Depending on the type of cancerdiseases, patients will receive this or that type of treatment. But despite this, after all medical procedures, all people who have had cancer have a fairly high chance of recurrence of this dangerous process. And the development of scientists from the United States can increase the chances of these people for a long and happy life. They managed to create a spray-gel that stimulates the immune system and significantly reduces the risk of recurrence.
A group of scientists led by Professor Zhen Gu ofUniversity of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) has developed a biodegradable substance with an immunostimulating effect. The experts tested it in the form of a spray on laboratory animals, which were surgically removed melanomas. It turned out that in mice, the gel reduced the growth of tumor cells remaining after surgery, which helped prevent the recurrence of cancer. After receiving treatment, 50% of the mice lived 60 days without re-occurrence of tumors compared with the control group.
It also turned out that the substance is inhibiteddevelopment of oncological formations not only in the place from which they were removed, but throughout the body. The fact is that the preparation contains nanoparticles for blocking the CD47 protein, by means of which the tumor blocks the work of macrophages and prevents the immune system from working effectively. Nanoparticles are based on calcium carbonate. Researchers chose him because it can gradually dissolve in the field of surgical wounds, leaving no traces.
“Our gel promises to be a very good way to fight cancer. We also learned that the gel can activate T-cells in the immune system, destroying cancer cells, ”the authors said.
Scientists will continue to test the drug onanimals to find out the optimal dose, the best combination of nanoparticles and the ideal frequency of use. After that, it will be possible to begin experiments with the participation of people.
