurts, purees and other products that undergo pasteurization. It also does not cause cavities, so it can be used in chewing gums.

The dangers of sucralose for health

The fact that sucralose can be dangerous forhuman health, scientists have guessed for a long time. So, during experiments on rats, it was found that it can worsen the fecal microflora of rodents, greatly increase the level of acidity in the intestines and increase body weight. However, this effect has not been seen in humans, so it is considered safe. Moreover, initially scientists believed that sucralose is a non-metabolizable compound, that is, it does not break down into other substances inside the human body.

But then it turned out that once in the body,a popular sweetener becomes sucralose-6-acetate. In the course of laboratory experiments, scientists tracked how human blood cells and intestinal walls react to this compound. The results of the study of scientists are very alarming: it turned out that it increases the expression of genes associated with inflammation, oxidative stress and cancer. What's more, sucralose-6-acetam causes leaky gut syndrome, in which the intestinal walls become so thin that undigested food and toxins can enter the bloodstream. This can lead to very serious health problems.

According to the authors of scientific work, sucraloseis a genotoxic compound, that is, a substance that destroys human DNA. According to the decision of experts from the European Food Safety Authority, a maximum of 0.15 micrograms of genotoxic substances can enter the human body daily - if there are more, problems cannot be avoided. If a person consumes carbonated drinks and other products with sucralose, he clearly receives more harm. So scientists are urging manufacturers to stop using this sweetener, and ordinary people not to consume products containing it.
