The deepest octopus puzzled scientists

Over the last 100 years of observing researchersoceans sometimes managed to detect at great depths not only fish, but also octopuses. It was believed that cephalopods can sink to a depth of 3,000 meters, but in 1971 an octopus was photographed in the vicinity of the island of Barbados, which lived at a depth of 5145 meters! Then it seemed like something incredible, and since then, scientists have not been able to capture these invertebrates even lower. They concluded that octopuses cannot climb to a depth below 6,000 meters on their own. However, the new discovery of the Five Depths expedition called into question this statement: the researchers were able to photograph the octopus at a depth of almost 7000 meters!

The find was made during the expedition, whichwas held in 2019. It was dedicated to exploring the deepest places of the five oceans. During a dive in the Sunda Trench of the Indian Ocean, the maximum depth of which exceeds 7,000 meters, unusual cephalopods were discovered. Yes, the octopus would not be alone - these were two individuals that hit the camera lens twice. Discovered invertebrates belong to the genus Grimpoteuthis; they are also called "Dumbo octopuses", the fins on the sides of their mantle resemble the ears of an elephant from the same cartoon. Moreover, if the first octopus fell into the lens at a depth of almost 5,800 meters, which is also a lot, the second climbed much deeper - at 6,957 meters.

Despite the fact that octopuses of this speciesreferred to as deep-sea, before scientists could not even think that these creatures could swim so deeply. The length of the first octopus found was 43 centimeters, and the second - 35 centimeters, that is, a smaller one swam to a greater depth. Shellfish almost did not pay attention to either the camera or the bait, which the researchers placed.

This discovery greatly puzzled scientists, becausenew observations expand the range of octopuses by as much as 2,000 meters in depth. Researchers may have encountered an unusual population of these invertebrates, and this is a “one-time action,” but there is every reason to believe that octopuses are found at such depths around the world. And maybe even deeper. In this case, octopuses can have access to almost 99% of the entire seabed.
