Tourists make their way to the "Martian station" in the United States and interfere with experiments

The Martian Society is a non-profitan organization dedicated to the topic of the colonization of Mars. It was founded in 1998 by American engineer Robert Zubrin and has received a lot of support from many science fiction writers and filmmakers. At the moment, there are about 11,000 people in the society, and they all inform the public about the benefits of exploring Mars and its future colonization. The Society has its own base Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), which is located in one of the deserts of Utah. Different groups of people live on it as they would on the surface of Mars. Usually crews rotate every two weeks and conduct medical, geological and astronomical research. Station director Shannon Rupert recently shared that research is getting in the way of tourists.

Intruders at the Martian Station

Details about the main problem of the Martianstations on Earth, she shared in the publication According to her, tourists began to actively visit the base after a break due to the coronavirus pandemic. One day she spent the night at the station to meet the members of the new crew. At first, the woman was repairing the water supply system and fell asleep, when suddenly she was awakened by the barking of dogs. Through a small window, she saw that one of the structures was heavily lit. The woman thought it was just the light of the full moon and continued to sleep. A few weeks later, professional photographs taken by a photographer who had infiltrated the private territory came to the mail of the Martian Society.

Mars station MDRS

Needless to say, the members of society were thisunhappy. They rent this territory, and entering it is the same as intruding into someone else's house. Over the past few months, researchers have spotted flying drones and tourists loitering around the area. Most likely, this is due to the greater interest of people in space. It should also be borne in mind that during a pandemic, many people prefer to relax in nature, away from crowds. In addition, social networks contribute to the penetration into the territory of the MDRS station. When someone uploads photos of "Martian" objects, others also want to take the same shots.

Social media is a huge problem becausethat disinformation spreads in them like wildfire. People post photos, and everyone wants to go and do the same on their own. For a while, people walked around the MDRS compound every day. It turned out that someone posted a photo with the coordinates of the station on social networks, - Shannon Rupert shared.

Simulated life on Mars

On the one hand, it's good that people are interested instation. After all, the task of the Martian community is both to attract attention. But too many visitors hinder research. Scientists are trying to recreate the possible life of people on Mars as realistically as possible. They will definitely experience the problems associated with isolation, because the distance to Earth will at times reach 401 million kilometers. Researchers wonder what it feels like to be alone. But how to achieve such a feeling when people can be seen on the nearby hills every now and then?

Russian tourists also visit the MDRS station

I like to meet random guests by allowingthey have a close-up view of the station as the crews leave. One of the best things about doing this job is seeing someone's eyes light up at the thought that humans might actually go to the planet Mars. <...> From the moment I returned to the station earlier this year, I began to spend more time driving people out of the territory than welcoming them, ”the researcher admitted.

According to her, most touristsdisappointed, but remain polite. But there are also those who threaten to call the police. In response, members of the Martian Community posted signs around the area that it was a private area. This means that outsiders are not allowed to enter, as is the use of drones. They also contacted the owners of sites that publish information on the exact location of the MDRS station and spoke with local businessmen. They encouraged them to help educate people that their actions could interfere with research. All of these measures work so-so, but they are better than nothing.

The Martian MDRS station is far fromone of a kind. Recently, the Austrian Space Forum decided to conduct a similar experiment AMADEE-20, in which six volunteers will live in the Israeli Negev desert. You can read more about this project here.
