How many days does a coronavirus live on money, masks and clothes?

At the time of this writing, April 7, 2020years, COVID-19 coronavirus infected more than 1,340,000 inhabitants of our planet. To slow down its spread, authorities in many countries asked people not to contact each other and stay at home. It is also recommended that all people wash their hands as often as possible and not touch their faces, because particles of the virus can persist on the surfaces of objects and enter the human body through the eyes, nose and mouth. Today, going out into the street, almost every person comes into contact with three things: wearing a medical mask on his face, his own clothes and money. The question arises - how long can particles of the coronavirus COVID-19 live on their surface and pose a danger to our health? The answer to this question was given by Chinese scientists.

Particles of coronavirus COVID-19 may remain on clothing surfaces, so be careful

To do this, they conducted a fairly simple experiment, the essence of which was described in the scientific journal The Lancet Microbe. Researchers took 5 microliters each COVID-19 virus and applied them with a pipetteon different materials. In particular, scientists were interested in how long the virus will remain active on paper and various tissues. The choice fell precisely on these materials because money, clothes and medical masks were made from them. The experiment was conducted in a room with a relative humidity of 65% - such conditions are typical for both rooms and for the street. And this was very important for scientists, because they wanted to identify the survivability of the virus under any conditions.

5 microliters equal to 0.005 milliliters, so that the volume of viruses could only be seen under the microsocp.

In the course of observations, scientists revealed an interestingproperty of coronavirus COVID-19. As illogical as this sounds, particles of the virus are better retained on smooth surfaces than on rough ones. But, it would seem, on a rough surface, the virus clearly has something to cling to and it should stay longer. But no, uneven surfaces are clearly uncomfortable for him, but scientists cannot yet explain this phenomenon.

This is strange, but the coronavirus lives less on clothes than on money

As for how many days the coronavirus lives on objects, the results are as follows:

  • the cloth keeps the virus on itself for about two days, which is not so much;
  • money keep the virus on themselves for four days;
  • medical masks keep the virus for more than seven days, and during the first four days the virus is especially active.

In general, more information about the lifetime of a coronavirus on different surfaces can be found in the material of Daria Yeletskaya.

At what temperature does the coronavirus die?

In the course of scientific work, it was possible to determine the second property of the coronavirus COVID-19. It turned out that it is really sensitive to temperature and the higher it is, the less time the virus lives:

  • at 4 degrees celsius the virus lived for 14 days;
  • at 22 degrees celsius the virus lived for 7 days;
  • at 37 degrees Celsius the virus died on day 2;
  • at 70 degrees celsius the virus died after 5 minutes;
  • at 220 degrees Celsius the virus dies in a minute.

Based on the results of the study, you cansuggest that the bath and hot tub can actually destroy the virus, but there is no scientific evidence for this. And if there were, then hot water procedures could only kill the virus on the surface of the body. And to remove particles of the virus from the skin, as we know, it’s enough to wash your hands and face thoroughly with soap and water, and you don’t need to walk into a hot bath, much less in a bath.

Refuse cash during a pandemic. Take contactless cards with you or set up Google Pay or Apple Pay on your smartphone - you'll be calmer

And the fact that coronavirus can persist onmedical masked for two weeks, scary. This is further evidence that medical masks must be changed every two hours. At the same time, they should never be touched on the outside, because if there are viruses, then they are concentrated on this part of the mask. If you have a home-made mask, just like my colleague Lyuba Sokovikova’s mask, you need to wash it regularly and preferably in a washing machine.

Do not forget that in addition to money, masks andclothes, we are in contact with other items. Door handles, light switches, shoes, and even packages of products purchased at the store - all this must be wiped with an antiseptic at least once a day. On the danger of products purchased in stores, we even have a separate article in which the founder of Mikhail Korolev shared how he washes products on the balcony and only then sends them to the kitchen. I recommend reading it!
