Samsung developers have recognized theirdefeat in the competition for the creation of the most efficient and economical cores for processors. Samsung executives announced the closure of an Austin-based research unit specializing in upgrading ARM cores for Exynos processors. Starting December 31, 290 employees of the center will be dismissed, and the licensed ARM core will be used in the processors.
Already created and developed modernizedSamsung cores will be used in mid-range devices. Commenting on the application to the Texas Labor Commission for the closure of the unit in Austin, a Samsung spokesman said that this reorganization of the technical process was related to the need to optimize the business and increase the competitiveness of devices.
Samsung developers have recognized that createdQualcomm processors outperform Exynos chips in energy efficiency and performance. Moreover, in the future, the gap with the leader will grow, which was the main reason for making a difficult decision.
The previously introduced Exynos 990 chip will continue to use modified cores, however, promising developments will already be based entirely on licensed ARM cores.
Samsung representatives also saidthat the production unit in Austin will not be reduced and all 3 thousand workers will remain in their places. The situation with the development of our own processors can also be corrected by the intensification of partnerships with AMD. As a result, by 2021 it is planned to present the first graphic processors, which will be one of the steps towards creating a gaming smartphone.
