Apple AirTag Tracker Hacked (Video)


Computer security expert fromGermany, under the nickname stacksmashing, reported on Twitter about the successful hacking of the AirTag microcontroller. According to the specialist, this required “several hours of work” and two broken trackers. As a result of flashing the device, stacksmashing was able to create conditions under which the tracker would be redirected to its own site when the search mode was turned on.

The process of hacking and reprogramming the trackerApple described stacksmashing in several Twitter posts, which also posted a video demonstrating changing a preset URL to an outsider one.

When switching the AirTag tracker to search mode inIn normal operation, the data is sent to the website “found.apple.com”, and the information about the loss is noted on the owner's page. However, as a result of changes in the microcontroller, the tracker sends data to the stacksmashing.net site. Hacking a tracker shows the availability of a device for use in various illegal schemes.


The AirTag hack was reported on May 9th.To date, Apple has not commented on the vulnerability, but it is possible that an appropriate update will be released in the near future to eliminate the problem.
