Today, the most sought-after goods in the worldare personal protective equipment - hand antiseptics, disposable gloves and face masks. So it is not surprising that these products disappeared from pharmacies and stores. Meanwhile, in some countries you cannot go outside without a protective mask - this is fraught with a fine and even arrest. In addition, you can’t do without a mask if you yourself are sick or care for a sick person. But where can I get masks if you can’t buy them in pharmacies and stores? Fortunately, nature has rewarded us with hands, with which you can sew on your own - or just make a protective mask - as I did. Of course, such a mask is not intended for use in a medical institution, but it will be effective if you care for a sick person or are in a public place.

Do I need to wear masks during coronavirus?
Yes. But first, let's make it clear: masks, no matter how effective they are, do not guarantee 100% protection against CoVID-19. According to the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO), the most effective way not to get infected with SARS-CoV-2 is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and observe social distance. Of course, in an ideal world, each person would have enough protective masks and this would help prevent the spread of the virus. However, reality paints a slightly different picture and there are not enough masks for everyone. According to The Verge, on April 3, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States issued recommendations - from now on, protective masks are necessary for all citizens, and not just those who have symptoms.
Simple fabric masks preventthe spread of the virus - so people who don’t know that they are infected by wearing a makeshift mask will not infect others. As the results of a new study showed, people without symptoms can infect others, and the virus is able to spread while we talk or breathe. I recall that it was previously believed that coronavirusspreads by drip when a person sneezes or coughs. I hope that the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation will also soon recommend that citizens wear fabric face masks in public places. And in order to better understand how the protective masks differ from each other and which of them are most effective, we have prepared an article for you.

However, a fabric mask may be needed at home,if you are forced to care for a sick person or become infected yourself and worry about the health of loved ones. It is best if you have two masks and not one so that you can wear one mask while the second is sterilized. This article is a simple cheat sheet, which I hope will help you make a mask yourself. And if at home the alcohol antiseptic for hands ended, then my colleague Artem Sutyagin in his article told in detail how to make an antiseptic at home.
What problems can you face?
Agree, in life there are different situations andsometimes such seemingly commonplace things as a needle with a thread may simply not be at hand. It was in this situation today that I found myself: where did the needles that I definitely bought go - the secret behind seven seals, but the thread was in abundance. A small manual sewing machine came to the rescue, which was waiting for its finest hour for about six months. It’s not clear whether I have a problem or a typewriter, but after two and a half hours the typewriter and a damaged piece of cloth remained sadly lying in the corner, and my hatred of needlework reached its climax. However, even if you don’t have a needle with a thread on hand or you, like me, you’re unfortunate, do not despair, because you can make a mask without them.

How to make a mask without a needle with a thread and a sewing machine?
In order to make a mask from directly available tools, you will need:
- Fabric (it is best to take a small cotton or synthetic scarf)
- Elastic band (you can use elastic bands for hair)
Important! This homemade mask is not intended foruse by medical personnel in hospitals and it, of course, is worse than a fabric mask that can be sewn, as it may not completely fit to the face. However, if you need to go to a store or pharmacy where there may be many people or help a sick person, even such a simple mask is better than a complete lack of protection.
To make the simplest mask, I took a small cotton scarf and folded it in half several times.
Then on each edge of the scarf you need to put on an elastic band(an elastic band for hair is suitable) - I had a section of a regular gray elastic band that can be pulled up to the desired size - and carefully fold both edges of the scarf into each other so that it can be pulled over both elastic bands on each side.
Of course, such a mask does not fit too tightly to the face, so it’s better to still find a needle with a thread and sew the mask. And if you have a sewing machine at home, then no problems should arise.
How to sew a mask with your own hands?
Despite the heated debate about whichfabric is best used for making masks - cotton or linen; in fact, there is no evidence that these fabrics are better or worse than others. Therefore, the fabric that is at your fingertips is quite suitable.
So you will need:
- Fabric (at your discretion)
After the desired fabric is selected, cut fromher piece in size 36 cm by 20 cm and fold it in half. Then make three folds so that the mask can be folded and then expanded. The folds themselves should be about a couple of centimeters wide. Each fold then needs to be ironed thoroughly with an iron. When all the folds are ironed, open the folds and put a small piece of elastic on each edge of the mask (the elastic should be slightly longer in width than the mask). After that, fold the mask again along the already ironed lines and sew the side edges with a needle and thread or on a sewing machine. And to make it easier for you, watch the video below:
If there is no elastic, it is quite possible to use a tape, braid or tight rope instead. The main condition is that the mask should fit snugly to the face.
And do not forget that no mask will protect you from CoVID-19 and other infections 100%. The best you can do is stay at home, reduce contacts between people, wash hands, follow all recommendations of the World Health Organization and try to be as nervous as possible, as stress negatively affects immunity.
