Dogs are among the first to be tamed.human animals - they have been cohabiting with us for over 40,000 years. During this time, they learned to perfectly understand some words and gestures, which was recently proved by scientists from the US state of Georgia. With all this, researchers still did not know how well people themselves understand dogs. To find out, a group of scientists from the Max Planck Society for Scientific Research conducted a rather interesting experiment, the results of which were published in the scientific journal Science Daily.
89 scientists took part in a scientific experimentadults and 77 children. They were divided into different groups according to age, positive or negative attitude towards dogs in the family, and the presence or absence of dogs. Volunteers were shown photographs of people, dogs, and monkeys showing happiness, sadness, anger, and fright. The participants were tasked with determining the emotional state of people and animals. Adults were also asked to determine when the shots were taken, for example, during a game or before attacking another animal.
By the way, Max Planck, after whom the Society for Scientific Research is named, is a famous theoretical physicist. One of his discoveries can be found in the material “What is Light?”
Do people and dogs understand each other?
The results of the study showed that the mainalmost all people of all ages can determine a dog’s mood like happiness and anger. Only here, only adult participants of the experiment managed to catch a finer emotional coloring of the photos. Based on this, scientists concluded that the ability to recognize the emotions of pets comes to people with age. But the ability to understand dogs is influenced by several other factors.
For example, researchers noticed that people fromFamilies with a positive attitude towards dogs understand animals well, even if they have no pets at home. This may be due to the fact that, unlike people with a neutral and negative attitude towards animals, they at least have an interest in them. In addition, they can interact with them at a party or on the street and with age learn to better understand the emotions of dogs.
Do you know how a dog feels when they shout at it?
The fact that almost all participants in the experimentperfectly determined the happy and angry mood of the dogs, the researchers explained as follows. According to them, the ability to recognize the two main emotions of animals is almost an innate skill of people. Even if you consider that this is not an innate skill, people can learn to recognize happiness and anger more quickly than to understand such emotions as sadness and fear.
According to study author Juliana Breuer,it would be good to conduct additional research on the subject of human understanding of canine emotions. She wants to know more precisely which environmental factors affect a person’s ability to understand animals. However, it is still unknown whether further research will be conducted on this topic.
And how well do you understand animals? You can give your answer in the comments or in our Telegram chat.
Dogs are considered very smart animals, butBritish and New Zealand scientists have a completely different opinion on this subject. In their opinion, people overestimate the abilities of their pets, because they are not much smarter than the same chimpanzee monkeys. You can read more about this in our material.
