The European Union passed a law according to whichall future smartphones sold in the EU, including the iPhone, will feature a universal USB-C port for charging. The measure should come into effect by autumn 2024.
The law will also apply to other electronic devices, including tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld game consoles and e-readers.
The law has been under consideration for many years.years. As the legislators stated, “today we have made a single charger a reality in Europe!”. They believe that Europeans have long been unhappy with the fact that each device needs its own charger. Now the problem will disappear.
Of course, the law mainly hits Apple, which has been developing the proprietary Lightning connector all this time.
