Ford Mustang Lithium. Why does an electric vehicle need a gearbox?

The image of the American roaring muscular has long beenovergrown with a halo of romance and pleasant nostalgia for the golden era of engines, even among those who were not born in the 70s of the last century. Detroit, compression, Daytona and many other words excite the minds of car lovers from around the world. Even if these words do not tell you anything, then you definitely heard about the Ford Mustang, and you probably immediately imagine a car ready to burst with a womb. That's only in our time, everything is changing and he was also bitten by a vampire in the electric vehicle industry. Although, one element of this legend is still eternal!

This is probably the most brutal electric car

One of our former colleagues often toldhumorous stories beginning with the words "Few know ...". They were a bit of anecdotes of their own composition and sounded very funny. I also want to start today's story with these words, but there are no jokes in it and really not everyone knows the following fact.

First electric car

Few people know that the first electric car appearedback in 1828, that is, long before the appearance of the first full-fledged car with an internal combustion engine. True, to call this electric car close to modern, the language does not turn. It was just a trolley driven by an electric motor.

But, at that time, a definition of a vehicle was formed, which is an electric car. That it allows you to separate them from other vehicles.

The term electric vehicle refers to a vehicle that uses electric energy from a chemical current source to move around the earth and drive a drive wheel.

First autonomous vehicle onElectric traction, which can be called similar to modern, was an apparatus built in 1899 by a Russian nobleman and engineer-inventor Ippolit Romanov. It was an omnibus for 17 passengers, with one “cab”, built according to the scheme of a traditional cab. The novelty could move with one of nine speed options from 1.6 to 37.4 km / h, and charging was required every 65 kilometers. Good performance for the century before last. That's just the prospect of this transport, as it is today, crashed about the reluctance of investors to invest in too innovative a project.

There was no Soviet Union, but there was already an electric car. The one created by Ippolit Romanov

Another achievement in this industry is datedsame year. It was then that a bullet-shaped electric car set a speed record, the first to break the 100 km / h line on land. He reached an unprecedented by the standards of the time 106 km / h. An electric car of the company Borland Electric, which traveled 103.8 miles (167 km) from Chicago to Milwaukee, set the reverse record, at a range of run, almost simultaneously with it. At the same time, the next day after a full charge, the car made the return trip, and the average speed on the route was 55 km / h. Let me remind you, it was 1889, that is, more than a hundred years ago.

This thing rushed at a speed of 106 km / h. Even looking scared

In the twentieth century, there were also cool developments, most of which, however, were aimed at the commercial sphere. It was all sorts of trucks, cars and other special equipment. The beginnings of movement in the direction of modern electric vehicles were laid in the early 80s, when oil began to rise in price and people realized that someday it would end.

In the twenty-first century, everything came to the conclusion thatevery major manufacturer followed by creating electric vehicles. So far, these steps are cautious, but you can clearly enough notice that new internal combustion engines are almost not being developed. Manufacturers do not want to invest in obsolete technologies and are balancing on this line. It is not worth saying that a big push in a new direction of the whole industry was given by Tesla, which showed that not only a tourist boat in a nature reserve or a warehouse loader could be an electric transport, but also a comfortable modern car.

Electric Mustang

The other day, Ford announced plans toin collaboration with Webasto to release a prototype of the legendary Mustang, but electrically powered. The car should be used as a training ground for researching further developments in this area.

I have only two explanations for whythis car was chosen for such a task. The first is that Mustang, as I said, is a legendary car and, having set it up on “electric rails”, the company will attract much more attention to itself than if it starts experimenting with the same Focus or Mondeo. Attention is needed from the image point of view and to demonstrate that Ford, which is not doing as well as before, is also at the forefront of progress and will soon be in the top of the electric vehicle industry.

The classic look of the Mustang of recent years

Secondly, it seems to me that this is the choiceThe car is due to the fact that it is located approximately in the middle between the company's SUVs, passenger cars and the equally legendary Ford GT. It’s just to make the GT right away that electric will be such a difficult task, but it’s definitely worth a try. Moreover, even the Chinese have examples of electric supercars.

The company discloses almost nonethe characteristics of the new electric car, in addition to the fact that it has an 800-volt battery installed, as in the Porsche Taycan presented in September this year. Another characteristic is the engine power in the region of 900 hp, which made the electric version even more powerful than the base gasoline.

Apparently, the company did not redothe basic concept of the car and decided not to redraw it to place batteries under the bottom, but simply fit everything in the free cavities of the car. For example, under a powerful hood, where a block with the inscription Webasto is installed. Perhaps so the company wants to try to keep the classic layout of the model as much as possible. True, if you place, though not all, but most of the batteries under the hood, it is not clear how the car will behave from the point of view of weight distribution. After all, batteries weigh a lot. Even more than an internal combustion engine with a gearbox. Speaking of the box ... It is here too. It's just not clear why.

Gearbox in an electric car

If you explain the presence of batteries under the hood, yes andIn general, the production of an electric Mustang is still possible, although it sounds like a “steam-powered airplane”, there are much more questions to the gearbox. Without further explanation, it is very difficult to justify its installation.

There is clearly something under this cover

The fact is that electric motors are famous for itits ability to work in any speed range. That is, for them there is almost no such concept as an increase in power and torque depending on the crankshaft speed. In addition, the electric motor can spin at any speed. He is able to move the car even at a speed of 1 km / h or less. In cars with an internal combustion engine, this is not possible, since the engine has a minimum speed at which it can operate normally. If the gear ratio does not allow him to maintain them while reducing speed, you have to poison the clutch. For this, including, we need a checkpoint.

If you visit our channel in Yandex.Zen, you can find there not only interesting news about cars, but also do not miss interesting discoveries from the world of science

As a result, the electric motor does not need a gearbox either to achieve maximum power, or to move away. Then why is it needed? As usual, there are two options.

The first is that the company simplydecided to do what’s called “for fun.” That is, such old schoolgirls and fans of gasoline engines and mechanics, like me, will receive their dose of pleasure. It’s not clear how, but they’ll get it. The second option is more realistic and promising.

It is possible that the company wantsto experiment with a new version of an electric car in which the drive will not be carried out directly to the wheels by the engines installed in them, but through the transmission, as is happening now with the ICE. That is, there will be one engine, and transmission will be through drives. In this case, you can find an explanation for the block under the hood and the presence of the gearbox.

The salon, as it were, tells us: “Look! I am an electric car! ”

The block under the cover with the inscription Webasto with thisthe layout is the engine, and the box will increase its resource, since you do not have to spin it too much. Accordingly, it will make fewer revolutions per unit distance and will be better preserved. The gearbox with this scheme will allow you to shift gears as you gain speed and reduce engine speed, again, as in the case of ICE.

A new type of electric car

If this is the case, then Ford is standing onthe threshold of new discoveries. Just as the company's founder, Henry Ford, made a revolution with his Ford T, his followers can now redraw the still nascent concept of a modern electric car.

Although, to be honest, it all looks doubtful. Any electric car must be economical and environmentally friendly. For this, the layout with engines on wheels is the best fit, since it is in this case that losses on shafts and units are significantly reduced. When using an internal combustion engine, this is inevitable, but for the electric era, this is atavism.

Although perhaps the company is simply PR orprepares a base for instant entry into the electric car market. After all, if the case fires, they will be able to make all their cars electric, without redoing their concept, but simply placing a new block under the hood. If this is the case, then this is really tricky. Whether it is true or not, we will not know now, but soon enough.
