Samsung SDI, a leading manufacturer of batteries, is actively exploring promising solid-state battery technologies and has recently announced yet another breakthrough that could enable the early adoption of such batteries.

Fully Solid State Batteries with Long Lifelifetimes were investigated by a team of scientists from two scientific divisions of Samsung: Samsung Higher Institute of Technology and Samsung Research Institute in Japan. The results of scientific work on the creation of highly efficient and durable batteries were presented on March 9 in London.

The main advantage of solid statebatteries, in front of the most common lithium-ion batteries today, the specific gravity of stored energy per unit mass becomes. Solid-state batteries have significantly higher capacity compared to traditionally comparable mass batteries. At the same time, less harm is done to the environment and increased operational safety.

However, lithium anodes are most oftenused in fully solid-state batteries, tend to cause dendrite growth, which negative side effects reduce battery life and battery safety. The solution to this problem is devoted to the development of research engineers from Samsung.

It was proposed to use as an anodesilver-carbon composite material (Ag-C). The use of this type of anode was tested on the prototype and showed a significant increase in capacity, operating time and increased safety. The thickness of the nanolayer of silver with carbon is only 5 μm, which ensured a decrease in the thickness of the anode and an increase in the energy density up to 900 Wh / l. The volume of the developed prototype was 50% less than a similar lithium-ion battery.

Laboratory prototype created by engineersSamsung is able to provide energy to an electric car for 800 km of autonomous path without recharging. In this case, the solid-state battery has a lifetime of more than 1000 recharging cycles. Such characteristics, in the case of the creation of serial batteries, can lead to a significant expansion of the electric car market. However, the developers have not yet announced the timing of the start of mass production of such solid-state batteries and did not mention the likely cost of such devices.
