Gamers looking for a gaming heavy duty laptop2019, have a huge selection. But they must be prepared for big expenses. Only for a lot of money you can get more power thanks to the integrated Nvidia RTX 20 video cards. I have a Lenovo Legion Y740 on my test.

A 17-inch Legion Y740 visited my desk. The notebook has one of the top configurations: Intel Core i7-8750H processor, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q graphics, 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD PCIe NVMe paired with a 1 TB hard drive. But such a working machine costs 150 thousand rubles.

I compared this laptop with other top models in the class.

    Design and construction

When I just unpacked the Lenovo Legion Y740,I was asked: Is this a gaming laptop? At the same time, a colleague was simultaneously surprised by this laptop. Although the Legion Y740 is quite heavy and large, it is not as attractive as the models from Predator or Alienware.

There is nothing special in the design here. The device looks quite simple with a square form factor. To me, the Y740 looks more like a ThinkPad model. Nevertheless, the Lenovo Y740 turned out to be a large laptop, it does not fit in my backpack. The thickness of such a device is almost 2.2 cm, and the device weighs about 2.9 kg.

Even the ROG Zephyrus S was smaller and lighter. But, there is an obvious plus. Lenovo's Legion Y740 may be harder, but it is also stronger. The lid does not flex, the keyboard does not give in even under strong pressure.

On the cover there is a Lenovo Legion logo withcustomizable backlight. The frame around the screen has become even smaller, the model is almost the size of the 15-inch counterparts. Today, laptops like Blade are very popular, with minimal frames, so it is not surprising that top manufacturers also try to implement this. Honestly, the screen with thin frames in games makes a greater impression.

    Ports and connectors

The most important ports are located on the back edge of the Lenovo Legion Y740, behind the hinge: Ethernet, mini DisplayPort, HSMI 2.0, 2 × USB-A. On the right side there is another USB-A port, and on the left is the Thunderbolt 3.

Since the power connector and HDMI are onthe back panel, then access to them as convenient as possible, which allows you to easily connect the necessary cables. For convenience, they are even highlighted so that they can be found in the dark.

    Keyboard and touchpad

While Alienware Area-51m and Razer BladePro got a mechanical keyboard, Legion Y740 here turned out to be their opposite. Its keyboard is more similar to the one installed in the Lenovo IdeaPad, since the keys are very soft when pressed.

When typing large texts will have to get used toSuch a return, but in games, it turned out to be very convenient. You will know 100% if you pressed a key or not, and the response time here is less than 1 ms. The only important point about which I want to say - instead of a digital block, it would be better to add custom keys for games here.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 keyboard also hascustom RGB backlight. To configure using the application Corsair iCUE. Navigating the menu frankly illogical, however, the possibilities here are enormous. You can even customize the backlight of the side holes and save your own profiles for any of the zones.

As for the Lenovo Y740 touchpad, it turned outsmall compared to the 15-inch panel in the Razer. The Mylar surface here is a mixture of polyesters, it is a bit softer than glass, but it still provides excellent slip and supports precise gestures.

The left and right buttons clearly click when pressed,This provides more reliable feedback. Manufacturers in gaming laptops usually do not pay attention to this, but Lenovo does not lose sight of even the details.

    Display and sound

17-inch screen Lenovo Legion Y740 supportsfrequency up to 144 Hz, which is ideal for gaming. The display has a matte IPS matrix, which allows to avoid glare at any viewing angles. Like the ROG Zephyrus S GX701, the Legion Y740 supports G-Sync technology. Means that the laptop produces an ultra-smooth frame rate in fast games like Forza Motorsport 7.

Against the background of competitors, the Y740 panel is not lost andgives out a good color scale, with a low color error. In simple terms, the color reproduction is as accurate as possible here, it will appeal to gamers, and even those who create the content. The screen contrast is also decent - 700: 1, according to the colorimeter, even the Blade was worse. The Lenovo Legion matte screen has a brightness of about 300 nits, which pleasantly surprises me.

Dolby Atmos speakers deliver a lotpleasure. While playing Battlefield V, I even felt the vibrations of the table from the shots. The drivers are located in the right and left corners of the case. Even at full volume here, I did not hear any distortion or failure.

    Iron productivity

Lenovo Legion Y740 laptop is 100% related togaming segment, which means it must have the very top stuffing. The device runs on a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7-8750H processor and 16 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB Samsung PCIe NVMe SSD paired with a Seagate hard drive of 1 TB is installed in the test version.

To cool the laptop, Lenovo installedspecial cooling system "Coldfront Cooling", which removes the heat of the processor and video card using special radiators and ventilation in the lower part of the body It copes with its task and always keeps the laptop cool, even during intense tasks.

To test the power of this iron I immediatelylaunched the Geekbench test. In the multi-core test, the Legion Y740 even outstripped the Razer Blade and Zephyrus S GX701. A similar situation emerges in the multi-core test, where the Y740 is gaining more than 22,000 points, surpassing most of the laptops that I managed to test.

In more realistic scenarios, the laptop could still make a vivid impression on me. In the video encoding test, I got 140 seconds, which is almost a record that the Zephyrus S GX701 had previously set.

    Gaming performance

From tracing to DLSS,Nvidia 20-series RTX desktop graphics cards have already demonstrated their superiority. The Lenovo-reviewed Y740 has an RTX 2080 Max-Q graphic chip, so you definitely won't have enough gaming power.

I get the best results.advantages of new graphics in 3DMark Fire Strike tests. The power of the new video card allowed the Legion Y740 to bypass the Razer Blade 2019 with the RTX 2070 Max-Q, earning 16793 points. Ahead was perhaps that Zephyrus S GX701 with RTX 2080.

In games I never for a second thought aboutthat Lenovo Legion Y740 can not cope with something. Even at the extreme settings in Fortnite, I got 119 fps, on high-quality settings it is already 154 fps. In Battlefield V, too, everything was very cool: a medium laptop gave out 103 fps, an ultra one - 120 fps (which is strange). Even in more demanding games he got the most, and in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey he could play at 60 fps.

Compared to other gaming laptops onRTX 20 Series Video Cards Y740 has shown excellent results. On Ultra settings in the Civilization VI, I saw 125 fps, for comparison, the Zephyrus S GX701 produces 95 fps on the same settings, and Blade - 114 fps.

With such a crazy legion performanceY740 always kept cool. During the hot battles in Battlefield V, I did not feel that the car under my hands was starting to heat up. Heat flow is directed to the back of the keyboard and next to the power button. The maximum processor temperature did not exceed 79 degrees, and the video card 61карC.

    Autonomy Lenovo Legion Y740

As you should have guessed, crazypower hits the battery. Legion Y740 could not work for a long time even with a screen brightness of 100 nits. For example, with looped video playback, 1080p 76 watt battery lasted only 3 hours.

In the test with web surfing the situation was similar- about 3 hours of autonomy. The Y740 was ahead of the Zephyrus S GX701 with its two hours, but still lagged behind the Blade (5 hours). Alas, the record still belongs to the Dell XPS 15 - it lasted 14 hours.

Lenovo Legion Y740 technology supportOptimus, with maximum energy efficiency, runs Intel integrated graphics, and for performance, the Nvidia card. I restarted the test with this mode, the result is not much, but it changed - I got 2 hours more with web surfing and three while looping video. Even so, he was behind the majority of laptops with integrated graphics, which on average produced 7-8 hours.

Lenovo Legion Y740 even looked likeThinkPad series laptops, has become one of the best gaming laptops, which has enormous power for modern games Unfortunately, the lack of a mechanical keyboard and weak autonomy spoils the impression here.

    Should I buy?

Yes. With the RTX 2080 Max-Q video card, Legion Y740 performance is what you need for hard games. The laptop is cheaper, Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 with the same video card and the same basic characteristics.
