Announcement. Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color - 7.8 ″ color ink, and even with a stylus

Colored electronic ink continues to march across the planet.

Onyx has announced a new device. It's called Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color. As you might guess, it is made on the basis of the Onyx Boox Nova 3 reader released in the fall of 2020. Everything is the same. Only the black and white screen was replaced with a color one. Which automatically means that the beginner is much better adapted to reading all kinds of color textbooks and reference books in pdf format.

Otherwise, there are no changes. Normal smartphone-level hardware, Android, lots of memory, dual sensor, stylus included.

Now a little more about everything.

The screen is ink.E-Ink Kaleido Plus, 7.8 "diagonal. With dual sensor and MOON Light backlight (apparently backlight without color temperature adjustment). The first sensor is capacitive - for fingers, the second - induction - for the stylus (the stylus is included in the standard delivery set).

The resolution is high, 1404 × 1872 (300 ppi).Resolution in “color mode” is lower, only 100 ppi. But ... Everything is complicated there, in fact. I was fortunate enough to examine colored ink under a microscope. The bottom line is that lowering the resolution for a color image does not affect the resolution for black. And if you have a black text on top of the picture, then you will see this black inscription with a normal resolution, not a reduced one. So do not be afraid that you will have to read color pdfs in low resolution.

I did research the ink of the previousgenerations, just Kaleido, not Kaleido Plus. They say that the new ones have become brighter and more beautiful, the screen has become less gray. It would be curious to take a look if the opportunity presents itself.

Iron.Onyx does not officially publish the brands of the chipsets used. But, apparently, the Nova 3 Color uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset (2017, about 150 thousand points in AnTuTu). By the standards of such devices, the hardware is very powerful.

There is a lot of memory. 3 GB of operational, 32 GB of constant. There is no support for memory cards, but it is possible to connect external cards and disks via OTG.

Battery capacity - 3150 mAh. By the standards of readers, the battery is huge.

Wi-Fi dual band. Bluetooth version 5.0. USB Type-C. There is an external speaker and microphone.

The operating system is fresh Android 10.

Price.Over the hill, Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color will cost $ 419.99 (₽31,300). The reader will definitely be brought to Russia, but the price is still unknown. The black and white variant, Onyx Boox Nova 3, is now priced at ₽33,990 ($ 457). I suspect that Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color will be a little more expensive, but hardly much.

An interesting fact. The twin Onyx Boox Nova 3 without a stylus, the Onyx Boox Kon-Tiki 2 reader, is much cheaper. It can now be purchased for just ₽21490 ($ 289). Feel the difference. So I really, really want to see Onyx Boox Kon-Tiki 2 Color on sale in the foreseeable future. Colored ink is a smart thing, but not everyone is ready to pay so much money for a stylus.
