NASA's rover airless tire technology is used in bicycles for earthlings (2 photos)

SMART Tire Company partners with NASAdevelops the first-ever domestic application of shape memory alloy (SMA) airless tire technology. A similar technology was used by engineers from the US Space Agency to develop tires for rovers.

New bicycle tires called METL steelthe result of a partnership program between NASA's John Glenn Research Center and California-based startup SMART. The design of new tires does not require inflation before use, as they are constructed from interlocking springs. The surface of METL tires is puncture-resistant and provides traction to the ground similar to that of standard bicycle wheels.

Earl Cole is the founder of SMART.(winner of the show "Survivor. Fiji") and engineer Brian Jenny. The novelty will be introduced to the consumer market at the beginning of 2022 and, as conceived by the founders, will be in demand for other vehicles, including cars.

There are currently no exact technical specifications.the parameters of future airless tires that are immune to punctures, and the price of the product is unknown. However, the organizers of the project claim that there are great prospects for the technology significantly increasing the durability of wheels and reducing the load on the environment due to the absence of the need to recycle old tires.

To date, SMART has already signed a contract for the use of METL airless tires by Ford Spin, an electric vehicle rental company.
