Electricity accumulation problem,generated by solar, wind or hydroelectric power plants is one of the main obstacles to the widespread introduction of ecological energy. Among the ways to solve this problem can be called the principle of gravitational batteries, which allows you to save energy from renewable sources and then use it with an efficiency of up to 90%.
The technology was proposed by a Scottish companyGravitricity in 2020. The developers announced the construction of a prototype, on which tests will be carried out to accumulate 250 kW of energy by lifting a load with a total weight of up to 50 tons to a height of 15 meters. Now Scottish engineers have reported the first successful tests. The cost of the test rig, which lifted two 25 ton loads to a height of 15 meters, was only $ 1.385 million.
Gravitational redundant storageof electrical energy, created by Gravitricity engineers, will allow even at the test bench to generate up to 250 kW and will become the basis for the development of serial installations that can be used, for example, in mines that have exhausted their resource. Later, the load raised due to the receipt of excess energy at a height can be used to generate electricity at peak times, when the load on the power grid reaches its maximum.
Currently, Gravitricity is negotiating the introduction of gravitational batteries with the owners of abandoned mines in the UK, Scandinavia, Poland and the Czech Republic.
