Spillikins No. 741. Top manager of "Yandex" and "traitor of the Motherland" - another scandal in "Yandex"

Hello.

There are topics that cause irritation, and you don’t want to waste time on them. Temptation

to remain silent and pass by is always great, sincenothing but negative emotions, they do not cause. And every time I ask myself the question: do I need more than others? Each time I answer it simply: if I keep silent, then everyone else will remain silent, there is no need to be afraid to talk about problems. Sometimes it seems to me that I, like a broken record player in which the record is jammed, repeat the same thing, multiply examples, because nothing changes. And, it would seem, you need to calm down, to clear your conscience, he outlined his attitude to the problem, and that's enough. But it doesn’t work, because I’m touched by things that don’t fit in my head, and in this issue of Spillikins they involuntarily resurface. The flight of the top manager of Yandex from the interview well characterizes the inability of the company's management team to face the truth, they all prefer to remain silent and at the same time do what they see fit. Unfortunately, what Yandex does sometimes violates Russian law, and we will also talk about this today. These topics do not bring me pleasure, just believe me. I would like to discuss other problems with you, to talk about creation, not destruction. But even without it, in any way, it is also a part of life. Therefore, forgive me for talking about familiar topics again, giving new examples about Yandex and thereby taking away part of the issue from other topics. Good thing this doesn't happen every week. However, let's start our release with something else. Go!

"Kandinsky" against "Masterpiece" - a beta version of the neural network against an early beta

"Sberbank" is a huge and clumsy colossus, often very inefficient. I see it both from the outside and from the inside in those moments when I encounter something in the company. But for several years, he has not changed his opinion that Sber will gradually build a very strong ecosystem, the company's size and focus on key areas of development speak in favor of this. There are resources, there are people and the desire to change, even if it happens slowly.

Against the background of Sberbank, the same Yandex looks bigwell done, the development speed is higher, strategic directions have been mastered, plus the company has learned to use the administrative resource, receive preferences from the state and become a monopolist in certain niches - at first it was a taxi, soon it will be a delivery of ready-made food. Sberbank and Yandex see the future more or less the same, as do many other companies, but they all entered this future from different starting points. Sber is a heavyweight, clumsy and slow. Yandex is a smaller company, but able to build new products faster, primarily to develop software and everything connected with it. With Sberbank, these skills are much weaker, in any case, this was the case in the past.

There is a craze for neural networks in the world, the algorithms they serve are heard by ChatGPT, Midjourney and others. There are only a few companies in Russia that can create something similar and are working in this direction, but Sberbank and Yandex can be called key players with ambitions. And here we find confirmation of my thesis that Yandex has become snickering and lazy, as it has begun to rely more on administrative resources than on real competition in the market, while Sberbank, on the contrary, is showing serious progress. Let's look at this statement using the example of neural networks that can draw pictures.

Sberbank is working on such algorithms,They are constantly being improved and trained. Let me remind you that the main thing for neural networks is not only to receive models, but also data for training. The more users try your algorithm, the more likely it is to improve. And that explains why small startups can't win the race without the backing of companies that have access to an audience. The cooperation between Microsoft and OpenAI is exactly this - the first give money and access to a huge audience, the second - algorithms and technologies. In the end, everyone wins without exception.

Last week, Sber gave access to the Kandinsky Telegram bot (version 2.1). You can find it here.

Review Sony XPERIA Ace II

It is believed that, ideally, the novelty is usually compared with its predecessor and competitors. Thus, the manufacturer can clearly ...

Set the description of the picture, choose the style, and go. Look at some of the results of my experiments.

In addition to text queries, you can give your own pictures, they will serve as source material. In general, the toy turned out great, it quickly captured the attention of ordinary people.

Sberbank has been creating its own model for less than a year, progress is clearly visible. The Sber team wrote an excellent text that describes exactly what they did, how they changed the model parameters and improved the result. You can find this text here.

I like the fact that Sber not only createda toy, they also explain what exactly they are doing, how they achieve results, post the source codes of their service, plus make it convenient for ordinary people. In every sense, you can put five. In the first four days, a million unique users used the Telegram bot, and just over 5 million images were created in total. A wonderful result. The thing is attractive and perfectly demonstrates that Russia is not at all behind the board of progress, we have developments that can compete with Western versions of algorithms.

The next day, Yandex decided to keep up in the race and released a beta version of their algorithm, an application called Shedevrum (initially it could not be found by searching).

And here the differences in approaches are very clearly visible. At Yandex, this is some kind of initial version, which obviously cannot be given out, it is just a curve and works extremely poorly. The product is in deep beta, very raw. For some reason, they added registration, as well as approval from Yandex - I couldn’t use the application right away, I played the next day. Here are the results.

To put it mildly, against the background of "Kandinsky" craft from"Yandex" looks weak. To say the least, it's not ready for mass testing, because garbage in means garbage out. There is no model that can be trained here, Yandex did not conduct tests inside, did nothing to say that it turned out well and correctly.

It is not worth drawing far-reaching conclusions here, in the racealgorithms "Yandex" has the ability to catch up with "Sberbank", although so far it does not show even the slightest desire to quickly move in this direction. But here it is important to evaluate the approach - Sber is as open as possible, communicates with people, did everything conveniently and well, describes its technology, opens the code and distributes it. Yandex is closed as much as possible, requires registration, rolled out a raw beta version to the public, the impressions of which are negative. If someone described this situation to me five years ago without the names of companies and asked them to name who did what, I would rearrange them. I would consider that Sberbank rolled out a raw product, but Yandex did everything right. But times are changing, and Yandex is too mired in politics, in finding out which of the developers will leave for which country (read - the company's office). Yandex does not have time for products, they have time for some other things, and this is the next topic.

Top manager of "Yandex" and "traitor of the Motherland" - another scandal in "Yandex"

The old Yandex team, no matter what,is trying to advance its agenda and build a beautiful Russia of the future, in which, unfortunately, there will be no place for many of us. In any case, this feeling is made up of conscious actions that we see from Yandex. The Yandex.Music service can serve as a barometer for this, where weekly calls for the murder of Russian citizens are posted, instructions on how to fight with Russia, and funds are being raised for such murders. Having written several appeals to the prosecutor's office, I received fairly clear answers - no violations of the law were found, there is no extremism in the materials.

Weekly in Yandex.Music" adds Ukrainian compositions, which have a full range of "beautiful", the service does not even moderate such content, it appears on the platform instantly. At the same time, Russian performers claim that moderation is present and their compositions do not get into the service quickly, they are checked for compliance with the rules of Yandex.Music. In my opinion, this well characterizes the situation as a whole, a purposeful anti-Russian policy is being carried out next to us, it is of a systemic nature, but we simply wipe ourselves off and move on. I can't understand how this is even possible. Our readers send weekly examples of the dirt they come across in Yandex.Music. The way they try to write to support and do not receive any answers, they are simply ignored in Yandex. Appeals to the prosecutor's office are not ignored, but they receive exactly the same answers as the one above.

Permissiveness of Ukrainian propaganda in services"Yandex" knows no boundaries, this company is allowed what no one in Russia can afford. To broadcast propaganda of a hostile country non-stop, not to be responsible for it in any way. And every day, in the literal sense, to fight against the state, because by posting this propaganda, the top managers of Yandex made a conscious, adult choice. I do not have enough emotions to describe this situation, it is not just absurd and phantasmagoric, it cannot exist in principle. The soldiers of my country are doing their duty today, while Yandex broadcasts propaganda and calls to kill all Russians. How is that? What should happen in order for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the prosecutor's office and other bodies to start dealing with this issue. More terrorist attacks?

An excellent indicator of the way of thinking and thatdoes "Yandex", was the failed interview of Andrey Sebrant to blogger Stas Vasilyev, known as "Stas Ay How Simple." Initially, Stas talked about technology, but in the last couple of years the focus has shifted to political topics, the focus of publications is patriotic. He does not hide this in any way, as a result he lost his YouTube channel, as a result, he became a frequent visitor to Solovyov and speaks quite unambiguously about political issues.

In March, Stas arranged an interview with AndreySebrant, director of marketing for Yandex services, a person who, among other things, determines the company's policy in certain things. The interview was attended by a representative of the Yandex PR department, but it did not take place. The very first question posed to Sebrant turned out to be too sharp: “The first question I would like to ask about the Yandex company is: why is there such a huge number of people who seem to dislike Russia? It creates such an impression." The answer is short: “I don’t have that feeling close. Excuse me, if we are going to write a political report, then I get up and leave.” Behind the scenes, Sebrant called Stas a "traitor to the Motherland", at the same time forbade the film crew to be in Yandex, to shoot anything, and further down the list. The PR man's attempts to calm Andrey can be heard in the video in the background, but they have no effect. Watch the video, it speaks louder than any words.

The media coverage of this story was a record for"Yandex", not a single event aroused such keen interest. For the most part, the comments are quite unambiguous: the behavior of the Yandex top manager causes misunderstanding or rejection. From a professional point of view, Sebrant is not a top manager prepared for interviews, he simply does not know how to behave in and out of the frame. A person sincerely believes that Yandex is his fiefdom and he is able to refuse the house to anyone, especially those who he does not like. In my opinion, this is a deeply erroneous opinion.

Another mistake lies in the very fact of the interview, but there is nothing new here, PR in Yandex is missing as a class, these guys just sit out their pants at work, they don’t know how to do anything. It is impossible not to understand that the focus of the interview, one way or another, will touch upon issues related to politics, it is impossible. But no one did this, and there was an explosion of emotions on the part of Sebrant, because he, apparently, is waging his own war against the state, but how else can one understand his actions?

The whole story with this interview is like litmusa piece of paper shows the insides of Yandex, more precisely, those people who consider themselves the arbiters of the fate of their employees and those who can determine the ideological policy of Russia. Yandex does not give a damn about Russian laws, they consider themselves above these laws. Want a simple proof? We can assume that calls to kill Russian citizens are a kind of "creativity".

But let's look at the same "Yandex.Music, which constantly hosts opposition podcasts and deliberately ignores Russian laws. For example, if a person is considered a foreign agent, then when publishing the same podcast with his participation, appropriate marking is required. In the summer of 2022, Vladimir Milov was included in the list of foreign media agents, the Yandex.Music service continued to post his podcasts without labeling until the end of the year! However, there is no such marking today. At the same time, there is a link to fundraising for Milov.

It is clear that Yandex believes that the laws forthey don't work. But something else is not clear to me - why do officials think exactly the same way? At what point did all these people in Yandex become inviolable and received indulgence from violating Russian laws? Explain to me how this is possible? It doesn't fit in my head. And I believe that the law must be respected, and Ukrainian propaganda should not be available on Russian resources, of course, if we believe that Yandex is a Russian company. The state helps Yandex in every possible way, gives preferential loans, creates jobs, takes care of the company. Instead of gratitude, we get in return such behavior and confidence that Yandex can spit on the law, spit on people's feelings.

This is not the first time I have raised this topic. My friends, as well as well-meaning colleagues, explain to me why this topic will not be developed in the media - Yandex is one of the largest advertisers in Russia, spends money in the media, and they depend on these budgets. I understand that this is true. But is money really everything and have we lost even the rudiments of self-respect? Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the feeling that my indignation is the voice of one crying in the wilderness. I know that many people hear me, I see that you are reacting and trying to correct the situation. But so far there has been no real progress. Last year, I was assured that explanatory conversations had been held with Yandex and the company's policy would definitely change. It just didn't happen, it's a lie. Yes, they reassured me, they said that a little time should pass and everything will work out. But nothing is changing, and it shouldn't be.

A small survey was conducted in the Telegram channel, you can find it here. The results speak for themselves.

About the “destruction” of Cisco equipment in Russia and Microsoft sanctions

Company accounts are amazing documentsera, but they do not always contain a true reflection of reality. Cisco Systems LLC reported on its assets, it is a Cisco subsidiary that has been operating in Russia since 2006. In particular, the report states that inventories worth 1.86 billion rubles were destroyed, the decision was made in August 2022, and the physical destruction took place in January 2023. At other Russian "subsidiary" Cisco stocks were destroyed in a similar way for 1.1 billion rubles. The total is 2.96 billion rubles in equipment, which today costs about 4 billion rubles at the market rate (about $50 million at current prices).

The act of destroying stocks itself looks likesurprising - it is impossible to take equipment out of Russia, there are restrictions on this. But at the same time, the United States added its own companies to the exclusion list, as a result, Cisco could sell this equipment and not have any problems with violating the sanctions regime. But for some reason they didn't.

Cisco Warehouse Destruction Discussed in the Marketonly as a kind of mythical situation, a kind of representation for American officials when it is necessary to create the appearance of such actions. Cisco, as well as Apple, and other American companies, such as Microsoft, physically destroyed office equipment, computers and everything else. We wrote about how this happens, be curious.

Spillikins No. 725. The ban on remote work in Russia is a broken phone

About the ban on remote work in Russia; negotiablefine for data leakage; destruction of equipment in the offices of Western companies; Elon Musk and free speech on Twitter; scooter from Yandex; Midjourney and Harry Potter, as well as Gaudi;

But it's one thing - old computers and desks in the office, quite another - a warehouse with new equipment for 50 million dollars. There are simply no examples of the real destruction of the warehouse of a particular company in Russia. The system integrators with whom I discussed this issue, as one, are sure that all the equipment has found a new owner, and the scheme was negotiated - the money was paid outside of Russia, the equipment was received here at a discount. This version is supported by the fact that Cisco made it possible to activate the equipment that previously fell under the restrictions. As my interlocutor said, “last summer they suddenly turned a blind eye to sanctions, everything worked almost as before, and then slingshots arose again.” This incomprehensible fact can be explained by the fact that someone received the equipment from Russian warehouses and it had to be activated from buyers.

From the outside, such transactions lookoutside the legal field, but here I do not presume to judge how it all happened. According to the documents, we see the destruction of equipment, but the whole story looks incredible, in some ways fantastic.

It is well complemented by recognition from Microsoft, which sheds light on how corporate business works - everything revolves around profits and sales, and the same sanctions are an annoying hindrance that can be bypassed. Let me remind you that Microsoft continues to sell its products to Russia, does not block their activation, in a word, makes every effort to preserve Europe's largest market. But, as usual, he does it secretly.

When I talked about the fact that after the introductionsanctions in 2014 and the inclusion of Crimea in the list of territories prohibited for American companies Microsoft organized a scheme to sell its software, I was laughed at. And they said that it was impossible even in theory, the American company honors the laws of its country too much, the punishment for specific managers can be up to criminal. In a word, do not rave, Microsoft does nothing of the sort.

But at the same time, I saw how they buy in Krasnodartens of thousands of Windows licenses, buying big solutions, and so on. Only on licenses for office software, the company earned a net income of about $ 26 million over five years. The total turnover in Crimea is much higher. But formally Microsoft was not there. Sales to the Crimea have always been referred to as the "Krasnodar branch", in the Russian office it was a secret from almost everyone. Interestingly, in 2018-2019, the Russian Microsoft was audited to find software supplies to the Crimea, each of the audits was passed with a bang, it was not possible to find any. But inside the company they were ironic that "Krasnodar Territory shows unprecedented rates of sales growth, the economy has flourished." The secret was public, they simply preferred to turn a blind eye to reality.

On April 6, 2023, Microsoft recognizeda number of violations of the sanctions regime against individual countries and territories, including Crimea. The company will pay a total fine of $3.3 million, for which all charges against it and its employees will be dropped.

Also, these actions will be recognized as erroneous, butnot intentional. In simple terms, we can say that Microsoft agreed with officials in the United States, closed the sins of previous periods and did it very technically. Now it is impossible to prosecute Microsoft for selling software to Iran or Cuba or Crimea. It’s hard for me to imagine how much income the company received over five years of such sales, but only Crimea brought in $ 26 million on office software (net profit!). Therefore, we can say that Microsoft can pay fines for a long time and will not lose anything from this. A penny against the background of the profit that the company received. This means that ten years later, Microsoft will again admit that some kind of software got into Russia, but they don’t give a damn about it and are ready to pay a fine to stop the investigation.

The history of Microsoft fits perfectly with the story of"destruction" of Cisco technology, explains the principles of the work of corporations, where money is the same golden calf that is worshiped, and nothing can be done about it.

Google is tightening their belts, food stations have gone under the knife

I remember that when I first got to the Google office invalley, I looked with interest at food stations where I could refresh myself, a large cafeteria and other achievements of an advanced company. In the face of a shortage of trained employees, they were lured by various benefits, during the day they could swim in small pools, go for a massage. Most of these things, of course, were paid for out of pocket by employees, they often did not receive the money that went to additional benefits. But on the whole, it still created a mood, distinguished Google and other companies in the valley from everyone else. The same "Yandex" copied this style, scattered small food stations throughout all offices. Every time I visit Yandex offices, I ironically say that they don’t do anything else here, they just constantly eat and play with toys.

A crisis is a time when companies startshrink in costs, savings should be observed in everything. Today there is no shortage of personnel, rather exactly the opposite - IT companies are hastily getting rid of their employees, there are too many of them, they are too expensive. As a result, those who remain work harder and start shaking for their places. Under such conditions, it is not difficult to remove additional benefits, no one will protest - there is work, and this is already good. In the US, Google is beginning to reduce the number of food stations, remove free food or limit the number of cafes on the territory of its offices.

Until recently, many employees couldpurchase iron at the expense of the company, for example, buy any smartphone. What created a surprising situation, inside Google, most employees used iPhones, did not purchase Pixels. For what? If the company pays for a more expensive device and does not impose any restrictions on the use of third-party devices. Apple has never had such freedom, the choice of products has always been limited to the company's devices.

From now on, employees can only apply fornative devices, and this applies not only to smartphones, but also to computers: the MacBook Pro is becoming a thing of the past, most employees will get a Chromebook - a painful transition in every sense. Additional accessories will need to either be bought at your own expense, or justify their need, they will not turn a blind eye to spending.

For office workers replacement of laptops andother equipment will be suspended, if they fail, they will receive native Chromebooks. The reason is that they don't need up-to-date hardware, it becomes a luxury. And here it can be argued that Google will receive very significant savings on hardware (and there is also the payment of communication bills, there will also be cost cuts for most employees).

Google can and should be viewed as a role-playingmodel for all IT companies in the world, they will move from a period of prosperity to austerity and begin to reduce their non-essential expenses. What was an added and pleasant bonus will disappear for most people. The reason is that the very presence of a job will soon become a bonus, and the number of applicants for a job is already going through the roof. And this is the situation in the USA, Europe and other countries of the world.

Curiously, labor law in Europeturned out to be tougher than in the US. And it’s impossible to fire thousands of people in one day, as is happening in America, so IT giants are looking for ways to cut their staff in the most economical way, while worsening working conditions, cutting off all additional benefits. This may push someone away from work, but I doubt that there will be many such people and they understand what is happening. Every day companies will cut corporate benefits, and this is a general trend for all countries and all companies, there will be no exceptions. Somewhere it will happen faster, somewhere it will take longer. But the goal is always the same - to cut costs. And it will also affect the size of offices, the number of employees who go out to them every day.

Virtual fitting rooms - the hundredth approach to the projectile

It's hard for me to remember what year I firstI saw a virtual fitting room, I remember exactly that it was at CeBIT in Hannover about twenty years ago. Since then, hundreds of startups have been applied to this projectile, which have tried to create a universal solution, but such fitting rooms have not become massive. For example, the other day the Russian startup Zero10 appeared in three European cities - London, Berlin and Milan. Three Tommy Hilfiger stores have virtual fitting rooms where you can see the clothes from the Tommy Hilfiger x Shawn Mendes collaboration for yourself.

The problem for shops or fashion brands is always inthe same thing - clothes need to be digitized so that they can be shown in such fitting rooms. Any digitization of clothes is worth the extra cost, and often it is not justified, especially if you have a wide range of models. Hence the rather low penetration of such fitting rooms - their idea is understandable, but the implementation is fraught with significant costs. In times of crisis, it's a show to bring people to flagship stores, not technology to sell or charge more for your merchandise. As a result, such fitting rooms will only stand for a couple of weeks, they are paid from the marketing budget, then they will simply be removed as unnecessary.

A good and correct idea that does not causeno doubt - to try on clothes without undressing. But even in the demo video, the current limitations are visible: a girl in the most tight sportswear, since otherwise flaws are possible, the image in the mirror will be far from ideal. The technology is still not ready for mass application, it is impossible to put it on stream, to make it inexpensive. And the demand among buyers is greatly overestimated. Such fitting rooms should be on the screen of your smartphone, they are appropriate when ordering goods on the Internet so that you can evaluate the clothes for yourself. In a physical store where clothes are available and you can try them on, it's silly to use such a fitting room. Perhaps it will be needed for situations where there are simply no clothes and you can leave a pre-order for it. Then it's at least understandable. But in all other cases, all this is definitely past the cash register.

Are you ready to use such fitting rooms, and not try on clothes the old fashioned way? What do you think of these mirrors?

Non/Fiction Book Fair Spring 2023

At the weekend I got to the Non/Fiction fair, which traditionally takes place in Gostiny Dvor on Ilyinka, not far from Red Square.

The design of the fair progresses from time to time, there are stands that are not directly related to the publication of books. For example, now there were posters of the Soviet era, movie posters. I liked the alphabet, where each letter is filled with meanings.

Or a pyramid of glasses.

There are a lot of books, but if last timeleft packed to the eyeballs, then this time did not like anything. I bought the album "Street Art" in 2018, a kind of rarity that is not in great demand. I looked at a book about the Nansen expedition with a huge number of illustrations and documentary records. A very interestingly published book, the circulation is scanty, it will quickly become a rarity. I'm thinking of going back and buying it.

But it was not possible to meet something like that at the collapses, it happens sometimes. New books do not go into hands, or the head is busy with something else. I paid attention to the books "written" by ChatGPT, question and answer.

There are already a huge number of such books, but the meaning inthey are zero or even less. It's like books on the development of some application, which retell the file "Help", based on the inability of people to master the basics of computer literacy.

Some publishers are trying to keep up withagendas, create covers using neural network algorithms, emphasize this. The technology is well-known, and, like the prefix “nano” at one time, they are trying to attach it wherever possible. Soon there will be dishes created by the neural network in restaurants (maybe I missed them and they already have them). I hope that the fashion for this will pass more or less quickly, otherwise we will be sad to live.

P.S. Spring has come into its own, the sun is on the streets, the time for walking is almost perfect - dry roads, birds sing, the weather whispers. I hope that you will find time not to sit in front of the screens, but to unload your brains and walk, get some air. Have a good working week, and I hope that it will bring a good mood to all of us and support us in good deeds. Good luck!
