  • Exactly 3 years ago, I happened to get acquainted with a Huawei laptop, model MateBook D14. Today, almost 36 months after that moment, the Huawei MateBook D16 fell into my hands.

The model has received many features from other MateBooks, but we have to admit that it is much more original. This is a really interesting device from the beloved and popular series of laptops from Huawei.

The Huawei MateBook D16 is a laptop with a slightly higher price tag than its predecessor. However, this is a very advantageous offer considering what the equipment offers.

What catches the eye, immediately after extractionlaptop out of the box? Its dimensions. When I placed it next to the 14-inch Acer TravelMate P4, I noticed the unique proportions. The Huawei laptop is definitely wider, although it may still be an ultrabook.

    Design and display

The D16 is a classic in design andMateBook. Here we are dealing with a homogeneous aluminum body, which makes the device look very solid. It clearly feels like a higher price shelf, even in terms of build quality. The design is minimalistic, although as soon as we open the lid, we find a few elements that immediately catch our eye.

First of all, I will note that the screen is hereexceptionally large for a device like this - 16.1-inches - it's a really large workspace. IPS-display with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, covered with a matte anti-reflective layer. It reproduces quite well - white and black. In this respect, I have nothing to complain about, especially since the panel is surrounded by extremely narrow frames.

Moreover, I can say with confidence thatwith sRGB display at 98%, this notebook is great for graphics or multimedia applications. Surprisingly, the aforementioned matte finish doesn't get in the way here. The manufacturer also applied blue light reduction technology to the model, for which your eyes will certainly be grateful to you.

    Keyboard and touchpad

I should also mention the rather comfortablekeyboard, it was very pleasant to type on it. Despite the fact that the device is quite wide, the manufacturer, unfortunately, did not take advantage of this opportunity to the maximum, fitting here an inferior keyboard.

The keyboard of the Huawei MateBook D16 is surrounded by tworectangular black blocks, under which the speakers are hidden. On the right side there is a power button, with a fingerprint scanner built into it. However, this is not all that is hidden in the MateBook D16. The aforementioned narrow bezels surround the screen from almost all sides, and to my surprise, I didn't find a camera lens.

A few seconds of intense search and Idiscovered that the camera was hidden under one of the keys on the keyboard, between F6 and F7. It rises automatically when you press a unique key. A similar solution is already known from several previous Huawei laptops, and, unfortunately, it has drawbacks.

Such a low position of the camera lens canbe problematic. During video conferences, our interlocutors will watch us from below, it will be difficult for you to maintain eye contact. A big plus in terms of privacy is that the camera can be quickly hidden.

It is also worth saying a few words about the touchpad, itis really big and measures 12 × 7 cm. I can compare it to the touchpad in a MacBook, it also responds very accurately to commands. The touchpad buttons are integrated into a common plate, so they are not separated.

    Ports and connectors

As for the ports available on the MateBook D16,it has everything the average user would need in 2021. On the left edge is an HDMI 2.0 connector and two full USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports with Display Port support. Means that we can use them to connect an external display to the computer.

Interestingly, both ports can alsoused to charge laptop. It is a pity that they were not placed on opposite sides - that would have given much more freedom. On the right side there are two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 and a hybrid headphone jack.

    Components and hardware

Now let's move on to one of the most importantquestions, namely what we get inside this undoubtedly beautiful device. Huawei MateBook D16 uses AMD Ryzen 5 4600H system. It is a 6-core and 12-thread processor designed using 7nm lithography.

The processor works in tandem with the integrated Radeon graphics chip, unfortunately we don't have a dedicated graphics card. In addition, the laptop is equipped with 16 GB of RAM (2 × 8 GB DDR4) and 512 GB NVMe SSD.

When preparing the review, I ran some synthetic tests, they reliably show the performance of the laptop.

    Performance tests

My classic benchmark suite includes 3DMark (for testing graphics performance), Cinnebench (for assessing processor performance), and PC Mark for overall PC performance assessment.

The results obtained by the Huawei MateBook D16 are as follows:

    • 3DMark: 996
    • Cinnebench: 7784
    • PCMark: 5081

Conclusions?Ryzen 5 is doing well with performance, although its Achilles' heel is the lack of a more powerful graphics system. The integrated Radeon graphics are not overwhelmingly powerful, and if the manufacturer had added a dedicated graphics card here, the situation would be completely different.

    Real use

If we talk about my impressions of the realusing Huawei MateBook D16 ... I must honestly admit that they are positive. The laptop runs very smoothly and responsively. My impression is that the MateBook D16 is a computer that fits perfectly into an untapped market niche.

Это производительный и мобильный лэптоп с большой matrix of excellent quality. Ideal tool for office work and entertainment. A web browser or various office programs did not give the D16 any problems. But, you should avoid tasks that place a heavy load on the graphics system.

Here we cannot count on highperformance due to really average Radeon integrated graphics. Yes, photo processing is possible, but video processing can take a lot of patience.

It's pointless to play on this laptop, unlessnot in old and simple names. New games will require us to make significant trade-offs in terms of graphics settings, and even then, you will get a maximum of around 30 frames per second.

    Autonomy MateBook D16

Huawei MateBook D16 laptop does a good job withautonomous work. Once unplugged, you can expect approximately 9 hours of battery life on a single charge. The manufacturer also guarantees that by connecting the laptop to the charger for just 15 minutes, we get as much as 2 hours of work.

Naturally, these statements should be considerednot as an axiom, but, my subjective feelings, during the tests, rather confirm these promises. Working on a laptop in a standard way for me, alas, I did not manage to reach 8-8.5 hours. The charger is very compact here, so it doesn't take up much space.

Huawei Matebook D16 - really offersan interesting design that, although not completely universal, should satisfy most users. It is stylish and solid at the same time. In fact, the device's only drawback is that it doesn't have a more powerful GPU. However, this is only felt in extreme cases.

    Should I buy?

For everyday work in isolation from a pandemic, the MateBook D16 is just right! With a price of 75 thousand rubles, this is a rather interesting offer.
