Cooperation between Samsung and Microsoft. How not to notice an elephant in a small room

Hello.

Journalism is in a coma, I have no other explanation for what is happening. Every day,

leafing through newspapers, I encounter a hugenumber of invented “facts”, the absence of logic as such has become the norm. Even out of context, without knowing anything about the background of the issue, one can observe the author's lack of logic. If you want an example, I have it.

So, a column in the Kommersant newspaper, where an article from the New York Times is discussed, as a kind of lead to the event.

Quote:“Samsung, according to The New York Times, citing internal Google documents, is considering changing the default search engine on its devices to Microsoft Bing, which has attracted attention for its integration with a neural network-based chatbot. Such an opportunity, according to the publication, caused a panic at Google, and employees had to prepare a presentation of their own developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Samsung's maneuver may well be negotiatingtactics. The revenue that Google receives in connection with the pre-installation of its search engine on Samsung phones is estimated at $ 3 billion. I assume that the manufacturer took advantage of the appearance of, in fact, the first serious competitor of Google in the English-language search market, in order to negotiate better conditions.

There is no logic in the note, the money getsGoogle, but Samsung is negotiating for better terms. Moreover, it is argued that for the first time there is a serious competitor to Google search for the English-speaking segment. A bold statement that has no real-life support, Google's dominance of the search market is almost absolute, and all the changes are related to the chatbot vogue, and this vogue is rapidly fading.

The original New York Times article can be found here.

I advise you to always read the original texts, since a “translation” from Russian journalists is usually “I heard a ringing, but I don’t know where it is”. Artistic inventions as a way of life. In the original, we can read that the estimated annual revenue of Google on Samsung devices is about $ 3 billion, a similar contract with Apple brings Google about $ 20 billion a year and there the contract should be renewed in 2023.

Samsung has no negotiating position with Googleregarding search, as the company builds its devices on Android. According to the GMS license, on the first screen of any device (smartphone, tablet) there must be a search widget. It looks like this.

Samsung cannot opt out of this widget, without violating the terms of the license, the company is deprived of the possibility of maneuver in this matter. Google Search is installed separately for the Samsung Internet browser (Google Search is there by default, but there are other search engines).

Formally, Google does not pay for this separately, such a setting is beneficial for Samsung, since it receives a pretty penny from each search. And in the USA there is exactly the same search, just like Google is the first. The reason is that this search makes money, but Bing did not make money. And if Microsoft wanted to buy this place, they could do it. But Microsoft's problem is that the most popular browser on mobile devices is Chrome, and Samsung cannot influence it in any way. And what can be sold? Yes, absolutely nothing. Therefore, it is impossible to talk about replacing Google search on Samsung devices, this is an event that cannot happen in principle. Simple and clear, right?

And in the original New York Times article, tooa lot of confusion and funny, but here one can only complain that this damaged phone requires minimal knowledge, which apparently is not needed in our time.

Let's look back a little to understandwhat is happening between Samsung and Microsoft, how interconnected the companies are. Microsoft realized the failure of Windows Phone almost a decade ago and was looking for a new strategy to bring products to mobile devices. Then there are the first agreements to pre-install Microsoft applications on Samsung mobile devices. In 2015, it was tablets and some devices, then the cooperation expanded, today you get a whole set of applications, plus the cloud from Microsoft has become the default for all Samsung customers.

Let's remember that Windows is working onintegrating Samsung smartphones, transferring data from them, launching applications, and so on. This is a link between two worlds, a strategic cooperation between two giants. But Google is still important, because it controls Android, and Samsung cannot get around it.

Let's now look at what is calledsearch preset from Microsoft. I think you have already guessed how the two companies will get around the restrictions imposed by Google, they will put the Bing application, what is called the “New Bing”. This is the same search in the chatbot version with AI algorithms.

There will be no replacement for Google search, since it's impossible. The threat to Google search is elusive, penetration of the Bing application will not become 100%, it will not reach 10%, judging by the company's other applications on Samsung devices. In a word, the problem is clearly exaggerated, since they want to show us the battle of the giants, but it is de facto absent. Everyone pursues their own goals, journalists create exaggerated sensations, companies work. I liked that there was “panic” inside Google. Curious about what and why? That is, that Microsoft is happy to present the case in this way, there is no doubt. But panic? Google has a strategy to bring new products into a market that has been warmed up by other players. And while they are looking at Microsoft's actions, they are not in a hurry, they are completing their search with AI, which will be plus / minus the same.

So the next time you read aboutsome agreements in the field of search with Samsung, remember this little debriefing, where I tried to explain as simply as possible what is possible and what is not. Especially in light of Google's replacement, which is unrealistic on their own platform! And don't read Soviet newspapers in the morning!
