To solve this problem, researchers from the US Geological Survey (USGS), together with specialists from NASA, compiled a detailed map of the moon with unprecedented detail. The world's first geological map of the moon is made up of six different lunar maps, some of which were created in the era of Apollo flights. Each color on the Unified Geological Map of the Moon identifies individual rocks or sediments that consist of craters, pools, and even ancient lava fields. Let me remind you that more than 40% of the visible side of the moon is occupied by the sea - dark areas covered with frozen lava deposits.

Their edges were not entirely accurate, the markings sometimes differed, or the description and age of a particular breed did not match. However, all the work was worth it, because the new lunar map is not only a collage of data collected over the years of Apollo missions, but also new data from a myriad of lunar missions, as well as information collected using space satellites.
The surface area of the moon is 58 million square kilometers. This is more than the area of Africa, but less than the area of Asia.
So, data on the relief of the moon and the area aroundthe equator was collected using the lunar orbiting apparatus of the Japan aerospace research agency SELENE (Selenological and Engineering Explorer), and the topography of the north and south poles was supplemented by data obtained using the NASA Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter.
