Given the fact that planet Earth is inextreme climatic situation, as was recently announced by 11 thousand scientists from 153 countries of the world, not only researchers, but also journalists are looking for the best ways to combat global warming. During an essay contest for The Economist called Open Future Essay Competition 2019, the GPT-2 processing algorithm, which was publicly presented in February by the OpenAI research and ethics group of artificial intelligence in San Francisco The algorithm was asked the question: "How to deal with climate change." And this is what he answered.
How does artificial intelligence intend to solve the problem of global warming?
Although the winner of the essay competition wasannounced in September, bypassing almost 2400 applications from participants from more than 110 countries of the world, the response of AI, although it did not become a prize-winner, but it seems quite interesting. The essay of AI fit into 400 words. During the test, the judges were not informed which particular essay was written by the algorithm. Answering the question of what fundamental economic and political changes, if any, are necessary for an effective response to climate change, the algorithm proposed the construction of a sustainable energy system that would be affordable and environmentally friendly. The main premise of the essay is that AI proposes to transform the economy of the energy system by investing in accessible infrastructure for all. According to the algorithm, people are not fully aware of the consequences of creating a new economic system, and therefore offers a detailed scenario according to which mankind refuses fossil fuels and switches to completely new and clean energy sources. After which a system is built that increases the economic opportunities for workers. Thus, for the first time in history, the world can become energy independent, which allows all people in all global communities to work together and create a reliable economic system. Given the paradigm shift, it may be time to think about what we can do differently. The algorithm does not exclude the possibility of creating an economy that produces enough energy to feed all people on the planet. That's just how, AI did not specify.
This is interesting: What else is artificial intelligence capable of?
In the long run, the fight against changeThe climate algorithm offers a new way of doing business - energy efficient. According to AI, a change in thinking about the economic and social context of global warming can be a significant factor in reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere of our planet. The algorithm notes in its essay that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has called for a tripartite approach to tackling climate change, in which governments, rich and poor, seek to reduce air emissions and developing countries also need to take steps to combat climate change. At the same time, the MGIIEK report calls it incomplete and offers to study in more detail the question of how to respond to global warming.

And yet, according to the algorithm, it is necessary to solveThe issue with the growing population on the planet is that more and more land is being used to feed such a large number of people, which contributes to climate change. And climate change, in turn, leads to increased natural disasters and lack of resources. If the situation does not change, AI draws a rather gloomy picture: the rapid increase in the value of world wealth will reduce the amount of energy available for conservation and economic development, and therefore increase the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. This will entail extreme weather conditions, violent and often violent conflicts, as well as droughts. Such an environment, in turn, will increase the risk of starvation and the spread of diseases and other infectious diseases.
Globally, the effects of changeclimate will intensify. The essay of the algorithm ends with the following words: “we must recognize this risk for the future of human civilization and act now to try to prevent it.”
What did the judges say?
Several judges rated the essay using the samestandards and time, as for hundreds of peer-reviewed. They rated the essay written by AI as having no practical solution. The tone of the essay, according to experts, is hypothetical and abstract. They were also embarrassed by a large number of rhetorical questions. The decision of the algorithm to create an “alternative economy” seemed unclear and not fully understood. One of the judges noted that the AI essay does not give a fundamental answer to the question and does not represent a single new idea, is not a convincing argument and is not particularly well written.
