  • The Guinness Book of Records has officially recognized the LG Gram 16 as the lightest 16-inch laptop. And no wonder, because the device weighs only 1.18 kg.

Gram models have always been designed to maximizelight - hence the name, which refers to 17-inch and 13-inch laptops. LG added another 16-inch version this year to compete with the MacBook Pro 16.

LG laptops of yesteryear suffered from size, performance and could not compete with models like the Dell XPS 17 or MacBook Pro 16. Although the Gram 16 does not have a discrete graphics card, but we get quite good specifications: Core i7-1165G7, 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB SSD and IPS- display with aspect ratio 16:10.

    Design and appearance

LG Gram 16 laptop feels incredibly lightdevice. Take it in your hands, and you will feel that there is nothing at all inside the case. But, even taking into account the low weight, LG was able to fit powerful hardware and an autonomous battery of 80 W / h into the case. For example, the XPS 15 has an 86 Wh battery and the laptop weighs 2.0 kg.

It turns out that the Gram 16 has a larger display andalmost half the mass. However, the MacBook Pro 16 has a 100Wh battery, which is the maximum power allowed so that the device can be taken on an airplane, although it weighs an Apple laptop - 1.95 kg.

How did LG manage to make the Gram 16 so easy? All thanks to the use of magnesium alloy for the case, and the thinnest. But, it flexes easily even with minimal pressure. You will practically feel the components inside. Alas, this is the price to pay for such a low weight.

However, the device meets the standardMIL-STD-810G and protected against shock, water, dust. However, in practice, it still seems that under any drop or pressure, the LG laptop will break, although this is not the case. The manufacturer somehow managed to implement a hinge that allows the laptop to be opened with one hand. This is surprising considering that the bottom of the case has almost no weight.

In terms of design, Gram 16 is the easiestlaptop among competitive models. He has a nice body color and a complete lack of bright elements. This is intentional, with LG describing the style as being minimalistic and designed not to distract from the laptop's main purpose. There is a choice of silver, white and black colors on sale.

    Connectors and communication

One of the important advantages of the LG Gram 16 is the many connectors. We have two USB-Cs with Thunderbolt 4 support, two USB-A 3.2s, a full-sized HDMI port, a microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm combo input.

This set is better than the XPS 15, which has two USB-C Thunderbolt 3, only one USB-C 3.1, and no HDMI port at all. However, the MacBook Pro 16 boasts four Thunderbolt 3s.

In terms of connectivity, the Gram 16 supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, here we get almost all the latest technologies for wireless data exchange.

    Display and sound

Laptops with 16:10 or 3 aspect ratio:2 are becoming more and more popular. The traditional 16: 9 widescreen displays are likely to be a thing of the past soon. The LG Gram 16 has a 16-inch IPS LCD display. aspect ratio 16:10, and resolution - WQXGA (2560 × 1600 pixels).

Thanks to the small bezels, you have a large and easy-to-use screen. Unfortunately, the Gram 16's panel specifications are inferior to some premium laptops.

On the one hand, the screen boasts a widecoverage of color space AdobeRGB - 88%. Any value over 75% is considered excellent, and sRBG coverage is 100%. On the other hand, the shades are not very accurate here: DeltaE is 2.67, when 1.0 or less is considered an excellent indicator. For example, the 4K display of the XPS 15 has a score of only 0.65, while the MacBook Pro 16 has a score of 1.41.

The screen brightness of the Gram 16 reaches 313 nits - a littleabove 300 nits sufficient for comfortable use. But here, too, the LG laptop is inferior to competitors from Dell or Apple, where the brightness is 442 and 443 nits, respectively. However, the worst aspect of the Gram 16's display is the 830: 1 contrast ratio. Nowadays, high-quality matrices have a value of at least 1000: 1, the MacBook Pro is capable of boasting a contrast ratio of 1250: 1, while the XPS 15 is generally 1480: 1.

But, LG's Gram 16 screen leaves a goodimpression thanks to the size and aspect ratio. If you are working with content professionally, you will need more accurate colors and better contrast. However, for watching movies and everyday tasks, the available characteristics will be sufficient.

The sound quality of the LG laptop is not bad,the volume is enough for comfortable viewing of YouTube and Netflix, there is almost no distortion. Although the mids and highs are clear, the low end is lacking. The speakers on the XPS 15 and MacBook Pro 16 sound better - especially on the Apple model.

    Keyboard and touchpad

The Gram 16 has a quite typical island keyboardtype with a pleasant ride and backlight. The black keys have a comfortable size and sufficient distance, the travel is large, and the pressing occurs with a clear feedback. The only complaint is that you have to press too hard, the keyboard seemed a little stiff to me, unlike Apple's Magic Keyboard.

The touchpad is large due to the spaciousnessunder the keyboard, although it could have been even larger. The surface is smooth and comfortable for cursor control, and there is excellent support for Windows 10 multitouch gestures thanks to Microsoft Precision drivers. Pressing the touchpad is virtually silent.

But, since the display of the LG Gram 16 is non-touch, you won't be able to scroll through the pages using the screen.

The power button has a built-in fingerprint reader with support for Windows 10 Hello. Authorization is fast and error-free, however, I would like to see the possibility of face recognition.

    Component performance

In the tested configuration, the LG Gram 16 wasinstalled processor Core i7-1165G7. This popular Tiger Lake chipset provides high performance and fast content handling.

Like many laptop manufacturers latelytime, LG offers the user the ability to choose between different operating modes: quiet, optimal and productive. The difference is mainly felt in the fan noise.

U-series processor usage is importantrole, as many larger laptops like the XPS 15, 17 or MacBook Pro 16 run on 45W U-series systems. They are much better suited for professional content work. The same applies to the graphics core, the Gram 16 has integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics, which does not even come close to competing discrete graphics cards.

In Geekbench test 5 differences between operating modesalmost not. LG's model is slightly superior to the Dell XPS 13 and Razer Book 13 with the faster Core i7-1185G7, although the XPS 15 and MacBook Pro 16 are ahead. The Cinebench R23 benchmark didn’t get much better, with the test laptop reaching 4137 points in multi-core mode and 1394 points in single-core mode. This is noticeably worse than even the results of the XPS 13 and Razer Book 13.

However, with normal use, problems withperformance you will not feel. The laptop performs exactly as it should, with similar characteristics. But remember, this does not apply to graphics capabilities.

In theory, Iris Xe's integrated graphics are notinferior to discrete entry-level graphics cards like the NVIDIA GeForce MX350. However, even in this aspect, the “optimal” mode of the Gram 16 fails. In the GFXBanch Car test, the laptop scores only 61 points.

In Fortnite, LG's laptop was able to deliver everything13 fps at high settings and 1080p resolution. Most of these devices on Intel Iris Xe have about 30 fps, but in "productive" mode we get 33 fps. This is an average for the class, so buying this laptop for professional content work is not worth it.

    Battery autonomy

As mentioned, the LG Gram 16 is powered bya large 80 Wh battery, despite its incredibly light weight. In addition, there is a quite energy efficient processor, although the 16-inch display with a higher resolution. It was hard for me to guess how autonomous the battery is.

As it turned out, the Gram 16 has one of the best batteries.among all laptops in general, capable of working incredibly long. In the PCMark 10 Gaming test, which loads the processor and video card to the maximum, the device shows a result of five hours. The closest pursuer - XPS 13 Full HD +, has an hour less result.

PCMark 10 Applications Time Testbattery life when performing normal tasks, the energy of the Gram 16 is enough for almost 18 hours. That's three hours longer than the Lenovo Yoga 9i 14, and seven hours longer than the XPS 13.

If you watch a video in Full HD resolution, the timebattery life of the LG ultrabook will reach 24.5 hours. The Lenovo Yoga 640 with 10th Gen Core i3 delivers 23 hours of use, while the Dell Latitude 7410 2-in-1 Low Power delivers less than 22 hours.

The best results in all tests will show onlylaptops from Apple on ARM-processors. Therefore, the autonomy of the Gram 16 is incredible, and when performing normal tasks, you can easily have enough energy for two full days of work without recharging.

    Alternatives to LG Gram 16

The tested version of LG Gram 16 has several main competitors:

  • Dell XPS 15 with 16:10 display but 4K quality. However, its weight is almost twice as much, although the screen is smaller, and the battery life is noticeably worse.
  • Apple MacBook Pro 16 is more stylish, offers us noticeably higher quality display and sound. But, its price is much higher, when it is also inferior in battery life.
  • Dell XPS 17 with much more powerful components, which will have to pay significantly more. And again, its battery life doesn't match the Gram 16.
  • Yes, the XPS 15/17 as well as the MacBook Pro 16 outperformGram 16 in performance, thanks to a more powerful 45W processor and discrete graphics card. If speed is more important to you than weight and autonomy, you should take a closer look at Apple or Dell models.

    Total

The LG Gram 16 is a laptop so light thatit’s impossible to believe how such a large display and a self-contained battery can fit here. But, its keyboard may seem uncomfortable to some to you, and for better performance you will have to turn on the appropriate and noisy mode. But you won't have to charge the device for several days, and you will hardly feel the laptop in your bag.

Yes, the body seems flimsy ifpress, it flexes a lot, but this is necessary for weight loss. On the other hand, the laptop has MIL-STD-810G protection, so I think you shouldn't worry about its safety if used correctly.

    Should I buy?

Overall, LG's Gram 16 is suitable for performingany daily tasks, while no other model can compare with battery autonomy. This is an excellent laptop if you don't care about top performance in this price segment.
