In addition to gaming laptops, extremely rareproductive 17-inch laptops. However, we really need the laptop to be light, comfortable, portable and powerful. The task is complex and often impossible. However, the LG Gram 17 was created to change the situation.
LG's Gram 17 is very different from others.laptops in its category. It is thin, compact and shocking light. But it costs about $ 1700 (110 thousand rubles). For this money, we get a quad-core processor, 16 GB of RAM and a huge 17-inch display with a resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels.
Is it worth the money? Or is it easier to purchase a compact 15-inch gaming laptop for the same amount? I tried to figure it out.

Design and appearance
From the name it becomes clear that the LG Gram 17extremely lightweight device. The laptop weighs only 1.34 kg, which is less than most 15-inch models, including the Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro. The laptop is almost not felt in the hands, when compared with the 17-inch competitors, the mass of which exceeds 2.5 kg.
This result was achieved due tospecial alloy, which is a combination of nanocarbon and magnesium. Gram 17 at the same time and it looks great - the body is metal, but light as plastic. You can easily throw a laptop into a backpack and quietly go to work in public transport - you will not even feel it. I have never experienced this before with any other ordinary 17-inch laptop.
But, this was not without compromise. Although LG claims that Gram 17 complies with the MIL-STD-810g standard, the body flexes in some places. This is especially noticeable with a strong press on the function keys of the keyboard. This also applies to the display lid, be careful with it.
Otherwise, all collected very high quality. The hinge securely holds the 17-inch screen, and the lid opens with even one hand (test on a MacBook). LG also managed to significantly reduce the total area of the laptop, due to the minimal side panels. As a result, the overall dimensions of the device correspond to the 15-inch models.
The LG Gram 17 got a 17-inch IPS display withresolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels. Although his image is not as clear as that of 4K screens, the picture is sharp, bright and has a wide range of colors. The test results showed that the panel covers 70% of the Adobe RGB gamut with an average contrast of 930 units. The color accuracy is excellent, estimated at 1.81, and the brightness reaches 395 nits.
If you translate these numbers into reality, then thisThe 17-inch display was an excellent option for leisure and productive work. You can even create content on it. You can open several windows and work comfortably even with small text, as well as clear images. Thanks to the glossy surface, the brightness is high, although there are highlights.
What is the best example of using Gram 17? In an office in bright light, it is enough to set the brightness to 50% in order not to notice your own reflection. In any colorful film or cartoon color will be juicy, as they should.
Ports and connectors
With one other 17 inch laptop younever get the sensations like with the LG Gram 17. It’s really convenient. But, it brought about changes. I had to abandon some connectors.
On the left side there are: USB-A port, HDMI and Thunderbolt 3 USB-C. On the right is another 2 × USB-A and a slot for microSD-cards. The laptop supports Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11 A / C (2X2). As you can see, if necessary, you can connect up to two displays and even an external video card to improve performance.
Keyboard and touchpad
Laptops like the XPS 15 and HP Envy 17different spacious and comfortable keyboards, however, the Gran17 has some problems. There is a rather strange location of the touchpad - it is located in the center, and not shifted to the left, like most notebooks. This means that the G and H keys will also be offset from the touch panel.
When typing, I advise you either to disable the touchpad,or keep your hands away from the touch surface. The touchpad keys seem to be too soft, their stroke is shallow (1.2 mm), however, there is a pleasant feedback when entering. It was convenient for me to type this text, and almost immediately I began to do it blindly.
For the convenience of working in the dark, the keyboard has two backlight levels. This is still not enough for me and it would be nice to have another level of brightness in stock.
The size of the LG Gram 17 touchpad is about the same asmost 15-inch laptops. There is support for Precision drivers from Microsoft. Clicks sound loud, and when pressed, the panel is deeply embedded in the case. The touch and smooth surface makes it easy to control the interface elements or drag them. Subjectively, my comment is that the touchpad for a 17-inch laptop could do more.
It should be noted that there is a built inkeyboard fingerprint scanner for Windows Hello. It is located directly above the digital unit, in the power button. Therefore, you can easily and quickly log into the system without thinking about passwords. It works in 99%. Unfortunately, there is no infrared camera for Windows Hello. LG has just installed a simple HD camera.
New laptops receive processors series IntelWhiskey Lake and demonstrate high performance, energy efficiency. The LG Gram 17 is no different here - it received a quad-core Core i7-8565U and 16 GB of RAM. Most of the tests were passed with high rates.
In the single-core Geekbench 4, I got 5026 points, and in the multi-core - 13,952. The LG laptop was faster than the 15-inch MacBook Pro with the Core i7-6820 and the XPS 15 with the Core i7-8750H. But, slightly conceded Asus ZenBook 15 on the same processor.
In more complex tests, it was noticeable thatperformance is limited by slower SATA SSD, which is why Gram 17 lags behind ZenBook 15 and XPS 15 in the Handbrake encoding test. I was disappointed with the result in the Crystal Disk Mark, where the speed of writing / reading was checked. In general, at such a high cost, I wonder why LG did not install PCIe here.
However, this performance will be enoughmost users. There were no brakes or lags in Google Chrome, although I opened more than 20 tabs at the same time. When connecting a 4K monitor, everything looked clear. Maybe the SSD is not fast enough, however, there is plenty of system performance for multimedia, browser and office work.
Most 15-inch laptops that I tookfor comparison with the LG Gram 17, most have a discrete graphics card. This laptop has only Intel UHD 620, so you definitely can not play serious names. The maximum that can be run without lags - india games. As the 3DMark test shows, the Gram 17 doesn't even come close to 15-inch notebooks with discrete graphics cards.
I started the Rocket League at 1080p and got no more than 29 fps. At the same time it was quite unpleasant to play. For games, I would prefer a laptop at the same price, with a 15-inch screen and at least a GTX 1060.
Autonomy LG Gram 17
The battery of a regular laptop lasts a maximum of 9-10 hours of work on the Internet. But, a 4-cell 72-watt lithium-ion battery is installed here, which means the autonomy should be higher.
LG claims that Gram 17 will work to 19.5hours away from the outlet. I tested the battery during looped video playback in 1080p, and my laptop worked for about 15.5 hours. This is clearly not enough for LG’s promises, but impressive.
In the standard test with Wi-Fi enabled, maximum display brightness and looped 1080p video, it turned out about 5 hours. In the iMacro test, the big LG laptop showed about 12 hours.
The LG Gram 17 is the easiest, most compact andA standalone 17-inch business notebook I've ever seen. It is ideal for business people and those who can not always connect an additional monitor when multitasking.
Of the minuses, I note in some places the bending coverscreen, lack of discrete graphics and slow SATA SSD. Thanks to the 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM and Thunderbolt 3 support, it will withstand the test of changing technology for at least 3 years. But, the price of $ 1700 (110 thousand rubles) I consider overpriced.
Should I buy?
Not. If you like the idea of a 17-inch screen, Gram 17 may be a good choice. For most, this is too expensive a device, without a dedicated GPU, fast data storage and reliable build quality.
- Lightweight design.
- Thunderbolt 3 support.
- Effective performance.
- Great battery life.
- Slow SATA 3 SSD.
- It does not feel strong enough.
- No dedicated graphics processor.
