Qualcomm at the New Year conferenceThe Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019, which began on December 3, announced several developments at once, the implementation of which on real devices will take place in the first months of 2020. The most anticipated innovation was the new flagship SoC platform Snapdragon 865, which is the logical development of the 8th series and replaces the well-proven Snapdragon 855 in the 20-19 and the overclocked version of the Snapdragon 855+.
During the pre-presentation platformIt was presented in general terms, without technical details, which will be announced a little later. It is known that the most advanced 7-nm technology will be used to produce the new Snapdragon 865 and the release of processors will begin on the TSMC production lines.
Despite the fact that Qualcomm developersSnapdragon 865 is positioned as a processor necessary for the development of fifth-generation networks; the platform itself lacks an integrated 5G modem. To work with the new generation of communication, the second generation of the 5G Snapdragon X55 modem will be used, which will be paired with the new Snapdragon 865.
Snapdragon X55 modem works in the range of less6 GHz (Sub-6 GHz) and supports millimeter waves (mmWave). In addition, the X55 can use all the previous communication standards 2G GSM, CDMA, 3G WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA and 4G LTE. In this case, the modem can provide a maximum data transfer speed of up to 7 Gb / s (4.5 Gb / s with Snapdragon X50). In standard mode, reception and transmission is carried out at a speed of 3 Gbit / s. In the outgoing direction, 4G LTE Category 22 (up to 2.5 Gbit / s) is supported.
Among the main advantages of the SoC Snapdragon 865Qualcomm developers highlight the fifth generation of the AI Engine, which is responsible for accelerating the processing of artificial intelligence tasks. The data processing speed has been increased to 15 trillion operations per second (15 TOPS), which provides a 2-fold increase in productivity compared to the previous processor. The performance of some applications, such as photo processing or real-time translations, will grow 3 times, due to the use of a new neural engine.
Qualcomm Engineering AchievementsSnapdragon 865 uses an image processing processor (ISP) at a speed of 2 gigapixels per second (the most powerful in the world), which will allow mobile cameras to create photographs of a qualitatively higher level than before.
Using the processor, it will be possible to record videoin 8K format (30 frames / sec), and for 4K mode, it became possible to present each frame in a resolution of 64 megapixels. One of the advantages of ISP will be the ability to support sensors with a resolution of up to 200 megapixels, which, together with AI technologies, will create unique photos.
The new Snapdragon 865, as well as the Snapdragon 855, uses Elite Gaming gaming technology, which is being introduced in an improved version.
