The first performance tests of the Apple M1 Max. Spoiler - faster than RTX 3080 (3 photos)

During the presentation of the latest branded processorsApple's M1 Max and M1 Pro developers have announced the unique capabilities and high performance of chips manufactured using the 5nm process technology. Independent experts immediately decided to check the parameters of the processors and evaluate their performance during testing.

The first to be tested was the top-end M1 Max chip with32-core GPU. Each core has 16 execution units with 8 arithmetic and logistic units. The result is 4096 stream processors.

Based on the statements of Apple representatives, “onpaper ”the calculated performance of the M1 Max GPU will be about 10.4 TFLOPS, which is comparable to the GeForce RTX 3060 Mobile, which demonstrates a performance of 10.91 teraflops.

During the presentation of the chip, the Apple developerscompared the M1 Max GPU with Nvidia's GeForce RTX 3080 Mobile GPU. However, at equivalent performance, Apple's chip consumes only 60 watts of power, which is 100 watts less than the GeForce RTX 3080. Testing was performed using the GFXBench 5 benchmark on macOS X and the Metal low-level API.

Processors used during the testGeForce RTX 3080 Mobile or Radeon RX 6800M and M1. Apple's new chip performed well against discrete GPUs from Nvidia and AMD, and even outperformed the competition in some tests (Manhattan). It should be remembered that the TDP of the GeForce RTX 3080 Mobile and the Radeon RX 6800M is 160 W and 145 W, respectively, while for the M1 Max this value is 60 W.

Testing also confirmed Apple's claims of the M1 Max's significant performance superiority over previous branded M1 processors.
