Review Huawei MateBook X Pro (2022)

I got my hands on a top-end Huawei laptop called the MateBook X Pro. As far as I understand, the latest X Pro

updated two years ago, so the X Pro 2022 is a hugely important product.

What has changed during this time:

  1. The device has become a little lighter
  2. The screen received a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz
  3. The display diagonal has grown a little
  4. Screen resolution increased
  5. The matrix received support for 1 billion colors
  6. The processor has been updated, now it is the 12th generation Core-i7
  7. Improved memory type
  8. Slightly increased battery capacity
  9. Bluetooth upgraded to version 5.2
  10. USB ports are now capable of transmitting 8K
  11. Increased the number of speakers
  12. Increased power adapter power

In my opinion, the list of changes for the better is quite impressive.

The positioning is extremely clear: a premium laptop in a thin and durable case for various office (and not only) tasks. If you want an analogy, then this is the Apple MacBook Air on Windows 11.

At Huawei, the model is sold in twoOptions: Premium Edition and regular version. The first includes devices in white and blue colors, and the classic is silver. The difference is that the Premium Edition is a little thinner, a little lighter, a special soft-touch material is applied to the metal, the display of such gadgets uses a nano-optical layer with magnetic control to eliminate glare.

The MateBook X Pro PE versions are also the first laptops to receive the TÜV Rheinland Eye Comfort 3.0 certification. A similar thing is in the MatePad Pro 11 tablet.

Three things that stand out about the MateBook X Pro 2022:

  1. Powerful 12th Gen Core i7-1260P processor
  2. 3.1K resolution touchscreen with 90Hz refresh rate
  3. Plenty of fast memory: 16GB LPDR5 RAM and 1TB storage

The premium version of the laptop will cost 138,000 rubles, the basic ("space gray") - 124,000 rubles.

As previously stated, Huaweioffers three colors of the laptop: premium - white and blue, basic - silver. Each of them is interesting in its own way. For example, "blue ink" (this is the official name of the color) stands out against the background of black and silver devices, looks unusual. White color is also not bad, but very easily soiled, as it seems to me. And silver is a classic, for those who are not used to choosing a gadget in appearance.

With MateBook X Pro - just a story about design, about color, about things with a good ratio of weight and dimensions.

The body of the device is completely metal. The manufacturer says that microarc oxidation is used here. After MAO treatment, the thinnest layer of oxide coating is formed on the case: protection against wear and corrosion is increased, and decorative and protective characteristics are improved.

The surface of the device in blue resembles a soft-touch, only more dense. Kind of like painted cardboard. Feels like holding a book in your hands. Very cool impressions.

Another nice feature is that the material is notcold. I don’t know about you, but I read the news or watch TV shows before going to bed. So, usually a metal case unpleasantly cools your knees or stomach (depending on where you put the laptop). The MateBook X Pro is very comfortable in this regard, as its surface is always neutral - neither cold nor hot from the operation of the gadget.

X Pro weighs about 1260 grams. For example, the MateBook 14s weighs 1430 grams, the 2021 MateBook X Pro weighs 1340 grams, and the Apple MacBook Air (M2) weighs 1240 grams.

The dimensions of the X Pro 2022 are 310x221x15.6 mm. For example, MateBook 14s is 313x229x16.7 mm, MateBook X Pro 2021 is 304x217x14.6 mm, Apple MacBook Air (M2) is 304x215x11.3 mm.

In general, as you can see, the 2022 Huawei MateBook X Pro is quite compact. At the same time, I emphasize, it has a 14.2-inch matrix and a 60 Wh battery.

The body of the device is easily soiled, but the traces are not strongvisible and easy to wipe off. The assembly is perfect, there is nothing to complain about: the upper central area almost does not flex, despite the thickness of the gadget. No cracks or gaps.

Of the pleasant ergonomic things: the laptop lid opens without lifting the bottom of the device.

Total: light, compact, ergonomic, quite nice, durable.

Size comparison: MatePad Pro 11 (11-inch screen) vs. MateBook X Pro (14.2-inch screen)

The device is equipped with four rubber feet. The back is slightly higher than the front. This was done specifically for better ventilation from below, since that is where the cooling system is located. The legs are strong and the laptop stands upright.

Left side of the body:

  • 3.5 mm audio output for headphones and microphone (if you happen to have a headset)
  • USB Type-C interface Thunderbolt 4
  • USB Type-C interface Thunderbolt 4
  • Battery indicator

Right side of the body:

  • USB Type-C
  • USB Type-C

You can connect devices and a power adapter to each of the USB connectors.

About 3 years ago, Ugreen sent me a USB-Chub At that time, I didn’t even realize how much I needed this, since there were still few USB-C laptops. Now I uncovered the gadget and use it with pleasure. The MateBook comes with a regular USB-C to USB-A adapter.

The use of USB-C connectors is not subject toonly modern standards, but also tritely small in size, since it would be difficult to place USB-A in the MateBook X Pro: the thickness of the lower part is about 5.5 mm.

At the front of the device are fourmicrophones that pick up a person's voice even at a distance of up to 5 meters. It is unlikely that someone will communicate on a laptop from such a distance, but, apparently, just in case.

Bottom right and left there are holes for sound output from the speakers. There are 6 of them here.

Warm air exits from the back through neat openings in the case. They are almost invisible.

The camera, the indicator of its operation, the light sensor are located on the front panel of the display.

Totally classic keyboard without numeric keypadkey block. There is a white backlight, two levels, the brightness is average, the fill is uniform, at an angle the LEDs do not blind the eyes, unlike more affordable laptops. This is an important plus.

The button travel is large, the pressure is soft. It is convenient to print texts due to fixation and punching. The keyboard is definitely better than those used in the company's laptops until 2021.

Compared to MacBook keyboards, they have less travel. Overall, the feel is exactly the same as the HP Pavilion 600 (this is my work keyboard).

For the convenience of logging in, the manufacturerprovided a fingerprint scanner right in the power button. But I mostly used facial recognition. The function works even in the dark. And quite quickly and accurately. The button is round, located above the Del button. The power button is flush.

The touchpad is long, 120 mm, and not narrow (like Gudkov), 83 mm. The surface feels like glass or very smooth plastic. The slip is average, that is, not like clockwork.

In the design of the touchpad, Huawei appliedtechnology called Free Touch (of course, there is multi-touch). If to explain in simple terms: under the surface there is a vibration motor like Taptic Engine. Each time you press the touchpad, you feel as if your finger is physically pressed into the surface. Moreover, the work area is the entire touchpad.

The tactile sensations are incredibly pleasant. If you have ever used smartphones with such a return, then you know what it is. Physical buttons compared to Free Touch are the last century.

As far as I know, this technology was first used in Huawei MateBook X 2020.

Working hours

A 60 Wh battery is installed inside. Most likely, the model is HB5781P1EEW-31A with parameters of 5195 mAh, 11.55 V.

A similar battery is installed in Huawei MateBook 14s

In mixed mode (typing, browsing, video encoding, watching movies) the device lives for about 7 hours, which is very good for such a compact laptop.

If a little more:

  • Up to 6 hours of YouTube viewing at 30% brightness and 50% volume
  • Up to 4 hours of non-demanding toys
  • Up to 8 hours of working with documents at 30% brightness of the matrix backlight (against Wi-Fi with Telegram)

The data was obtained at a screen frequency of 90 Hz.

That is, in general, I did not worry aboutautonomy, since the MateBook X Pro 2022 was more or less enough for a working day. Again, you have a 90W charge that will give you almost 60% battery capacity in 30 minutes.

Another point: the charging is powerful, so it feeds the device, even when it is 100% loaded with different stress tests.

In this case, we are dealing with the tmx1422 model. Its characteristics are presented in the table.

Release date 2022 year
Dimensions 300x200 mm
Aspect Ratio 3:2

Ripple Ratio (PWM) 0.5% - 3% (with matrix brightness 100% - 10%)

Color depth 8 + 2 bit FRC

In general, this is one of the best screens amonglaptops. Here and high brightness, and accurate color reproduction, and high resolution, and a frequency of 90 Hz. No distortion, great viewing angles. Excellent black depth. If it is important for you to have a screen without explicit PWM, then the MateBook X Pro is just that.

This model is equipped with a Core i7-1260P processor. It was created in 2022 for thin laptops, but with active cooling. Equipped with four cores with support for Hyper-Threading technology and eight economical ones without HT. The processor belongs to the Alder Lake P family.

Judging by the performance, the Core i7-1260P model can be compared with the Core i5-11260H or Ryzen 7 5800U.

Integrated into the chip is Iris Xe graphics with 96 compute units. This is the GeForce MX350 level.

Below are performance tests. For example, in the Unigine Heaven Benchmark 4.0 program, the device showed a result of 145 points in normal mode and 152 points in performance mode. The settings were Ultra/FullHD.

The Cinebench R23 test shows 1700 PTS in Single and 8300 PTS in Multi.

The popular PC Mark 10 benchmark gives the MateBook X Pro a score of 4423.

In games, Iris Xe Graphics G7 performs 20% better than NVIDIA GeForce MX350 and 50% better than AMD Radeon Vega 8.

Video encoding in Premiere: a 10-minute video takes 9 minutes 10 seconds to process.

I did not even notice significant heating of the caseunder high CPU load. Fans were turned on only in cases when the device obviously had great difficulty digesting the content (video encoding, stress tests). The cooling works quietly, the rustling is pleasant, it looks like white noise.

The Fn+P key combination turns on the performance mode, which increases the TDP of the processor to 30W and provides additional processing power needed for multitasking.

As for memory, the RAM is 16 GB (LPDDR5). For such devices, it is quite enough. I use just so much on my PC until I complain, although I edit videos and work with photos.

The drive is a 1TB NVMe PCIe SSD. The model is most likely from the manufacturer YMTC. The speed is high - 3500/2900 MB / s!

Here, a 720p module is used, which makes frames at a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The quality is so-so, but it will do for video conferencing, especially since the viewing angle is very wide.

About sound

The laptop is equipped with six speakers. As far as I understand, the device has two woofers (located “back to back” to eliminate resonance) and two more speakers for medium and high frequencies (on the right and left inside the case).

The MateBook X Pro 2022 sounds great. Both music and movies play clean, loud, with bass. Definitely better than previous generations of Huawei laptops.

The X Pro also has four microphones. The quality is not bad. It is best to record voice at a distance of 1 meter to 1.5 meters. But the manufacturer says that the microphones pick up the voice even at a distance of up to 5 meters. This is true, but the intelligibility is reduced.

Notebook Huawei MateBook X Pro will suit those who are looking for a device that will meet the following conditions:

  1. Lightweight and compact
  2. High screen resolution and refresh rate
  3. High storage speed
  4. Huge SSD capacity
  5. Decent amount of RAM
  6. Silent operation
  7. Comfortable keyboard
  8. Large touchpad with vibration feedback
  9. Good battery life
  10. Loud quality speakers

The only caveat is the conference camera. It has low resolution. Could put at least FullHD.

It is also worth understanding that the MateBook X Pro 2022 is notgaming device. His path is working with photos or drawings, editing and encoding videos at an above-average level, documents, presentations, reading, and so on.

The cost of the device is 124,000 rubles for the basic version of "space gray", 138,000 rubles - for the Premium Edition in "white" and "blue" colors.

I found ASUS Zenbook 14X as a competitor for150,000 rubles. There is a Core i7-1165G7, 16 GB of RAM (LPDD4), a 512 GB drive, and a weight of 1.4 kg. 14-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2880 × 1800 (16:10).
