Announcement. TCL 40 NxtPaper and TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G - smartphones with conditionally paper-like screens

TCL has a curioustechnology called NxtPaper. Like paper-like screens. But not like E-Ink, which work in reflected light. And almost normal, with IPS-like matrices. Only specially modified. As if matte, slightly glare in the light. It seems to be very useful for the eyes. Yes, and tactilely different from the usual screens. (I myself have not seen such screens live. But those who have seen them, it seems, treat them very favorably).

Until now, NxtPaper technology has not been used in smartphones. Only on tablets. But now it's smartphone time. Meet the sweet couple
TCL 40 NxtPaper and
TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G.

Smartphones are very different. So we will consider them separately.

TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G

Let's start with the older model TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G. It is based on last year's TCL 40R 5G smartphone. They just changed the matrix to a paper-like one, added memory, and replaced the chipset.

However, the chipset has changed purely symbolically.There was MediaTek Dimensity 700, it became MediaTek Dimensity 6020. By and large, the same thing, only under a different name. In AnTuTu we are waiting for about 400K points. Acceptable.

Memory became 6 + 256 GB. The increase is solid - it was, at best, 4 + 128 GB. Support for memory cards is available.

The screen, despite being paper-like, is otherwise very trivial. Diagonal 6.6 ″ (105 cm²), slightly increased refresh rate - 90 Hz. The resolution is low, only 267 ppi (720 × 1612).

The battery is standard, 5000 mAh. Charging is slightly accelerated, 15 watts.

The set of cameras does not inspire optimism. 8 MP front, 50+2+2 MP rear. The main camera sensor, judging by the declared characteristics, is our favorite Samsung ISOCELL JN1.

NFC-module and a side fingerprint scanner are available. But there is no gyroscope.

The TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G will cost €249 (₽25,700, $269) at the start of sales in Europe.

TCL 40 NxtPaper 4G

TCL 40 NxtPaper 4G is somewhat more interestinghis formally older brother. But here the iron let us down. Could instead of MediaTek Helio G88 put something more interesting. If we crawl up to 300K in AnTuTu, it will be magical.

All is well with memory. 8 GB RAM, 256 GB permanent (plus there is support for memory cards).

The screen is bigger, as much as 6.78″ (109 cm²). And the resolution is higher - 396 ppi (1080 × 2460). The refresh rate is the same - up to 90 Hz.

Battery. Standard. 5010 mAh. And charging is more cheerful, 33 watts.

Cameras. 32 MP front, 50+5+2 MP rear. Yes, also Samsung ISOCELL JN1, unfortunately. But at least a simple wide-angle appeared.

NFC-module and fingerprint scanner are present.

The TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G will cost €199 (₽20,500, $215) at the start of sales in Europe.
