There are huge robots for parcel deliverymany, but most of them can not even reach the door of the recipients - they are hampered by steep steps in front of houses. The Japanese company Amoeba Energy solved this problem quite easily by equipping the robot courier with a soft crawler chassis that clings to the ledges and allows it to climb steadily even along steep spiral staircases. So far this is only a prototype, but mass production is scheduled for 2020.
According to engineer Yusei Kudzhiraya, the caterpillars fromethylene-propylene rubber provide a large contact area of the robotic design with protruding surfaces. On the video published by the developers, it is clear that the robot really quickly and confidently climbs steep stairs - the caterpillar blocks during movement are compressed and firmly cling to the steps.
Amazon robots have a competitor
Seems Amazon Scout Robot Designersit was worth equipping them with just such tracks. Instead, they used simple wheels and, as a result, in some cases, robotic couriers are not able to take the parcels right to the door of the recipients. Who knows - maybe someday Amoeba Energy robots will replace them?
Amazon created robots to deliver packages, butthey cannot climb and descend the stairs, so in order to pick up the package, the person still has to go beyond the threshold of his house. We believe that our soft and comfortable robot that can climb stairs will finally automate the delivery of parcels, ”shared Yusey Kudzhiray.
The commercial version of the robot Amoeba Energy will receivename AE-01, and will be able to lift cargo weighing up to 6 kilograms. His body, like the caterpillars, will be covered with soft material - as if the creators were not confident in their offspring, no one can guarantee that it will not fall from the stairs directly to people.
