In 2020, TSMC will begin industrial production of processors for the 5-nm process technology

Taiwan TSMC Continues to Develophigh-tech production of processors using 7-nm technology and next year may begin mass production of chips manufactured by the 5-nm process technology.

An insider source reports that at presenttime on the experimental line production of workable 5-nm processors reaches 50%. This figure is higher than the percentage of usable 7-nm chips produced at the same testing stage in the past.

TSMC officials previously saidthat the 5-nm process technology went through the preliminary development stage and transferred to the test risk production stage. In the absence of any unexpected problems, the company plans to start mass production as early as the first quarter of 2020.

In addition, it became known that preliminaryorders for processors exceeded expectations and a decision was made to increase the production of chips from 50 to 70 thousand pieces per month. In the future, production can reach 80 thousand processors per month. Among the first, it is planned to release Apple A14, Hisilicon Kirin 1000 and AMD Zen 4 chips.

5nm full-scale chip manufacturingthe technological process will be deployed by the end of the second quarter of 2020, and the first smartphones with new processors will enter the market by September 2020. These will be the Apple iPhone 12 and Huawei Mate 40 models.

Processors for computer systems based on 5-nm technology will be the first to be introduced in AMD CPUs based on Zen4 architecture and will enter the market already in 2021.

Using 5nm technology will allowsignificantly increase the efficiency of processors compared to previous 7-nm chips. So in the Cortex A72 cores, the density of logical components will increase by 1.8 times, which will reduce energy consumption by 30% or increase computing power by 15%.
