Museum of Antiquity: What can you find at the bottom of Lake Titicaca?

Throughout the history of mankind, on our planetlived a huge variety of different civilizations. Representatives of each of them had their own vision of the origin of the Earth and life. For example, the Scandinavian pagans believed that everything that surrounds them is made from parts of the body of a mythical giant: earth from its meat, mountains from bones, plants from hair, and so on. The first man and woman, according to Scandinavian mythology, were created from trees. And according to ancient Incaswho inhabited the territory of the present SouthAmerica, their progenitors were two people who were born on the island of the sun. It is located on Lake Titicaca, which was considered a sacred place and was used to make sacrifices to the gods. At the moment, the objects lying on its bottom tell scientists many interesting details about the life of representatives of the ancient civilization. For example, there are many chests with very interesting things hidden inside.

Such items can be found at the bottom of Lake Titicaca. But what is it?

Inca empire- the largest Indian state in South America XI-XVI centuries. It was located in what is now Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

The ancient city of the Incas

About the secrets that are hidden in the depths of the lakeTiticaca, was reported in Science Alert. The Inca Empire existed from the 11th to the 16th century, and during this time it was represented and left behind many traces. For example, on the territory of the South American country of Peru, there are the ruins of the mysterious city of Machu Picchu, which for inexplicable reasons was abandoned by the inhabitants. Today it is very difficult to get to, because it was built at an altitude of 2540 meters, which is why it was even given the name "city among the clouds". There are still structures on the hill that were built several hundred years ago. It is believed that the Incas did not know writing and did not know how to extract iron. Nevertheless, they still managed to build solid structures that retain their shape to this day.

What does Lake Titicaca hide?

So Lake Titicaca was used forsacrifices. Scientists have found many different objects at its bottom for many years in a row and compile huge catalogs from the finds. So, on the territory of the sacred lake, they managed to find many animal bones, gold medallions, jewelry and the very stone boxes that I mentioned above. As a rule, these items were found on underwater reef Khoa. In total, 28 boxes were found there, inside which were hidden small figurines and ornaments made of gold, silver and shells. Modern descendants of the Incas believe that their ancestors also poured the blood of animals and people into boxes, but due to poor tightness, they dissolved in water.

It was believed that the Incas made sacrifices only on the territory of the Khoa reef. However, sacrificial objects were also found on the territory of the reef.

Underwater reef Is the rise of the seabed in shallow water. It is formed as a result of coral overgrowth, or when a rocky bottom breaks down.

Scientists have long believed that ritualssacrifices took place only near the Khoa reef. However, recently a box with gifts for the gods was found on the K'akaya reef, which is located in a completely different place. There is no doubt that the box was used specifically for the rite of sacrifice. First, the box has the same appearance as those found on the Khoa reef. Secondly, it is made of the same volcanic rock. Thirdly, “gifts” for the gods were hidden inside it. According to scientists, the gift box was submerged about 500 years ago.

Ancient Inca artifacts

As a gift to the gods, the ancient Incasput in a stone box a figurine in the shape of a llama, which is made of a thorny mollusk of the species Spondylus. Also inside the box was a folded sheet of gold - most likely part of a precious bracelet. Perhaps there were other decorations and even animal blood inside the box, but they were washed off with water. Still, the Incas did not know how to make sealed containers and their products were made rather crudely.

Inca gods

Lake Titicaca is located at an altitude of 3800 metersand is considered the highest mountain body of water. It is not known to which gods the ancient Incas sacrificed. Based on the fact that the lake is located in a mountainous area, scientists suggest that the gifts were intended deity Apu... It is he, according to the mythology of the Incas, who is the spirit of the mountains and the protectors of the inhabitants of the highlands. However, sacrifices could also have been performed in honor of such gods as:

  • Viracocha, who was considered the creator of the world. Namely, if you believe the stories, together with his wife Mama-Kocha gave birth to a son Inti (sun) and a daughter Mama Kilia (moon);
  • Pacha Camacwho is considered the creator of the first men and women;
  • Pachamama, which was considered the main female deity. In short, she is the goddess of the earth and fertility.

The history of the ancient Incas is constantly being studied andevery time scientists learn something new. They had known for a long time that the warriors of this civilization were notable for their rigidity, they cut off the heads of enemies and mutilated them in every possible way. I wrote about why they did this in this article. Enjoy reading!
