The first genetically modified twins were born in China (3 photos + video)

These days edit the human genomeonly allowed in a few countries. It is believed that China is leading in this area. It was here that three years ago, for the first time, researchers conducted an experiment with editing the genome of human embryos. CRISPR / Cas9 technology helped them in this. And just recently, Chinese scientists made a loud statement. According to them, they were born for the first time genetically modified twins. True, independent sources do not confirm this achievement, which has an incredibly revolutionary potential.

The development team worked on the SouthScience and Technology University, headed by He Jiankuya, in the Chinese city of Shenzhen. The girls were called Lulu and Nana. The project manager said in a video message that girls with genes edited using CRISPR-Cas9 are completely healthy.

Journalists have already found the corresponding the electronic register of experiments related to editing the human genome using the CRISPR / Cas9 system. Scientists used this technology to edit only one gene - CCR5. They made changes designed to ensure that the newborn is immune to HIV infection.

According to experts, independentresearch laboratories studied the materials with the results of the operation, which they received from their colleagues from China. They could not make an unequivocal conclusion about the absolute success and the absence of risks to the health of the little ones.
