Three leading technology companies of Huawei,Qualcomm and Samsung in a joint press release announced support for the new MPEG-5 Essential Video Coding (EVC) video encoding standard. The main advantage of the new format will be support for higher resolution and increased compression efficiency compared to alternative MPEG formats.

The new MPEG-5 EVC standard will enableWatch 4K, 8K, HDR, VR, and AR videos on more devices than previously available. It will also provide more efficient compression when working with 4K UHD. The new format will become popular with the development of fifth-generation networks, allowing you to transfer higher-resolution video files to mobile devices.

In the development of a new format took partHuawei, Qualcomm and Samsung, which have now announced their intention to ensure the rapid distribution of MPEG-5, through the use of an optimal licensing system for the main patents for the presented format.

The main competitor to MPEG-5 EVC is the codecAV1 supported by MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G processor. This codec provides the most effective compression that allows mobile device owners to watch high-quality video with less Internet traffic.
