Announcement. ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is a moderately expensive flagship with interesting cameras

ZTE announced in its native China a couplesmartphones from the Axon 40 series. And called them Axon 40 Pro and Axon 40 Ultra. Smartphones are different, it makes no sense to compare them. Therefore, there will be separate news about each. This news is about that smartphone, which is more powerful, about the Axon 40 Ultra. You can find the news about the younger brother here.

Axon 40 Ultra is curious, first of all, with its cameras. So let's start with them.

The front camera is interesting because ithidden under the screen. This is the third generation of such cameras from ZTE. As usual, serious efforts have been made to mask the camera. How successful was this and how did it affect the quality of the images? Perhaps someday we will find out.

There are three rear cameras (plus a ToF sensor). All three have the same resolution, 64 MP.

  • Main camera with optical stabilization. Sony IMX787 sensor is used. Fresh. Designed for use in flagship devices. Little is known about the actual quality of the images.
  • Wide angle camera. Part-time works as a macro camera. Oddly enough, exactly the same sensor was installed here, i.e. Sony IMX787.
  • Telephoto periscope with optical stabilization. But what kind of sensor is used here is not clear.

Chipset. The fastest available, i.e. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. We are waiting for up to a million points in AnTuTu. Of course, an advanced cooling system is promised.

Memory. Wow. From 8 to 16 GB of operational and from 256 GB to 1 GB of permanent. Support for memory cards is not expected.

Flexible AMOLED screen with a diagonal of 6.8″ (112 cm²) and a resolution of 1116×2480 (400 ppi). Interestingly, the screen is the only thing in which the Axon 40 Ultra is weaker than its younger brother Axon 40 Pro. That one has a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, and here “only” up to 120 Hz.

The battery is standard, 5000 mAh. Charging ultra-fast, 80 watts.

Other. There is Wi-Fi 6E, NFC-module, stereo speakers. Of course, there is no standard audio output.

Not cheap, but not outrageously expensive either. ¥4998 (₽50200, $744), ¥5298 (₽53200, $789), ¥5798 (₽58200, $863) and ¥7298 (₽73200, $1090) for versions 8+256, 12+256, 12+512 and 16 +1024 GB respectively.
