Taiwanese manufacturer MSI is known forGaming laptops with powerful components and an aggressive design. But, with the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC, the company decided to cater to a more demanding audience of professionals who need a powerful filling and absolutely do not need a bright flashy design.

Unlike most gaming laptops fromMSI, PS63 8RC Modern was created as a device for working with media content. The target audience is video and music editors, photographers, web designers, 3D animators and everyone else who uses a computer as their main working tool. The company found that in most cases, people take a laptop with them to the office, so outwardly it should not be too bright and fit the corporate environment.

Design and appearance

Case MSI PS63 8RC - dark metalcolors with a thin gray-blue frame on the top cover. The lid itself is rounded off at all angles and made of aluminum, like the rest of the case. There is also a bit of plastic in the design - in particular, a block with information about the manufacturer on the back surface is made of it. The easily recognizable MSI Dragon Army logo is neatly carved on the lid and externally, it is a couple of shades lighter than the rest of the PS63 material.

The use of metal in the assembly of the PS63 8RC Moderngives reliability, when working, you immediately feel belonging to the premium class. The laptop itself can be attributed rather to the heavy weight category - its mass is 1.6 kg, but at the same time from the side of the laptop it seems thin and elegant.

Given the orientation of the device to work, MSIreasonably foresaw the need for a large number of connectors. On the right side there are two USB Type-A 3.1 Gen1 and a microSD slot, on the left there is a charging connector, HDMI, USB Type-C 3.1 Gen2, USB 3.1 Type-A and 3.5 mm Combo Jack.

Opening the lid, you will see the backlita keyboard with wide distances between the keys and a large 14-cm touchpad, which is almost two times larger than most other models on the market.

It is also curious that MSI placed the buttonshutdown separately from the keyboard - above it, so there will be much less random shutdowns. As a rule, the shutdown button is located directly on the keyboard next to the Delete key, but here it is different. The MSI PS63 Modern 8RC has a fingerprint scanner.

Display and multimedia

One of the main pride of PS63 Modern8RC is a wide 15.6-inch matte display with a resolution of 1080p with extremely thin frames. The width of the frames is only 5.6 mm, due to which the ratio of the panel to the surface is gigantic 86%. The display is complemented by two stereo speakers radiating downward, located on the underside of the laptop approximately in the area of the palm position.

The panel is attached to special hinges thatallow you to tilt it back almost to the end - up to 140 degrees. The hinges installed in the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC are very reliable, the display does not wobble at all, even if you press the keys hard when printing.

In general, the assembly and design of the PS63 8RC meets its tasks at the maximum level, giving a calm, but stylish look that organically fits into any corporate setting.

Keyboard and trackpad

PS63 keyboard great for typingtext with large keys that are located at an appropriate distance. Buttons with backlight, they are quite viable in any lighting conditions due to the combination of colors. The key travel is also good, and fluctuates around the mark from 1.2 to 1.3 mm.

The trackpad on the PS63 Modern is excellent. MSI uses Microsoft Precision drivers here, the panel is exceptionally spacious and elongated. The physical buttons on the trackpad are smooth with a very nice click - this is one of the best trackpads I've tested.

In the upper left corner is a small scannerFingerprint authentication for Windows Hello. Although this is a weird placement compared to other laptops, the sensor is very good - with no missed or false positives.

Performance and Tests

The MSI PS63 line consists of several models,which differ only in characteristics, although they look exactly the same, including displays. The PS63 Modern 8RC has an 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8565U processor, 16 GB DDR4 RAM with the ability to add up to 32 GB DDR4, a 512 GB NVME PCIe SSD, as well as an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with Max-Q technology and 4 GB GDDR5 video memory.

Ultra-low processor Intelconsumption and mid-range NVIDIA graphics cards with Max-Q technology allow this laptop to keep a balance between power and endurance - as much as the small form factor and the inability to deliver larger coolers allow. Nevertheless, according to MSI, such a set will allow the PS63 to work on a single charge for up to 16 hours.

All MSI PS63 models come with the above.The 15.6-inch Full HD True Color display and 60 Hz refresh rate. There is 100% sRGB coverage, so the device is perfect for representatives of professions that require high color accuracy when working - web designers, video editors and so on ...

In tests, the MSI PS63 Modern 8RC proved its worthability to process content. In 3D Mark Time Spy, he scores 1600 points, and in PCMark, which checks the laptop's potential for working and creating digital content, Modern 8RC shows a result of 2800 points. During more thorough checks, like the PCMark Extended test, the PS63 8RC produced a very solid 4300 points. In the Cinebench R20, the laptop got a score of 1200, and in Unigine 2 with Extreme 1080p settings - only 950 points.

SPECviewperf 13 test that checksthe laptop’s ability to work in CAD programs showed that the PS63 8RC was able to start at a resolution of 1900 × 1600, and in the more popular 3DSMax and Maya equipment showed decent results at 50 and 57 points.

Software

Following the tradition of installing on laptopsproprietary software, MSI installed the Creator Center application on the PS63, which gives you control over a huge selection of settings, including power consumption, brightness, performance, DPI. There are also special modes for professional applications like the standard suite from Adobe or VEGAS Pro - of course, if they are installed.

This is a small but very useful addition,which is useful for the most flexible adjustment of work programs, although it will work only with a predefined list of applications, so it will not work to configure any desired program.

Creator Center also provides usthe ability to change general system parameters - you can fine-tune DPI, True Color mode and Nahimic stereo speakers for music, games, communication or movies. It is possible to set each option in accordance with one of four general modes - High performance, Balanced, Quiet and Super-economical.

Laptop in games and work

MSI PS63 Modern 8RC lets you playBorderlands 2 in 1080p resolution without lowering the frame rate, however, more demanding new items will have to be launched with medium or even low settings. Under heavy loads like games or video editing, the PS63 may heat up at the bottom of the keyboard, so lap work can be uncomfortable. However, coolers do not make noise, although they will be heard a little in a quiet room.

The matte display has rich colors andexcellent contrast, as well as accurate color reproduction. In daylight, the contents of the screen are clearly visible, as from all angles, although it is still preferable to work indoors. The speakers, unfortunately, leave much to be desired - the sound is illegible, and the position of the converters is not very successful, they will not be heard if you put the laptop on a soft surface.

In real life, the PS63 Modern 8RC is capable ofperform most standard tasks at a high level - such as word processing, basic video editing, working with high-quality images and not very heavy games in 1080p resolution. The generous amount of RAM and SSDs guarantee high read and write speeds. Tests at Crystal Disk Mark showed sequential read / write results of 1730 MB / s and 1450 MB / s, respectively.

Autonomy MSI PS63 8RC

The combination of the 8th generation energy-saving processor from Intel with ultra-low power consumption of the NVIDIA graphics card with Max-Q technology allows the PS63 8RC Modern to work without recharging for quite some time.

According to MSI, the battery can withstand up to 16hours, but, in reality, with average brightness, the maximum performance mode turned on and several hours of using a typical set of applications, the PS63 can withstand about 11 hours, which is still good. The included 19 V / 4.74 A charger recharges the battery from 0 to 100% in a few hours.

MSI PS63 Modern 8RC costs from 80 thousand rubles, and inIts price range is an excellent solution for those who need a laptop for professional purposes. PS63 Modern 8RC is not the most powerful model on the market, but it can be an excellent tool for solving almost all tasks.

Yes. The equipment copes with the processing of considerable amounts of data, having a good computing power. The laptop is suitable even for not heavy games, and has a surprisingly powerful battery.
