The first experience in producing a mass electric carVolkswagen concern in the form of a serial hatchback ID.3 was not entirely successful due to the "crude" software. The company management decided to change the marketing policy and is developing a strategy for launching the most affordable, inexpensive national electric car on the market.
The previous program included work ona low-cost electric car in the Seat division, while the parent company Volkswagen would account for quite expensive and complex electric car models. However, the economic crisis, complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, made adjustments to the company's plans, and it was decided to release an inexpensive model under the Volkswagen brand based on the simplified VW MEB platform. In the future, on the basis of this electric car, a full-fledged lineup of cars will be developed.
Volkswagen currently offers threemodels are affordable and small-sized models that are manufactured under three brands: Volkswagen e-Up, Seat Mii Electric and Skoda Citigo-e iV. The design of these cars is a modified version of models with internal combustion engines, so these cars can hardly be called full-fledged electric vehicles. The new model will initially be designed as a full-fledged electric car.
The main task of developers is to reduce the costelectric vehicle, the transfer of this class of equipment from the elite to the mass market segment. The initial goal is to reduce prices to 20 thousand euros (taking into account all privileges, benefits and discounts). For these purposes, the developers choose the MEB Entry platform as a basis, instead of the more expensive VW MEB used in the Volkswagen ID.3, Seat El-Born and Skoda Enyaq models.
In order to reduce the cost of the new electric carIt is planned to reduce the power and weight of the engine, simplify the battery pack by reducing capacity and removing premium features such as quick charge or forced liquid cooling. Perhaps, the frame strength parameters, which are not so important for low-speed and compact cars, will also be reduced. At the same time, developers, while not reducing driving safety, are also striving to preserve the travel range optimal for cities on a single battery charge.
Project development of a new full-fledged nationalVolkswagen's electric car is in its infancy. There is no information about specific technical parameters, nor about the fate of compact models ID.1 and ID.2, already available in the concern and also included in the price segment up to 20 thousand euros, with a minimum battery capacity of 24-36 kWh and an autonomous travel range up to 300 km. It is possible that for a new electric car completely created from scratch, a special brand will be created that allows the consumer not to get confused in numerous Volkswagen electric models.
