Operator news: 3 main changes in the Beeline network

In 2018, after another check of communication quality, Roskomnadzor released a study according to which

Beeline operator turned out to be the slowest mobile Internet in Moscow.

It's funny, although it is unlikely that these events are connected, but inIt was in 2018 that Beeline announced that it was starting a powerful network upgrade - the implementation of the Supercity project, the purpose of which was to modernize the network with an eye to 5G-Ready.

The result was a curious case, as in 4 yearsbeeline, thanks to active development, has become the best mobile operator of the Big Four, which is confirmed by the results of research by several analytical agencies.

What is the idea behind the upgrade?

For the past 3 years, the operator has continuously reported onmodernization of the core network, the number of new base stations (BS) and the amount of investment. Investments, by the way, were really impressive and exceeded the expenses of other operators. So, in 2020 alone, the operator invested more than 15.5 billion rubles. And in 2021 - 12 billion rubles.

Behind the network upgrade was the idea of "seamless", orcommunication continuity, that is, the subscriber, as conceived by the operator, should receive a comfortable network level (comfort was determined by the ability to listen to music, watch video) regardless of location - even in the metro, even on the M11 highway, even on the roof of Moscow City skyscrapers.

To implement the idea of seamlessness, beeline aggressivelybuilt base stations (1000 new stations were installed in the Moscow metro alone, and another 10 thousand BS in 2020, 7000 BS in 2021), carried out frequency aggregation and refarming, which made it possible to increase speed and increase network capacity, and also launched VoLTE first, then Vo WiFi. It's time to evaluate the changes in three key areas: communications in the region and on highways, in the city and in the subway.

Region and track

Back in the spring of last year, Beeline announced that it was going to concentrate on improving the quality of communication in the Moscow region, increasing the number of base stations by 30% in 2021 alone.

Perhaps the most pleasant news for motorists: you can drive along the six main routes without fear of being left without a connection.

If in general the level of LTE coverage on the routes M1, M5, M9, M10, M11 and A130 is 95%, then in the Beeline network the continuity of coverage reaches almost 100%.

The news about the M11 highway connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg is most encouraging. If in 2019, in principle, there was no mobile connection on 30% of the road, now the beeline coverage reaches 99%.

Such results are encouraging. After all, every motorist knows that on the highway, not so much the speed of the mobile network is important as stability. By the way, there are no problems with speed either. Measurements show that you can comfortably watch 4K video on the go.

As noted in the study, the main profileswork with a smartphone on the go includes downloading content, watching video hosting and chatting in instant messengers. So, to view UHD content, you need a speed of 15-18 Mbps. For example, the average speed in the Beeline network on the routes is 44.9 Mbps.

Underground

At the end of 2021, studies of the quality of coverage in the subways of Moscow and St. Petersburg were published.

The tests used the methodology developedMinistry of Communications, when measurements are carried out not only at the station, but also throughout the trains, that is, in the tunnels. Several parameters were evaluated: the availability of the network as a whole, the average data transfer rate, and ping.

The result was unexpected: the beeline took first place in terms of quality both in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

So, for Beeline subscribers, the average download speed isin the St. Petersburg metro was 42 Mbps (for comparison, MTS - 39 Mbps, MegaFon - 26 Mbps, Tele2 - 20 Mbps). Beeline also took first place in terms of network accessibility.

The transformation of the metro in St. Petersburg otherwisethe press did not call it a revolution. And there is a reasonable reason for that. For an extremely long time, the mobile network in St. Petersburg was, at the very least, present only on platforms. And when traveling by train, smartphones often failed to connect to the network during a stop on the platform. Accordingly, the current picture, when you can comfortably watch 4K video and talk on VoLTE during the trip, is perceived as a miracle. Beeline installed 5G-Ready equipment in the tunnels and used an active distributed antenna system (ADAS) instead of a radiating cable.

In the Moscow Metro, the results were no worse. Beeline took first place in terms of mobile Internet speed both at stations and in tunnels (60 Mbps in the tunnel and 113 Mbps at the stations).

In its study, the analytical agency Telecom Daily summed up:

In two years, the operator made a breakthrough and finished buildingto first place in key speed characteristics. At the same time, it is also the first in terms of stability - this allows us to conclude that at the moment it is the fastest network in the tunnels of the Moscow metro.

City

At the end of May, the DMTEL research agency released a traditional study of the quality of communication in Moscow, naming Beeline the best mobile operator in Moscow for the second year in a row.

It should be noted here that in Moscow, as on the mainIn the Russian market, traditionally all operators demonstrate excellent communication quality. So, for example, the share of call interruptions does not exceed 0.5%, and a telephone connection is established in less than 4 seconds (it is only noted that “Tele2 is noticeably inferior to competitors in terms of connection establishment time: 10% of registered values are above 9.61 seconds”).

Beeline was able to get ahead of competitors in terms of data transfer speed to the Internet (uplink), and also showed the same download speeds from the network as MTS.

Beeline shows the best results andoccupies the first position in the ranking of mobile communication quality assessments in Moscow. Beeline maintains its leading position with a noticeable reduction in the distance relative to MTS both in terms of the quality of telephone communication and the quality of data transmission, compared with the results of the study in the fall of 2021.

One of the positive moments is the launch of VoWiFi beeline technology. Initially, the network operated in pilot mode, but this spring the operator made the service available to everyone.

Voice Over Wi-Fi, or VoWiFi, or voice transmissionover Wi-Fi is one of the best technologies for smartphones. As you might guess from the name, the idea is that it uses not a mobile network for communication, but a Wi-Fi connection.

This is the best solution for situations wherethe smartphone is in a zone of poor network reception or even outside the coverage area. That is, for example, if there is no mobile network in the far corner of the apartment, in the underground parking or in the country house, but there is Wi-Fi, then you can make and receive calls.

Source DMTEL

By the way, the greatest interest in the DMTEL studyrepresent not the leaders, but the losers. So, about "MegaFon" it is said that "in terms of the quality of data transmission services, MegaFon is noticeably inferior to its competitors and is in fourth position." It is "a significant decrease in the single final score due to the lag in the quality of data services." Because of this, the operator took third place, although a few years ago he was ahead.

Conclusion

The history of the beeline is an excellent case, as forin a relatively short period of time, the mobile operator was able not only to completely correct the shortcomings of its own network, but also to come out on top among operators.

The current situation with the introduction of numerousno one could have foreseen the sanctions, but the idea to modernize the network was conceived extremely timely. Beeline has been active in recent years and continues to develop the network, since the equipment for this was purchased for the future, which is likely to help the operator maintain the palm in terms of communication quality in the coming years.

Finally, it should be noted that in the network of eachoperator, there are areas where poor quality may be present. And the best operator is the one that works well for you at work, at home and along the way.
