Announcement. Onyx Boox Edison - 7.8 ″ ereader without stylus, but with a very smart case

Onyx has brought another e-book reader to Russia. Meet the Onyx Boox Edison model.

To be honest, I'm already starting to get a little confused about them.models. According to my calculations, Edison becomes the fourth 7.8 ″ reader from Onyx on sale right now. (The fifth reader, Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color with color electronic ink, will be left outside the brackets).

The iron appears to be identical. And the screens are the same. But there are, of course, differences. Let's put them together in a small table for clarity.

Kon-Tiki 2
₽24990 ($ 336)

₽27990 ($ 377)

Nova Air
₽30490 ($ 410)

Nova 3
₽35990 ($ 484)

As you can see, closest to Onyx Boox Edisonthere is an Onyx Boox Nova Air model. Only she has a Wacom stylus in the kit (and, accordingly, the screen has an additional touch layer), while Edison does not have a stylus.

Well, Onyx Boox Kon-Tiki 2. This e-reader is positioned as a less premium device. Thicker, heavier, the complete case is not so interesting. But the battery is more capacious.

The case that comes with the Onyx Boox Edisondeserves a couple of additional words. For it has buttons for paging. (Side Control technology - there are special connectors on the body of the reader, with which the connectors of the cover mate).
The Onyx Boox Kon-Tiki 2 also has a case, but it is normal, without buttons.

About Edison's characteristics.

Screen. Electronic ink E-Ink Carta Plus. The diagonal, as I said, is 7.8 ″. The resolution is 1404 × 1872, which gives the traditional high-level readers 300 dpi. There is a backlight with color temperature control. Protective glass from Asahi. Touch screen. If you use the reader without a cover with its buttons, then all control will go only through the sensor.

Iron.Traditionally, Onyxes do not report what kind of hardware they use in their readers. Judging by indirect indications (the frequency of the processor cores is 1.8 GHz and the tenth Android) in the case of Edison, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset is used. If this is true, then here we have the penultimate generation of the Onyx software and hardware platform. Some of the latest devices use the slightly more powerful and modern Qualcomm Snapdragon 662.

There is a lot of memory, by the standards of readers.3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. There is no support for memory cards, but with this amount of permanent memory, it is not really needed. Nevertheless, the device is mainly designed for reading.

However, not a single reading. The Onyx Boox Edison has speakers, two of them (on the bottom edge). Plus, you can connect speakers or headphones via Bluetooth. So it is quite possible to listen to both music and audiobooks. If for some reason you do not want to listen to them from your smartphone.

The battery is rather modest, only 2000 mAh. But e-ink readers are specific devices. They don't need a lot of electricity.

What else. Wi-Fi dual band. USB modern, Type-C. As usual, it is possible to install third-party applications.

Separately note the dimensions and weight of the device. Only 235 grams and 6.3 mm thick. But, the truth is, this is without a cover. With a cover, it will be heavier and thicker.

Edison's page has already appeared in the Palmstore.
Current price is ₽27,990 ($ 377). But the official announcement of the device has not yet been made. And, as practice shows, the price may change slightly by the time of the announcement.
