  • Generally, 2-in-1 laptops differattractive design and compactness, but Asus decided to break this stereotype. ASUS ROG Flow X13 is the most powerful 13-inch ultraportable laptop for gaming. What's more, you can connect an external ROG XG Mobile dock with graphics card up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080.

External video cards are not a new technology, wehave already seen compact laptops with Thunderbolt connectors that supported external docking stations. But, they turned out to be very large and had a number of speed limits. Together with the ROG Flow X13, Asus managed to create not only a compact docking station that you can take with you, but also provide it with support for RTX 3080 graphics cards by adding many connectors.

Instead of the traditional Thunderbolt, the manufacturer offers a PCIE 3.0 X8 interface, which does not require installation of drivers or additional software. Just plug in the station and play.

    Design and construction

The Asus ROG Flow X13 is a 13-inch 2-in-1 ultraportable laptop with 180-degree rotatable screen. The device weighs 1.3 kg, so you can take it anywhere.

The design of the laptop is modest - there are no brightdecals or RGB backlights. Additional elements include a barely noticeable textured ROG logo under the arrow keys, a metal plate with the logo and the inscription Republic of Gamers on the bottom cover and the model name under the screen. The lid itself is covered with a nice ribbed pattern of diagonal lines, which gives the laptop a unique look.

It seems that the body is made of plastic, in factThis is a magnesium alloy, so the outer and inner surfaces of ROG Flow X13 collect a lot of prints. However, they are easy to wipe off, so the quality of the materials does not disappoint.

The power button is located on the right side andnot in the usual place above the keyboard, which is a bit inconvenient. This approach can be appreciated by those who often use the tablet mode, although the key practically does not protrude, so it is difficult to find it by touch. The button has a built-in fingerprint scanner, which turns out to be not very reliable in practice. The top side hides a webcam, which was not found in the Asus ROG Zephyrus lineup.

    Connectors and sound

ASUS ROG Flow X13 laptop accommodates full-size USB and HDMI connectors. There is a USB Type-C here, a combo 3.5mm headphone jack and a proprietary XG Mobile dock connector.

The connector has two connectors, the smaller of which (USB-C) supports data transfer and battery charging. Considering the small size of the device, the connection set is impressive.

Two fans are located near the hingesdisplay, one more - on the right side of the case. The speakers are at the bottom, so the sound is a little muffled. To remove the bottom panel of the ROG Flow X13, you need to unscrew 11 screws, after which you will gain access to the internal components. However, you can only replace the M.2 SSD, which is hidden under a small thermal pad.

The RAM is soldered to the board, and eventhe tiny Intel Wi-Fi module turns out to be built-in. As for SSDs, M.2 2230 SSDs are supported, which are not always easy to find.

    Laptop screen

The 13.4-inch display of the Asus ROG Flow X13 has a 16:10 aspect ratio, which results in more vertical space than usual.

The side frames are small, although the top and bottom are morenoticeable. Due to the non-standard aspect ratio when watching a video, black bars remain on the screen. The touchscreen itself is protected by Gorilla Glass.

Display resolution can be 4K (3840 × 2400pixels) with a refresh rate of 60 Hz, or Full HD (1920 × 1200) with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The second option seems preferable because you will have a higher frame rate in games. The stylus, which Asus has added to the package, is also supported. If you draw or take notes frequently, the stylus will prove to be very useful.

When it comes to color gamut, ROGFlow X13 we get: 116% for sRGB, 86% for Adobe RGB and 85% for DCI-P3. There is support for Adaptive-Sync technology and certification from Pantone. Any colors are saturated, as it should be in a panel designed for working with photos or videos.

The maximum brightness reaches 300 nits, but this is more than enough for indoor use. But the 4K resolution seems superfluous to me - Full HD was enough for a 13.4-inch panel.

    Keyboard and touchpad

The Asus ROG Flow X13 keyboard is no different from the ROG Zephyrus G15. The key spacing is great and the travel is surprisingly deep for such a slim body.

Separate buttons are located above the keyboardchange the volume, turn the microphone on and off, start the Armory Crate program. There is no RGB backlighting - instead of it, the usual white backlighting is implemented, which lacks brightness.

ROG Flow X13 touchpad is smaller than many13-inch laptops are due to the large keyboard and extra keys at the top. At first glance, the touchpad appears to be covered with a texture of diagonal lines, although in reality there is a smooth glass panel on top.

The Asus ROG Flow X13 Supernova Edition is on sale with the new AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS processor. In the standard test configuration, the Ryzen 9 5900HS is installed with a core clock speed of up to 4.5 GHz.

In the assembly I am reviewing, there is 16 GB of operationalLPDDR4X memory and 1TB NVMe PCIe Gen 3 SSD. And the discrete graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 has 4 GB of DDR6 video memory. Overheating protection is provided by Thermal Grizzly liquid metal thermal paste and Arc Flow fans with 84 blades of different thicknesses.

Performance tests have shown that ROG FlowThe X13 handles any tough task with ease. Geekbench 5 laptop scores 1413/7455 points, although the GTX 1650 turns out to be a very average graphics card - in 3D Mark Time Spy Extreme it shows a result of 1457 points.

The ROG Flow X13 is also not bad for gaming. In Apex Legends at low settings, I had 85-90 fps. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, the equipment showed 55 fps at low graphics settings, and 30–35 fps at maximum. These are not outstanding figures, but quite good for such a compact laptop. Of course, things change dramatically when you connect the ROG XG Mobile dock with an external RTX 3080 graphics card.

CPU temperature does not exceed 90 ° C,video cards - 72 ° C. The case heats up noticeably only above the central part of the keyboard, when in the places for the palms it is a little warm. According to Asus, the best performance for the ROG Flow X13 is achieved in tent mode, because air flows unhindered through the fans.

    Autonomy ASUS ROG Flow X13

ROG Flow X13 gives you about 6-7 hours of daily tasks on a single charge. For a laptop with 4K resolution, this is a very good indicator.

Compact charger included100W, and the laptop has USB Power Delivery support. You can recharge the battery through other energy sources, even with an external battery. However, all the power of a discrete video card can be used when a standard charger is connected.

Asus ROG Flow X13 is a unique 2-in-1 laptopmany interesting possibilities. Despite its compact design and 13.4-inch screen, this is a true gaming laptop that can be connected to the ROG XG Mobile Dock with dedicated graphics card.

What's more, the ROG Flow X13 is the most powerful 13-inch laptop on the market thanks to the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS octa-core processor. It's amazing how powerful this compact device is.

I was slightly disappointed with the simple design and qualityassembly, although this is taste. ASUS 'only worthy competitor is the Razer Blade 13 Stealth, although the AMD Ryzen chipset offers more advantages. When connected to ROG XG Mobile, the Flow X13 is as good as 17-inch gaming monsters.

    Should I buy?

Of course, you will have to pay for such a devicea lot. Prices for ROG Flow X13 start at 110 thousand rubles, and you will have to pay the same amount for the docking station. However, if you are looking for a compact laptop that you can carry around and play the most demanding games in the evening, there is no better model.
