Chinese coronavirus vaccine proven to be safe

Latest science news gives the world hope forthe imminent end of the pandemic - as the authors of the study write in the medical journal The Lancet, the vaccine that Chinese scientists worked on was safe. Let me remind you that now researchers around the world are working on the manufacture of a vaccine against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causing COVID-19. After 28 days of trials involving 108 healthy volunteers, the results look promising. In addition to demonstrating the safety of the vaccine, it was noted that it generates antibodies and T lymphocytes in volunteers. It is important to understand that these are the first promising results, but there is a very long way to go before mass production of vaccines and the end of the pandemic. We tell what is known about the new vaccine for researchers at Peking University.

Vaccine race

The race for the vaccine that will endcoronavirus crisis, or at least mitigate its consequences, begins to give its first results. Most recently, we told you about successful trials on 45 volunteers of the American vaccine against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, now it became known about the safety and good tolerance of the vaccine of researchers from the Middle Kingdom.

Moreover, the results showed that atin at least eight participants, levels of antibodies capable of neutralizing the infection are similar or higher than those found in the blood of patients who have overcome the disease. All the data for further research by the scientific community, the team of the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology and the Chinese company Cansino Biologics were published in The Lancet.

The results marked the first stagetests of the new vaccine, however, they do not mean that the vaccine will protect everyone from COVID-19. According to Spanish El Pais, project manager Wei Chen warned of the need to make the vaccine available to everyone. Since April, Chinese scientists have been conducting the second phase of trials involving about 500 patients. Stage number III, which will check whether the vaccine is suitable for mass use, starts in the summer - if everything goes well, of course. During the second stage, participants over 60 years old will be included in the study for the first time - the most vulnerable group for COVID-19.

The biggest question today is how to provide all the inhabitants of the planet with a vaccine against coronavirus.

What is the peculiarity of the Chinese vaccine?

New vaccine prepared using livecoronaviruses that cause SARS, but weakened in the laboratory. Since the virus is able to penetrate into human cells without causing disease, it serves as a vehicle for introducing into the patient's cells genetic material that encodes the proteins that form the spikes (the very corona) with which SARS-CoV-2 breaks into cells. These cells then produce a protein that reaches the subject’s immune system and allows him to create antibodies that then recognize these spike-like proteins of the coronavirus and prevent the development of infection.

In fact, the fact that after alla few months after the pandemic was announced, two vaccines that have been successfully tested in humans have been developed in the world, and its speed is amazing. Let me remind you that this is an overwhelming success, especially against the background of the fact that the vaccines against the SARS and MERS coronaviruses, outbreaks of which occurred in 2003 and 2006. accordingly, has not yet been developed.

State-sponsored pharmaceutical giantsThe world has promised to allocate billions of euros to promote various strategies to create an effective vaccine against a pathogen. WHO has now registered 100 potential vaccines that are under development. But the biggest problem now is not the development of a vaccine as such, but the fact that everyone on the planet needs 7.6 billion people. Moreover, how many doses are required is unknown. Will a single vaccination be enough or will it have to be repeated annually? We do not know what the production process of this or these vaccines will be like, some of them are easy to manufacture, and some vice versa.

Let me remind you that for the first time the outbreak of a new coronavirusoccurred at the end of December 2019, when Chinese authorities reported an outbreak of pneumonia of unknown origin in Wuhan, Hubei Province. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on March 11, 2020. At the time of this writing, more than five million people are infected with COVID-19.
