Non-original printer cartridge and health problems - be careful!

Hello.

It was worth touching on the topic of non-original cartridges and toners for printers, as it immediately unfolded

a controversy in which with a deafening, devastatingthose who are not ready to overpay for the original began to keep the account. Most of the comments boiled down to simple economic conclusions: the original often costs almost an order of magnitude more, which means that the choice is obvious. And the fact that a printer or MFP can break down due to a non-original cartridge does not play a big role, the main thing here is the price and what the print is used for, whether a riot of colors is needed or any option is suitable, even one where the black color is not very bright .

The survey showed that the majority of our readers use non-original cartridges or toner. That is understandable, based on the economy.

The survey can be found here

I'm interested in this comment:“Not on all, but on some issues I agree. We need to print a lot, we fill the cartridges ourselves and, firstly, a wild amount of either soot or dust comes out of the printer when printing. The wallpaper in the office turns black in a year. The heating drum or so is failing. True, after the resource there are 13 thousand pages and it seems like this is his normal resource. 5 years of work, but xs. It breaks at the wrong time."

Never used non-originalcartridges, found one for an HP printer on Yandex.Market, purchased it and started printing text. Visually, I did not see any difference with the original cartridge, the print is plus or minus the same. If you strongly convince yourself that there must be differences, perhaps you will find them. I photographed the pages, but I don’t even see the point in posting pictures, they are the same.

The only difference was that afternon-original cartridge, the page is covered with a layer of “dust”, the fingertips feel it well, as if you were stuck in talcum powder or something like that. There is nothing even close to the original cartridge.

While typing on the printer, the phone was torn fromnotifications. I took it in my hands and was stunned, I did not expect that the pollution sensor from the smart home kit would suddenly go crazy. He is standing two meters away, almost in the other corner of the room, and suddenly he has shown an increase in pollution.

I used a sensor from Aqara, we have a review of it, there was nothing else at hand, and it happened by accident. No measurements were taken.

Aqara TVOC Air Quality Monitor Review (AAQS-S01)

A small air quality monitor for a smart home - active substances, humidity, temperature. Smart home improvement sensor.

First thought - something went wrong, checkedsensor in another room, it worked fine. I brought it into the room with the printer, the situation repeated itself, both sensors showed plus or minus the same results. The situation returned to normal only after four hours!

The next day I decided to make an experiment andcheck what caused such pollution. The first sensor was left exactly in the same place, the second one was placed next to the printer. Inside is a non-original cartridge. And that's what happened.

When printing three pages of text, the TVOC sensor, which was closer to the printer, worked in a minute, the pollution level was 24 mg/m3 (the maximum level is 25 mg/m3, the sensor cannot measure more). The far sensor showed 0.05 mg/m3. Five minutes later, his readings changed to 22 mg/m3. The situation returned to normal after three hours - 0.07 mg/m3.

I have several air cleanersthey have a function to analyze particles and their size. I pulled such a cleaner to the printer, turned it on in automatic mode and printed ten pages of text. The result disappointed me a little.

That is, at the time of printing, the devil flew out of the printer, so the sensors on the air purifier went crazy. After a couple of minutes of work at the maximum power level, I had this result.

Visually, nothing was observed at the same time, no"dust" or other contaminants. There was no feeling that the printer was spitting out toner along with the printed pages. A typical air quality result from a purifier looks like this.

In a good way, you need to buy a separate analyzersuspended particles, to study this issue closely, to bring a technique under it. In my case, this is just a coincidence of random factors, I did not plan any in-depth research on this topic, I used the devices that were at hand. The air purifier, by the way, coped with pollution in thirty minutes.

Perhaps someone will dare to conduct an experiment, a comparisoncartridges from different companies (non-original) for contamination. But such manufacturers often do not have repeatability, the toner may differ in composition from batch to batch, so it’s impossible to say with certainty that such and such a cartridge is good, but this one is definitely bad.

Initially indicated in the text the brand of the cartridge, which he acquired, after mature reflection and because of the above, struck out his name. I am convinced that they are all inferior to the original to one degree or another. Printing with the original cartridge showed that neither the air purifier nor the TVOC sensors go crazy, they do not show pollution at all. From the curious - after changing the cartridge, I got an increase in the air pollution value during the first few pages, that is, the toner from the non-original cartridge still lived in the depths of the printer and got into the air during printing.

Research on the impact of printers on air pollution

The next logical step is to see whatThere are scientific studies on the impact of printers on air pollution. In 2007, a widely cited paper appeared and became the cornerstone for subsequent research. Lidia Morawska of the University of Queensland in Australia studied 62 laser printer models, including both well-known manufacturers and obscure companies. The study took place in a specially equipped room, where air pollution by toner particles was measured. It turned out that 27% of printers (17 models) pollute the air, and one printer was compared with the level of such pollution with smoking a cigarette indoors. Two printers showed moderate air pollution, and 37 printers showed no signs of pollution at all.

The study notes that pollutionaffects the wear of the printer and cartridge, these parameters also need to be taken into account. For us, the work is interesting because it shows an important point - even with original cartridges and native equipment, contamination is possible, the question is in its volume. Jobs can be found here.

Historically in laser printer toners"black carbon" is used. This component is considered potentially hazardous to humans and causes cancer (class 2B carcinogen). In the production where it is used, there are strict rules for the protection of personnel, in particular, people wear breathing masks. But in offices where there are printers, there is nothing like that, right?

At present, there are practically no studieswhich would prove the effect of the toner on people's health. The situation is anecdotal. Such animal studies prove the appearance of asthma, other diseases, and metabolic changes. But human clinical trials are not possible, hence the lack of evidence for the harm that printers can cause. For example, Dr. Morvaskaya suggested that the UN introduce a strict regulation on the number of microparticles that can appear in the office after the operation of a printer or other equipment, but for various reasons this was not done. In most countries of the world, the work of office equipment is not regulated in any way. There are no standards for protecting employees in offices, although large companies try to install such equipment in specially designated places, outside the area where people are located.

What can you do and what to think about to protect yourself

Genuine cartridges reduce the chancethe occurrence of such problems with air pollution (on my printer this is exactly the case, but I will not convince you of this). If I had written this text a year ago, I would have been accused of being on the side of greedy manufacturers who are trying to sell their original cartridges at exorbitant prices. It's good that today almost all of these companies have left the Russian market, they definitely have no interest in this, however, like me.

My deepest conviction is thateach person should be able to weigh all the risks, see all the pros and cons. The health effects of the same toner that is sprayed indoors cannot be assessed here and now, it is not a poisonous substance that acts immediately. It can manifest itself in five, ten years or even more. I have no doubts that such substances are harmful, but I will not convince you of this.

To minimize the influence of non-originalcartridges and toners, if possible, you need to take out printers and MFPs outside the premises where people are constantly located. If you can’t do this, then put an air purifier nearby that will “intercept” this pollution. Be smart about what you do, think about how to reduce the impact of printing technology on your health. Even if you do not believe that such an influence exists, it is better to play it safe.

From an unexpected experiment, which in no way by mewas not planned, he made a new judgment for himself: you need to be more careful with office equipment. It has become so firmly established in our lives that it seems safe by default. And this, I think, is not so, and the question here is not the lifespan of your printer with a non-original cartridge, but how you will feel after a while.

Жить вредно, в этом нет сомнений.But reducing your years where it can be avoided is not a very winning strategy. I do not intend to intimidate you, but I would like you to think about the impact of such a technique and perhaps take steps to reduce it to a minimum.
