New flagships Phantom X2 Pro 5G and Phantom X2: there is something to surprise

Hi all,

Today we have an unusual material. TECNO was given the opportunity to sneak a peek at the new

flagship smartphone Phantom X2 Pro 5G. And there is something to be surprised about, from a retractable lens to a battery consumption of only 1% per night.

Over the past year, TECNO has significantly strengthenedposition in the Russian market. If at the beginning of the year the company's share did not exceed 4%, now, according to Canalys, TECNO firmly holds 20%, ranking third in the market. And according to Marvel Distribution, in the 3rd quarter of 2022, TECNO's share in the Russian Federation reached 11% in units and 6% in money, which was the highest figure in its history in the country.

Steady growth served as an impetus that promptedcompany to believe that the Russian market is ready for flagship smartphones under the TECNO brand. So Russia was chosen as one of the countries of the first wave to launch a new smartphone from the Phantom premium line.

The start of sales, as well as prices, is still unknown, butTECNO representatives gave a day to get to know the Phantom X2 Pro 5G live. A detailed review, of course, cannot be done in such a short time. So for now, let's share our first impressions.

What is Phantom?

Phantom is TECNO's new flagship series. The Phantom X2 line is now available in two models: the advanced Phantom X2 Pro 5G with a focus on camera and performance, and the Phantom X2 with a focus on performance and design.

So, in Phantom X2 Pro 5G, the company not onlycombined premium design and powerful hardware, but also added unique features that usually distinguish a flagship smartphone from just a good device.

The Phantom X2 Pro 5G has such a unique feature, orThe highlight was the retractable portrait lens, the quality of photos from which, as planned, should compete with professional cameras. Let's take some pictures and check it out!

Looking ahead, it must be said that bravado is aboutcamera is not unreasonable. TECNO has a large laboratory for 200 people who are exclusively engaged in research work in the field of mobile photography.

In addition to the camera, the smartphone attracts attentionset of iron. Firstly, here is the latest 4nm chipset from MediaTek, the presentation of which took place just the other day. Secondly, operational LPDDR5X with UFS3.1 drive. Let's run PUBG in 4K ultra frame rate and check it out!

Of course, both the design and the screen did not let us down.Everything about the screen is clear: a huge 120 Hz AMOLED display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. It is difficult to surprise with a good screen today. But the smartphone looks really non-standard!

The coolest will be the orange version, made byfrom some unusual material based on recycled plastic. Unfortunately, this cannot be assessed. They sent me a dark gray design called "stardust".

NOTE: An engineering sample was sent for acquaintance. This means that this is not the final version of the software, the packaging may also be different, and the smartphone is not new (engineers worked with it).

Packaging and design

Let's start with the design, as the smartphone looks unusual. From a few meters you can guess that this is the Phantom X2 Pro 5G.

The smartphone comes in a large flat box with a silk ribbon on the side for easy opening.

The box is matte with glossy embossing. My version was already slightly overwritten.

There is no point in talking about the kit yet, since it has not yet been approved.

I opened it and couldn't believe my eyes. I even looked sideways. Indeed, everything is so: huge camera lenses!

Perhaps, it is immediately pleasing that the same huge lenses are visible in the lenses inside, that is, this is not marketing from the category “let's make a big lens to make it cool”, but everything is grown-up!

On the back panel, made of tactileunusual rough material (it is obvious that this is some kind of tricky plastic), the brand name is applied. It's strange that they called the color "star dust", where are the stars?

Due to the camera block, the smartphone seems more massive than it really is. The device weighs approximately 215 grams.

Thanks to the rounded edges of the body and screen, the Phantom X2 Pro 5G feels very good in the hand.

I wanted to take a picture of a smartphone in the light andfinally understood why "stardust". In the sun, the smartphone began to play, but not with cheap glossy tints, which have already set the teeth on edge, but really with star dust. It can also be compared to diamond chips.

Case

This rarely happens, but I decided to highlight the cover in a separate item. There is also something to see here!

In the niche under the smartphone (in which at first I thought there was nothing) there were documents, a SIM card clip and a case. No, not like that, not a cover, but a CASE! Unusual design, texture, fastening to the body.

Yes, and you guessed it right, the metal frame can fold back. It can be used as a stand.

Camera and screen

The main camera is a system of three lenses:

  • 50 MP, 1/1.3-inch sensor size, 1.2 micron large pixels
  • Portrait retractable module 50 MP, 1.28 micron pixels, 65 mm, aperture f1.49
  • 13 MP ultra wide

Estimate, by the way, the size of the sensor and pixels. In this metric, the Phantom X2 Pro 5G outperforms many smartphones that brag about having a 108MP or even 200MP camera. Still, the main thing is not the number of megapixels, but how much light the matrix can capture.

The first thing, of course, is not about the capabilities of the camera, but about a curiosity - a traveling module!

When zooming in on the portrait module, a 2.5x zoom occurs, which creates the effect of a 65mm lens. By the way, in normal mode, 2.5x can simply be used as an optical zoom.

Lens retracted, shooting 1x

65mm mode for super portraits.

For once in Moscow it was a sunny day,so I went to test at VDNKh. Again, let me remind you that the software is not final. Although, in my opinion, it already looks very solid. At the same time, no additional settings were required, everything was filmed according to the “point and click” principle.

To take a picture, I put my smartphone on a mini tripod andused the timer function. Here, of course, it is important to say that high-quality shooting is not only about large lenses. Processing algorithms are also important, as well as the correct high-power hardware.

Phantom X2 Pro 5G powered by MediaTek chipsetDimensity 9000, which has an ISP (Dedicated Image Processor) capable of processing 9 gigapixels per second and supporting 18-bit HDR processing. By comparison, advanced DSLR cameras can only handle 14-bit.

MediaTek in Dimensity 9000 chipset revisedapproach to photography, moving away from the usual canons, actively introducing all the possibilities of artificial intelligence. And it's not about the notorious beautification effect, but about the exact white balance, about shooting with zero delay when scenes are detected, precise automatic exposure and autofocus. Thanks to this, in the same portrait photo above, the smartphone did not make mistakes, making an excellent compositional shot, directing which objects are in focus, where the blur is, setting the white balance adjusted for the slanting sun, etc.

However, a portrait camera can be used for more than just taking pictures of yourself. For example, a chic portrait of a chameleon turned out in the Botanical Garden.

Unfortunately, then the reptile crawled to the other side of the terrarium, where the light is worse and the glass is very dirty. But it's also a portrait lens!

The 65mm lens is generally versatile and allows you to find "portraits" even where there are none.

On the screen of a smartphone, the photos look, of course, great. When you open files on computers, the wow effect is lost.

Let's see what the final software will be, but for nowthat the smartphone camera looks promising, inspiring to take pictures and look for angles. And here we are talking about both the main modules and the “ultra wide-angle” 13 MP. Look at the photos below:

A 32 MP module is responsible for the selfie camera.Unfortunately, I did not have time to get to know its capabilities well, but, perhaps, I would like to note the second portrait made in the metro. The photo was taken on the move, so even against a blurry background you can see a blurry bas-relief. Notice, however, that the face is completely in focus and the portrait blur is perfect. Even half of the ear was not cut off because of the headphones, which are similar in color to the background. Although even many expensive smartphones suffer from this.

Potentially, the smartphone has enormous capabilities: a powerful combination of a chipset and photomodules gives good prospects.

Photos look good on the monitor, but onsmartphone screen, they certainly look even better. The Phantom X2 Pro 5G has a very good 120Hz AMOLED panel protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Obviously, there is a wide DCI-P3 color gamut and support for HDR10.

Well, we will find out the details after the main announcement of the smartphone.

Of course, Always-on display.

Performance and Nutrition

Responsible for performance MediaTek Dimensity9000 made in 4nm process technology. This is a flagship-level chipset where MediaTek's goal was to make sure that high performance doesn't mean scalding hot temperatures.

Together with the chipset, 12 GB are installed in the smartphoneLPDDR5X RAM with UFS3.1 and a 256 GB drive, from which, by the way, you can allocate up to 5 GB of virtual RAM. Thus, the total amount of RAM in the smartphone is 17 GB. Not every laptop has the amount of memory that modern smartphones have.

Given the lack of the final version of the software,Of course, it is impossible to publish the results of synthetic tests. But in terms of performance, Dimensity 9000 is a competitor to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, bypassing Qualcomm's creation in terms of energy efficiency (as they said at the MediaTek presentation, and this was confirmed by Phantom X2 Pro 5G, so in terms of performance in AnTuTu it will be somewhere around a million points) .

In the absence of tests, I downloaded PUBG Mobile. And this is the case when you do not deny yourself anything. You set the settings not even “High”, but “Ultra”, this is when 4K textures are loaded and you also set the frame rate to “Ultra”. And the smartphone absolutely does not mind. At the same time, the device remains cold even after long gaming sessions.

About the battery

Of course, during the time that the smartphone was in my hands, it was difficult to understand something about the battery life.

Perhaps two things can be noted.

Firstly, during the night the smartphone was discharged by only2% (with Always-On display off). As I understand it, this is one of the highlights of the Dimensity 9000, which, in the form of a marketing slogan, says that the charge will decrease by only 1% overnight.

Secondly, for the whole day the smartphone was discharged by 60%, although it was subjected to severe tests. The battery has a standard capacity of 5160 mAh, so all credit can be attributed to the new chipset.

Included is a 45 W adapter with Chineseplug, so I armed myself with a complete cable, but took my 65 W adapter, with which the smartphone took about 40 minutes to charge from 20 to 100%.

Conclusion

Without any discounts, TECNO Phantom X2 Pro 5G will becomeone of the most interesting smartphones of 2023. And, perhaps, I will not even dissemble, saying that 2023 as a whole will be the year of Chinese brands. Not only in Russia, but all over the world. There will be big changes in the market, and the current leader, or even leaders, will come under pressure as buyers try new companies' products.

Often newcomers to the flagship marketsought to release a product that can be described by the phrase "technology for the sake of technology and marketing." That is, such a smartphone is designed to look good on paper and in advertising, but not in real life.

TECNO Phantom X2 Pro 5G is an example of a proper flagship smartphone, where innovation is not out of touch with reality, but will be used on a daily basis.

Of course, I would like to get a smartphone ona full test to walk around with him for a couple of weeks. It will be interesting to shoot more photos and videos in 4K 60 fps on the camera. Of course, it is curious how many synthetic parrots the Phantom X2 Pro 5G will knock out on the final firmware version. However, most of all in the smartphone, the battery life was hooked, or rather, how reluctantly TECNO Phantom X2 Pro 5G spends a charge. At the same time, there were no typical antics that notifications and so on did not come. Previously, only Apple smartphones could boast of this.
